Once known as the sorrow of Bengal, Damodar is one of the few rivers that are considered masculine in Bengal. Though not quite sure this perhaps is due to the fact that they donot have any prominent distributaries emerging out of them. Learning from the Tennessee valley, a massive river training project was undertaken to harness the river & utilise its powers productively. In the process a number of dams & barrages were built on it. For the curious, the difference between the first & the second is while the former is mainly for storage the latter has a number of gates instead of a massive concrete structure to moderate the flow of water. Enough of background info now let’s get on with the property. There is a problem of reincarnation, more things change more they remain the same. What was once the Durgapur Tourist lodge was changed to Riviera & has now become the Damodar Retreat. It is currently managed by a private operator, one of the leading Tea retailers in Kolkata, who have brought in some minimal touches, while keeping the essential character unchanged. The rooms are spacious with all modcoms at your disposal. We visited them in Feb’22, so keeping in mind that things particularly hotels were coming out after a long pandemic induced hiatus, the upkeep is limping back to life. Before I point our the gaps, let me put out an honest one liner- this is a good value property if you keep your expectations realistic. The view from the room has the lazy river right in front of you that enthralls you with its limpid charms all through the day & night. The ample lawn & generous room size with their own sit out verandahs are charming. They have an extensive tea menu drawing from their present owners. Another great plus is the freshness of the food, specially the vegetables that were literally plucked less than 2-3 hrs from their own patch. Another insider tip would be not to miss the evening “arati” or salutations to the river every evening at the ghat closeby. If you are there a little early try out a short boat ride on a single oarsman pushes the dinghy taking you around the watered part of the barrage for a nice ride, that is better close to sunset. The negatives would be food beyond the familiar Bengali cuisine. We got so impressed by the excellent fare of posto (poppy-seed) & lovely insecticide free garden greens that we got swayed by the cook’s confidence that he was equally adept with Chinese. Little did we know that we were going in for Tianmenn square (disclaimer my history knowledge doesnot extend to find a Chinese equivalent of Waterloo 😉). It was a complete fiasco to say the least. Despite this the overall experience would be a 7.5 out of 10. Hope it would see better upkeep, as people start travelling again. Someone had an issue for it being on the way to the burning ghat but during our stay that did not pose any inconvenience & you may not notice its existence unless Google pops it up. Another useful caveat would be to ditch following the maps once you have taken the eft from Durgapur Power/GE at present & ask the locals, as Google then messes it up. Enjoy your stay as quietly flows Damodar…..

Thank you Sir, for your in depth review and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused with respect to the Chinese cuisine. The same group which operated "The Riviera" is currently operating "The Damodar Retreat". The tea room has been set up in collaboration with "Zyanna" to serve our customers a good range of Darjeeling Tea. We look forward to your staying with us again and hope to make amends with respect to the issues tastefully highlighted by you. It was indeed a pleasure reading your review. Thanks and regards from team TDR !

The Damodar Retreat had been on our wish list since a couple of years now and finally we decided to visit the place last month. The booking process was very smooth. We called the hotel and paid 50% in advance. There is no complimentary breakfast, but the food cost is reasonable. There is usually a rush at this place during weekends. Driver accommodation is also available. The property is spread across a huge area. There are around 12-13 double rooms in the two-storeyed main building and some 4- bedded rooms in the annex building. There is an in-house restaurant and an open air restaurant in the lawn. The lawn is huge and well maintained. In winters, we saw a variety of roses in the hotel garden. Organic farming is carried out and we could see such fresh vegetables in the garden. The swimming pool is not functional now but there are plans of opening it up soon. The rooms are huge, with a big bathroom and attached balcony. There is no electric kettle in the rooms but the staff is very helpful and provided us with hot water whenever asked for. Do not forget to try the variety of tea available in the hotel. All in all - a very good stay and we wish to visit again.

Definitely a beautiful destination resort for a weekend trip. I stayed here for 2 nights with my family. Excellent location and most importantly the hospitality from each and everyone in the resort. The rooms are very spacious. Excellent food and very cooperative staff. I am thankful to Mr. Prasanta the kitchen manager for arranging separate food for my 2 years daughter. Every staff is very well behaved and professionally trained. The owner Mr. Sougata Mukherjee is very careful about the guest's comfort during the stay. I will definitely plan to visit again and stay in The Damodar Retreat.

An extremely well curated mid-range Resort at the bank of Damodar, at a reasonable distance from Durgapur bustle.... a 3 hrs drive along the sublime NH19 takes you to this quietude... all Rooms are spacious, with balconies while the assured highlights are the absolute king-sized washrooms... the Resort is both kid/pet-friendly with sweeping open spaces making it the right kind of mix for a family jaunt... the Resort which was one of the first sites of WBTDC in 1960s, is now in it's refurbished avatar....

Though a little off the road the Basic facilities of a homely resort are there (though pricey by comparison with Durgapur hotels). You need your own transport for anything. We went during the puja hols so it wasn't crowded and we had plenty of space. The rooms are reasonably large but the bathrooms are humongous! Well stocked with toiletries too. Very comfortable beds, if you don't turn in your sleep. Air-conditioning is great, gets pretty cold but the remotes work! The best part is the proactive service. The guys are on the ball and serve promptly. The managers come to the dining hall to check on quality for every meal. The Pujo menu was a trifle limited with just one chicken dish on it (one dry one gravy). The preparation was excellent, though. There was a prawn dish which my wife described as "a disaster". The downside is the distance from the town where everything happens, so it's great if you just want to relax. The swimming pool was a deep green so we didn't go there! All in all it was okay considering the rest of the state is celebrating a major festival we still had pretty decent service.

Dear Sir, We have taken serious note of your comments and apologise for the areas which were not up to your expectations. We had some issues with the pool filtration pump and it couldn't be repaired as the service centres were closed for the festive period. Having restarted recently, we are working on restoring / improving many areas and your constructive feedback will help us to do better. Looking forward to serve you again and assuring you our best services. Thanks and regards from the TDR team !

'The Damodar Retreat' is the refurbished avatar of erstwhile 'Riviera' and it has started welcoming guests already. So a weekend trip to the property was drawn up and it was worth the visit in every sense. TDR as its fondly called now boasts now of vast expanse of greenery all around the rooms. The first impression that one has as the gates open up is that this resort is nestled in the greens!! The landscaped gardens and the 'home grown veggies' plot provide that much needed 'soothing view'. Having driven nonstop for 3 hours, we were pretty much hungry and the polite staff at TDR promptly advised us to check in for a tasty dinner. I am generally apprehensive about eating mutton outside my home turf but the staff's assurance at TDR was proven hands-down when the succulent meat dishes arrived piping hot and matched our expectations! The rooms are big and the washrooms even bigger. Infact there's enough space inside the washroom to add a bed or two. Probably because this is a heritage property (it goes back as early as the 60s and is WBTDC's first resort in Bengal) that the rooms and the washrooms are so generous in their dimensions. The food quality and service is quite good and we hope to taste those dishes which we missed out in this visit. Its only a 2 hour drive from Mukutmanipur and a 1 hour drive to Bankura-Bishnupur and thats the reason we saw cars full of holiday goers drop by for a quick rest and food. For the urbanised Kolkatans and especially for the children who crave for open spaces, this resort provides ample oppurtunity to indulge in outdoor activities. The swimming pool is also functional so thats another sweet spot for the traveller. My best part about the stay at TDR was waking up to the call of birds and nothing else, not a single sound of any machine or engine!! That was priceless.... Will I come back again? For sure and next time I will bring my kid and their friends and family too...they will love feeding the rabbits and seeing how vegetables are grown. TDR to me was an eclectic mix of modern day resort set amidst rural environment!!
