We were so thankful to have gone away this year and so much more grateful that we stayed where we did. Such a fantastic location, such a cosy place to stay and with such great hosts. We couldn't recommend highly enough! A brilliant location less than an hour from Lucca with charming views and set in a quiet, pretty and peaceful location and also close to the charming town of Bagni di Lucca. We arrived late on our first day and Roy had cooked us a fantastic meal which was a great start to our stay. The property is beautiful, very clean, comfortable, cosy and situated in a peaceful and friendly hamlet on the hilltops with lovely views and very friendly residents within the village. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and can't thank Shirley and Roy enough for their kindness and attentiveness throughout our stay - nothing was ever too much. Roys cooking was the icing on the cake - great food and top chef! A great place to stay and we will always come back!!…
We had a fantastic time at Casa Marchi! Roy and Shirley are nice warm people who make you feel at home. Great conversations and lots of good recommendations in the area! The breakfast was outstanding! Beautifully prepared with fresh ingredients, it couldn't be better. We absolutely recommend this B&B!!
I was only there for 4 days, and it was just what I wanted? Quite, great food, and Roy and Shirley were the greatest host's. If you like a nice walk in the hills? This is for you! I just can't put it into words? I've came back feeling great!
Casa Marchi is your reward for braving the winding mountain road up from Bagni Di Lucca to the small hamlet of Gombereto. In truth once you’re accustomed to driving in Italy it doesn’t seem daring at all, but after a long day’s travel we were very happy to reach our destination. Roy and Shirley soon put us at ease, only partly assisted by wine and grappa. We had booked a meal for our first night and were very glad we did. Roy cooks superbly with fresh local ingredients and his tiramisu is unsurpassed. The rooms are comfortable and clean, very nicely set out and we had beautiful views over the valley. Roy and Shirley can offer many helpful suggestions for your planned excursions or ideas for getting the most out of the surrounding area. The train station is a short drive away and there are plenty of interesting local sights to visit, so Gombereto is both a peaceful retreat and a great base. Don’t forget to take the time to check out the little village square. Roy and Shirley are great company. We could easily chat into the night and we felt more like part of the family than tourists by the end of our stay. They were wonderful to my mother-in-law, who has compared every cup of coffee since unfavourably with Roy’s perfect brew. They are two of Tuscany’s hidden gems!…
Not far from Lucca is the attractive small town of Bagni di Lucca. From here take a winding road up into the forested hills. Higher and higher until you come to the tiny medieval picturesque village of Gombereto. Through the stone arch into the village you’ll find Casa Marchi, the lovely home of Roy and Shirley. It is here where I along with my daughter, son in law and granddaughter were to stay. We were met by our friendly hosts and welcomed into their tastefully decorated and furnished home. Shirley is an accomplished artist, Casa Marchi’s walls are testament to this. She is also a trained masseuse, should you be in need of a massage! Roy is a classically trained chef, and as we were to discover his skills produced wonderfully delicious meals. After a much welcome cup of tea on the terrace Shirley showed us to our bedrooms. All our rooms were were stylishly presented and en-suite. Comfortable and cozy beds. So peaceful and quiet. A perfect retreat at the end of a busy day. Casa Marchi was a true find. We visited Florence, Pisa and Lucca whilst in Tuscany. All are within easy reach for a days exploring from Casa Marchi. During our too short stay we ate a plentiful breakfast which set us up for the day ahead. We also opted for evening meals as Roys food was so wholesome and delicious. All in all a most wonderful stay with two lovely people. Many, many thanks, Roy and Shirley.…
Had a 3 night family stay at Casa Marchi. What a find. Stunning scenery and views. Accommodation is stylish and welcoming. The stay was made extra special by the hosts Roy & Shirley, nothing is too much trouble and they are very knowledgeable about the local area. Access to walking, hiking, biking and exploring local villages. Good size rooms all with en suites and spotlessly clean. Excellent food made fresh by Roy (trained chef) and treatments available by Shirley (trained therapist). Good rail links from Bagni di Lucca to Lucca, Pisa, Florence and beyond. Our first trip to Italy was fantastic, we didn’t want to come home. Hoping to visit again soon.
My wife and I have been lucky enough to spend a week at Casa Marchi with Shirley & Roy. They are the most warm, friendly, welcoming hosts we have had the pleasure to meet. We were recommended to the B&B by a local lady after moving from our original booked house owing to the house not suitable for us. We turned up at Roy and Shirley's unannounced,Shirley dropped everything and put the kettle on for tea and biscuits. Typical of their hospitality! Our room was lovely with fantastic views, warm and lovely hot shower. Roy is a fantastic chef having previously worked in the top hotels. Breakfast was a different feast every morning. Always something hot choice with additional cheeses, toast , fruit, cereal etc . Too much to mention! Plus Roy's coffee is fantastic! We celebrated our wedding anniversary at Casa Marchi,Roy cooked us the most memorable meal. Top quality restaurant quality but better. We had fizz , wine, liqueur and coffee. We will always remember this anniversary.Shirley is such a talented lady making amazing mosaics. Shirley could sell her wonderful creations in an instant! Brilliant. We had great chats with them both over breakfast and drinks on their lovely terrace. We didn't want to go out as never bored of their stories and we discussed everything . I class them as friends as we left sadly. Both up at the crack of dawn to see us home. I could go on by no words could fully describe how great they both are as hosts. …
Just returned from a 2 night stay while visiting friends in the area. Roy & Shirley made us feel very welcome the moment we arrived. Casa Marchi is beautiful furnished, the rooms are spacious and clean with lovely en-suites. Breakfast was delicious and Roy cooked the best frittata I have ever had, wish we were staying longer so I could have enjoyed an evening meal as from the reviews I think I missed out. We really enjoyed just sitting at breakfast and late in the evening chatting to both Roy & Shirley and learning all about the area we felt like we were amongst friends we had known for years. Thank you both for a wonderful stay in Casa Marchi just perfect.
We have just returned from a fantastic week with Roy & Shirley. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome in their beautiful home and instantly offered drinks and nibbles which after along day of traveling was most welcome. Roy and Shirley are fantastic hosts who went above and beyond and it soon felt as if we were staying with friends, their knowledge and advice was invaluable to us and we can't thank them enough for that. Roy is an amazing chef who always set us up for the day with hearty breakfast and as an optional extra prepared evening meals for us which were always of the highest gourmet quality with deserts prepared by both which were simply to die for. The accommodation is outstanding and has been lovingly restored with cosy en suite rooms that have been tastefully decorated throughout and feature some of Shirley's own creative artwork and mosaics. We have never slept better and loved waking up to the stunning views across the mountains. Roy and Shirley we can't thank you enough and look forward to seeing you again very soon.…
My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful break with Shirley and Roy, in their beautiful home in Gombereto, Bagni Di Lucca. From first arriving we were made to feel very special, their home has all amenities and is stunning. Shirley and Roy are the perfect hosts, available when required for help and guidance, but not too much in your face. They know the area very well and can recommend lots of special places to visit. Roy ( as I nicknamed him master-chef) was a fantastic chef and host, his food was exceptional in fact a gastronomic feast! We would go out for the day after a good hearty breakfast and on our return, more often than not weather permitting we would have drinks on the patio with lively conversation with Shirley and Roy. After this we would have a relaxing shower ready for dinner which would never be disappointing always super delicious! Roy and Shirley make you so welcome , we thoroughly recommend their accommodation. Please go and check out for yourselves you will not be disappointed. We are looking forward to returning.. This was a last minute booking and oh what a find. We understand in the warmer months there are two excellent swimming pools nearby.. Oh one thing I nearly forgot was the wonderful facial and Bowan technique I had from Shirley, I felt so chilled and relaxed afterwards. Thank you Shirley and Roy PS. Your mosaics Shirley are amazing, what patience you have!…
