Reading the description and reviews and pictures, I expected sth completely different. I arrived there and the whole place felt very shady and strange. The care taker barely said a word and it seemed more like I was disturbing the day. The dorms were attached to each other which decreased privacy. There was one toilet and one shower in the whole property - way way too little for the amount of beds. Luckily there was almost nobody though. The noise of the van was unimaginable and the night full of heat, noise, and tons of mosquitoes. The whole place seemed very run down.
Gokarna is such a beautiful change from the beaches of Goa in the north. The hostel was budget friendly, was in a quiet spot but organised social events such as a fire and music. The owner also spins some of the best tunes...a much needed break from hectic psytrance. Most definitely check it out.
Stayed there for a month. Dip is the best host and a very good cook. From the first day, he treated me like family. Events like quiz, movies, bonfire, hikes etc. were fun. Meeting people from all over the world was such a thrilling experience. The beaches are within walking distance. A calm and peaceful location.
Sturmfrei Hostel is located on a small hilltop away from the hustle of the market area. Said that the 1km walk from the main bus stand is rather pleasing to the eye. The view right in front of the hostel is calming. Another benefit of the location is that it's in the middle of Gokarna so getting out and beach hunting is convenient. Dip is a great host and he makes sure your stay there is comfortable. The beds and restrooms are clean and well maintained. The vibe of the place is cool especially if you are backpacking on a budget. Meeting and interacting with people of different cultures and different countries all while sipping coffee and enjoying the calm ambiance. Personally, this place is as good as a hostel can get.
