Very average property near Durgapur Barrage. An erstwhile Govt property and now has been leased to a private operator. River Damodar is 3-4 minutes walk from this property. Room and bathroom in the 1st floor are ok but are little shabby and old fashioned. The front corridor looks unassuming, if not ugly. They will give you 2 very small medimix soap and 2 shampoo pouch as "bathroom toiletries". What surprised us is the poor and almost worn out condition of the bath-towels. It seems they don't have sufficient staffs to manage the show. Intercom was not functional. We had to call a particular staff (on his mobile) for small issues. But the staffs tried there best to meet our expectation but without that professional touch. May be they need some basic training to look after their guests. The locality doesn't offer any scenic beauty excepting a few trees.

The service was very good, and our stay was so relaxing. The price I paid was absolutely worth it.I can bring my children and small pets. Providing accommodation and adequate spaces for kids and small animals will help you win over parents and pet owners.

From the very minute, we started interacting with the staff it was clear that they treat you like personal guests. Right from giving you direction, to the warm reception, to attending to every little need that you may have during your stay - the staff here really shines. The rooms, restaurant, balconies, and gardens, are clean and adequately equipped. The food is always warm and made fresh in the kitchen. The play area, the courtyard - practically everything shows the touch of tender love and care. The resort is a short walk from the Damodar river and there are many day-trips around here. Again the staff members will plan your trip for you with a smile. Whether you travel solo, or with a large family - you will want to come back to The Damodar Retreat again and again.

Nice place to relax, recharge. It is close to Damodar river. The place is being developed and it has a huge lawn and garden. Food is great, especially Bengali cuisine. Rooms are very spacious. A bit dated but the environment makes up for the tlc need . Riju was amazing - always ready to serve with a smile. Souvik generously spent time with us to help us feel comfortable and well looked after . Definitely recommend this place for a weekend getaway.

Everything was excellent and the staff took very good care of us. Soubik was there with us throughout and we were very touched by his attention to details and genuine warmth and hospitality. Riju is an excellent cook and made sure all our meals were super delicious yet light and homely. Strongly recommend you visit this place with family...they take excellent care of the elderly.

We visited Damodar Retreat during June 2022. You need a 4 hour smooth drive by a Tempo including a lazy tea break to reach the venue. The ambiance was good, precisely the big green lawn and the covered sitout arena. I am writing this review because of the food - what the management supplied. We were a 18 people group and enjoyed the beautifully presented dishes. Veg or Nonveg – all were tasty (excluding the chinese soup). Later informed about the absence of chinese cook during our visit. All food supplied hot. Staffs & the management were cooperative. Nice people. We got spacious rooms. (AC was faulty in one room out of 9 rooms). River is not visible from the hotel but it is a mere 3 minutes’ walk to reach the water. Enjoyed the evening arati on Damodar with a 15 – 20 min boating. Overall nice property. Perfect for a 2-3 days vacation. We have also visited the historic places Garhjangal, The Temple, Raktanala, Maharshi Medhashram on second day.

Thank you so much for your kind and detailed review. We regret the inconveniences caused due to the absence of the Chinese cook during your stay and the AC which ran into some technical issues - some accidents are beyond our control in spite of the maintenance carried out throughout the year. We have rectified both the issues raised by you and will be glad to have you back in our property some time in the future. Warm regards from team TDR.

Once known as the sorrow of Bengal, Damodar is one of the few rivers that are considered masculine in Bengal. Though not quite sure this perhaps is due to the fact that they donot have any prominent distributaries emerging out of them. Learning from the Tennessee valley, a massive river training project was undertaken to harness the river & utilise its powers productively. In the process a number of dams & barrages were built on it. For the curious, the difference between the first & the second is while the former is mainly for storage the latter has a number of gates instead of a massive concrete structure to moderate the flow of water. Enough of background info now let’s get on with the property. There is a problem of reincarnation, more things change more they remain the same. What was once the Durgapur Tourist lodge was changed to Riviera & has now become the Damodar Retreat. It is currently managed by a private operator, one of the leading Tea retailers in Kolkata, who have brought in some minimal touches, while keeping the essential character unchanged. The rooms are spacious with all modcoms at your disposal. We visited them in Feb’22, so keeping in mind that things particularly hotels were coming out after a long pandemic induced hiatus, the upkeep is limping back to life. Before I point our the gaps, let me put out an honest one liner- this is a good value property if you keep your expectations realistic. The view from the room has the lazy river right in front of you that enthralls you with its limpid charms all through the day & night. The ample lawn & generous room size with their own sit out verandahs are charming. They have an extensive tea menu drawing from their present owners. Another great plus is the freshness of the food, specially the vegetables that were literally plucked less than 2-3 hrs from their own patch. Another insider tip would be not to miss the evening “arati” or salutations to the river every evening at the ghat closeby. If you are there a little early try out a short boat ride on a single oarsman pushes the dinghy taking you around the watered part of the barrage for a nice ride, that is better close to sunset. The negatives would be food beyond the familiar Bengali cuisine. We got so impressed by the excellent fare of posto (poppy-seed) & lovely insecticide free garden greens that we got swayed by the cook’s confidence that he was equally adept with Chinese. Little did we know that we were going in for Tianmenn square (disclaimer my history knowledge doesnot extend to find a Chinese equivalent of Waterloo 😉). It was a complete fiasco to say the least. Despite this the overall experience would be a 7.5 out of 10. Hope it would see better upkeep, as people start travelling again. Someone had an issue for it being on the way to the burning ghat but during our stay that did not pose any inconvenience & you may not notice its existence unless Google pops it up. Another useful caveat would be to ditch following the maps once you have taken the eft from Durgapur Power/GE at present & ask the locals, as Google then messes it up. Enjoy your stay as quietly flows Damodar…..

Thank you Sir, for your in depth review and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused with respect to the Chinese cuisine. The same group which operated "The Riviera" is currently operating "The Damodar Retreat". The tea room has been set up in collaboration with "Zyanna" to serve our customers a good range of Darjeeling Tea. We look forward to your staying with us again and hope to make amends with respect to the issues tastefully highlighted by you. It was indeed a pleasure reading your review. Thanks and regards from team TDR !

The Damodar Retreat had been on our wish list since a couple of years now and finally we decided to visit the place last month. The booking process was very smooth. We called the hotel and paid 50% in advance. There is no complimentary breakfast, but the food cost is reasonable. There is usually a rush at this place during weekends. Driver accommodation is also available. The property is spread across a huge area. There are around 12-13 double rooms in the two-storeyed main building and some 4- bedded rooms in the annex building. There is an in-house restaurant and an open air restaurant in the lawn. The lawn is huge and well maintained. In winters, we saw a variety of roses in the hotel garden. Organic farming is carried out and we could see such fresh vegetables in the garden. The swimming pool is not functional now but there are plans of opening it up soon. The rooms are huge, with a big bathroom and attached balcony. There is no electric kettle in the rooms but the staff is very helpful and provided us with hot water whenever asked for. Do not forget to try the variety of tea available in the hotel. All in all - a very good stay and we wish to visit again.

Definitely a beautiful destination resort for a weekend trip. I stayed here for 2 nights with my family. Excellent location and most importantly the hospitality from each and everyone in the resort. The rooms are very spacious. Excellent food and very cooperative staff. I am thankful to Mr. Prasanta the kitchen manager for arranging separate food for my 2 years daughter. Every staff is very well behaved and professionally trained. The owner Mr. Sougata Mukherjee is very careful about the guest's comfort during the stay. I will definitely plan to visit again and stay in The Damodar Retreat.
