I first read about Gowri Niwas in a Conde Nast Traveller issue dated November 2019 titled "12 Best Homestays in Coorg". It looked like just the place that my family and I would want to stay in. We had to wait for 3 years before we could actually stay here. In those 3 years I kept looking at the pictures of the property and reading the reviews and wondering if it would live up to the expectations I had built up in those 3 years. Well, needless to say, it not just lived up to my expectations, but surpassed them. Gowri Niwas is a heritage cottage, set in a beautiful garden, looked after lovingly by a young couple Muthu and her husband Bopanna. Since we were a family of 4 we took both the rooms in the cottage, so we had the whole cottage, with the common seating area outside which looks on to the garden, all to ourselves. The rooms are traditional and have a heritage touch with its handmade floor tiles, its antique door, its tiled roof, tastefully done up and well fitted with all the mod cons like TV, Hot water kettle , High speed Wi Fi, hot water for bathing, etc. The rooms are clean, well-kept and we had the most comfortable beds, pillows, linen. The well laid out garden surrounding the property is beautiful and one can just spend time lazing around, sitting on the bench in the garden and just being at peace doing nothing, a luxury for us Mumbaikars. The property is situated in the heart of Madikeri, yet once you step into Gowri Niwas, you are far from the hustle and bustle of the town and are cocooned in your own private space with the beautiful garden and open area surrounding you. If you want to step out, the bonus is that Gowri Niwas is walking distance to a lot of tourist places like Raja's Seat, Madikeri Fort and Museum, Omkareshwar Temple, General Thimayya Museum (Sunnyside). Since my family and I love walking, we walked to all these places taking in the sights and sounds of the town as we explored on foot. If you don't have your own vehicle to explore the other sightseeing places like Abbi falls, Bylakuppe, etc, no problem. Just inform Muthu in advance and she will arrange a vehicle for sightseeing at a very good rate. The room rate includes breakfast and the homestay provides a delicious substantial breakfast. Besides a continental breakfast of milk and cornflakes, toast and eggs to order, there was a Coorgi breakfast provided every morning. For us the icing was that we got a different Coorgi breakfast for all the 5 mornings that we were there: delicious Nulu puttu (rice noodles shaped like idlis) with Veg stew, dosas with Potato Palya , Kunni Puttu with channas, Akki rotis served with veg curry, we were spoilt for choice . If all this does tempt you to stay, there's Rowdy, their cute lovable pet dog. His bark might scare you as you enter the property, but soon enough he'll be friends with you, especially if you share your tea time biscuits with him. The five nights that we were at Gowri Niwas just flew and on the morning that we had to leave, we experienced conflicting emotions, happiness that we got to stay at this lovely property, being hosted by this lovely young couple, playing with Rowdy, eating scrumptious breakfasts, and then sadness that we were leaving all this to go back to city life. The only downside that we experienced was that since the homestay provides only breakfast and not lunch or dinner, we had to go out for our meals. We didn’t mind having lunch out as we were always on the move during the day, but to go out at night for dinner was a little inconvenient for us, though there are several restaurants within walking distance. Other than that, we had a perfect holiday. Thank you Muthu and Bopanna for being the perfect hosts and making our first ever home stay so memorable.…
We were on transit to Madikeri and found this beautiful, cosy, and aesthetically designed property tucked away in the hustle of the town. The icing on the cake are Mrs. and Mr. Bopanna, who played the perfect hosts even on last-minute notice. Our takeaway is that we met one of the warmest people with a keen eye for detail. Their idea of hospitality has made us friends for life.
it was a fantastic experience staying at Gowri Nivas, Muthu Madam nd Bopanna Ji were very helpful and stand as perfect people. The Breakfast served by them is tasty and blends with the local taste. Rowdy, The Dog is another happiness at that place. The place is awesome and worth remembering always.
Authentic cottage stay with no frills. The hospitality shown by hosts is commendable. Rooms were neat, a little bit rustic but authentic. The hosts live in the main cottage while the one they rent is detached and has a little path leading to it. The path is between a well maintained garden with beautiful flowers. There is a timing for hot water but hosts Muthu and Bopanna are very accommodating. There is a black dog who may appear intimidating at first but is a very nice and docile one, name was Rowdy I think. No issues with parking and it’s very close to Hotel Le Coorg. You can check with hosts about food or can order through Swiggy. Our stay included a complimentary breakfast which included cornflakes, milk, honey, eggs(requested for both boiled and omelette and hosts readily obliged), bread toast, butter, idli and sambhar. Sambhar was an absolute delight and really delicious. It was the best one we tried during our trip of Mysore and Coorg. You know you have caring hosts when they are waiting at door with plates and spoons when your Swiggy delivered order arrives. Thank you Muthu.…
Even in the midst of the city, Gowri Nivas gives a feeling of being a secluded and comfortable space. The staff and the host are both friendly and the ambience of the place is very peaceful. Had a wonderful stay...
So, this was my second trip to Coorg and me and my friends decided to spend our 4 days break from our hectic schedule at Gowri Nivas hosted by Bopanna and his family. In a nutshell, it was the perfect place to spend our long weekend. We were received by Bops (Bopanna) who was very helpful in providing us with directions from the start and once we reached, we were greeted by the lovely black Labrador the family owns - Rowdy (He is one of the most docile and silent dogs we had come across). Bopanna and his mother were there to greet us and show us the cottage which is in the same property but offset from the main house in the middle of a plush, green garden with adequate space and privacy. As for the rooms and space, it had the old charm and grace of vintage houses with latest amenities which was really comfortable. The housekeeping staff were very prompt in responding to our requirements and Bops took the time out from his busy schedule to come and check up on us, and was very helpful in giving us recommendations on where to go, which places to see and where to get good coorgi food from. Another reason for loving the place was, though it is a very silent and independent place, nestled in the garden, it is still a stone throws away from the main market and other prime sightseeing places, so location wise also, it was a good choice. It was a really wonderful experience and I think the next trip too will definitely love to spend at Bop's and Muthu's Homestay - Gowri Nivas.…
Our stay and experience at Gowri Nivas was nothing short of exemplary! Muthu and Bopanna were excellent hosts and we had a great time interacting with them and spending time at the homestay. Bopanna was gracious enough to let us take a walk through their plantation, about an hour's drive from the homestay. The property is very well-maintained with beautiful architecture that allows you to soak in the fresh cool air while you wake up to the chirping of birds every morning. This place is ideal if you want a quick getaway from your city life. We are sure we will visit Gowri Nivas very soon again.
We have been to Coorg many times but it is the stay that makes it extra special. This time we stayed at Gowri Nivas hosted by Bopanna and Muthu who ensured our stay was memorable. It is a lush green and vibrant homestay even though it is in the heart of Madikeri. Even though we did not do any sight seeing we enjoyed a relaxed stay at Gowri Nivas. The rooms are comfortable and tastefully designed, the breakfast was simple, delicious homely food. We enjoyed talking with Bopanna, his mother, and Muthu who made us feel at home. They have an adorable son Ahaan and playful dog called Rowdy, who was a wonderful addition to the stay! Bopanna was also kind enough to invite us to their estate which was about an hour from the homestay in Kakkabe. The estate is beautiful and has a lovely stream running through it. It was a wonderful walk through the plantation. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Gowri Nivas!…
We recently spent a weekend at Gowri Nivas. It was one of the best homestays ever. The entire family which included Muthu, Bop, Ahaan and Rowdy (the doggy) were amazing to say the least. The place is extremely beautiful and well kept. The food was so good that we could hardly stop eating. Our 7 year old son and their son became such good pals in a few hours that he did not want to leave the place at all. Rowdy is a super sweet and fun doggy. We look forward to visiting the place again :-)
Our stay at Gowri Nivas was excellent. Extremely warm and great hosts. Delicious breakfast with an amazing peaceful view. A big thank you to the whole family (including rowdy) for giving us a memorable time! Surely gonna visit again!
