Just returned for a week at Athina Palace. Firstly, IT IS NOT 5 STAR. Do not book if you want 5 star experience. The hotel is generally filthy. The pool toilets are unusable. The food areas and pool areas are disgusting. The food is basic and repetitive and there is very little for kids. The pasta is very popular and tasty but it goes very quickly. They need to have a separate pasta station as well as pancake station at breakfast because you have to wait for ages. Also, something that really annoyed me at lunch was that the grill and pasta is together. They are the most popular choices so it causes queuing and business instead of a relaxing setting which you would expect for an apparent 5 star. Another terrible feature is you can only get cold water at dinner. During the day water is again left from old tatty dispensers and the water is warm!!!! The wine and beer is absolutely awful. Location and setting is lovely but it let down so badly by the standard of the hotel and food. It needs an massive update and more staff. There is also absolutely no entertainment apart from 3 tunes played for the mini disco so the kids are bored after and then random entertainment but most evenings absolutely nothing going on. Unfortunately a very disappointing stay. I wouldn’t recommend and I won’t be returning.

It states a 5* resort…. IT IS NOT…. Booked a sea view room for family of 4 (1 child 19 & 1 child 11). When we arrived it must be said the service from the reception staff was very good….. We were then taken to our room by ‘Lewis Hamilton’ in a battered old Mercedes van with door held open with string (Not very 5*😂)… ‘Hamilton’ comes in for a pit stop at what we assume is our room… As we walk down the dark and dingy corridor to our room the only thing missing was a couple of syringes & a vagrant asleep in a pool of his own vomit & pee… ‘Hamilton’ opens the room by use of an electric door lock that is hanging on for dear life of as much security as a wet paper towel…. Immediately ’Hamilton’ has entered does his hand shoot out faster than a lizards tongue catching flies in anticipation of his tip (something you need to get used to if you stay here. It’s all inclusive apart from the £3million you’ll need for tips. They almost expect tips for saying good morning)… So, to the room…. Where to begin? Stains of an unknown nature on the wall. Paper headboard (yep, you read that right, paper headboard) ripped displaying the bare nakedness of the lighting & power to the room….. Air-Con, how to best describe it? Imagine an asthmatic donkey with halitosis stood blowing the heat from a thousand suns in to the room & you can begin to understand…. Toilet seat that was so hungry if you posses gentleman’s pieces you were likely to get them sliced off should you need to take a ‘sit down lavatory experience’. The moment you place any weight on to said seat it launch itself sideways with such ferocity your gentleman’s veg have the potential to swing in to the danger zone😳 To the beds… To be fair our bed was ok. The kids bed however can only be described as something akin to what Mary & Joseph slept on in the manger. The only difference being Mary & Joseph’s would have been more comfortable… The room in general, well I can’t actually think of any witty anecdotes to describe it.. It was just massively sub par for a resort claiming to be 5*… I would rank this in UK terms as maybe a 3*… Off to reception we went…. 20 mins of ‘discussion’ with resort manager later & here we were moved to a 2 storey actual 4 person room… It’s amazing what the power of the threat of social media can do….

Let's start with the big one...this claims to be 5* and is officially rated that according to the certificate in the lobby but based on UK ratings this would be a 2* or 3* at a push. There is nothing much wrong with it that a bit of tlc couldn't fix but it is no way luxury... think big airport hotel in need of modernising and you have the vibe. That said the staff are great... friendly and helpful slots the board. Food in the buffet is very samey but that it what you expect in all inclusive. Fresh cooking is grilled meat, fish and a wood fired pizza oven. If the advertised theme nights happened then they all seemed to be the same. Outside of mealtimes there is only cookies, cake, pizza, cheese pie and ice cream available in the family area. Included drinks are limited but quickly served with a smile. Setting is really stunning though... Built into the cliffside with amazing views across to Agia Pelagia. Watching the sun go down with a cocktail is the perfect way to round off dinner. It is clean and tidy with a daily maid service. The main pool gets busy with soon bathers but they pool itself is generally not too busy. Misty of the time there is water volleyball happening which kids can join in... All of the families playing welcomed our sun to join in As other reviews have said there are lots of steps so definitely not great for anyone with limited mobility. Couple of tips/observations: Scuba school staff are great but they do not accept card payments so you need to have cash Family maisonette has loads of space but no internal doors so not a lot of privacy if that worries you In our experience guests are French, German, Dutch, UK but very friendly and a nice mix of cultures. Not a place for groups of lads or girls looking for a party though.. There is nothing within walking distance and it is family orientated.. Sunbeds at main pool are taken by 9.30 every morning so get there early if you want one. So in summary if you manage your expectations as to the accommodation and facilities it's well worth the money especially as it is only a 25 minute/30euro cab ride from the airport... Out flight landed at 12.45 and we were at the resort an hour later.

Response from Theo Savuidakis, Guest Services / Front Office at Athina Palace Resort & Spa
Responded 1 week ago
Thank you very much for choosing our hotel for your holidays. First, we would like to point out that we are happy to hear your nice comments regarding the views from our hotel, the cleaning and the staff who really try to satisfy all the needs of the guests. We are surprised by your comments about our buffet as we usually get a lot of compliments from our satisfied guests. Because we consider food to be one of the most important aspects of a hotel stay, we offer a wide variety of dishes prepared with fresh, high quality, local ingredients. As for sun beds, we want to inform you that there are enough for everyone. As for the stairs, we provide our guests with a 24 hour shuttle service inside the hotel. For young people, the hotel hosts a disco every day. As well as sports activities in the active pool, tennis courts and other entertainment. In addition, the city of Heraklion is only 20 minutes drive from our hotel and is ideal for exploring the capital and shopping. For the convenience of hotel guests, there is a scheduled shuttle bus every day. In addition, Agia Pelagia, 5 km from hotel, is probably Heraklion's most popular tourist resort, full of traditional Greek taverns, bars and cafes, as well as souvenir and even jewelry stores. We would like to assure you that we are always working to develop and improve our services, taking into account any suggestions and feedback from our guests. We look forward to welcoming you again for another enjoyable experience at Athina Palace Resort and Spa.

Me and my friend stayed at this hotel for 8 days and we enjoyed it very much. It's a perfectly nice Greek five star hotel complex. Don't expect global "five star luxury", but other positives - for the price, it's absolutely amazing, beautiful views, perfect location, nice rooms, great all inclusive food, nice beach with a bar and sunbeds included, many amenities, fair price car rental, just super worth it. In case you visit with family, there's a big pool, in case not, there're two other adult only, very calm, amazing view and another bar once again. The staff made our stay especially relaxing. Thanks to Maria for nonstop coffee refills in the mornings, all the cooks for great and fresh food, Nicolas for the wine and trip tips at dinners, Popi at the relax pool bar and Manolo for perfect service at the a la carte restaurant. SPECIAL thanks to the amazing Eva at the relax pool bar for her friendly though professional approach, who btw remembered my order from the first day, I didn't even need to say anything from that moment. That's what I call a vacation. It's a beautiful five stars hotel with a serious Greek spirit.

Me and my friend stayed at this hotel for 2 weeks. Overall our vacation was good, sea was perfect, service was good and food also, but we didn’t like our room 738 at all. Firstly, when we arrived, there was no wi-fi connection in our room for 2-3 days. Our room was very old and dark. We asked hotel management to offer us renovated room, but they only showed us very old sea view room with extra charge 20 EURO per day. We had friends from Germany in this hotel. And they were living in a very nice, new, renovated room. With lots of electricity and other essentials. I’m more than sure that this hotels prefers Europeans guests who stay for 7-8 days only. I was very disappointed, such a racism relationship. By the way, we are from Kazakhstan. PS. this hotel prefers French people, animation is in french, all activities are in french. Such a shame! This hotel should understand that many Kazakh tourists started visiting Greece this year and Kazakh people stay at least for 2-3 weeks. They pay extra fees for rooms and other services. If hotel management doesn’t change it’s attitude, then there are will be no guests from Kazakhstan. Thank you.

We had room 325 with sea view, all clean, undamaged. Cleaned daily, bottled water supplied also daily to the room. Bottle of wine as a welcome dring ready on arrival. Nice bathroom. Shuttle van going to beach and back. Pools great, though bit cold, yet that may be subjective. Towell exchange service very appreciated. Beachsituated in a small yet cosy sea bay, with clear water (blue flagged), plastic particles in water and beach gravel in same amounts as anywhere else currently, some unscrupulous people will just not matter the environment........ Food great, drinks as well, all inclusive worked here well. Coffee quality could be improved though. I would like to highlight the professionalism of the staff, the service was simply at a great level, manager on duty visible all day long caring about flawless course of the hotel day. Final day we had the return flight late at night, so we paid 50EUR for late check-out and kept the room till 6pm.

Stayed here for one week end of June 2022. We would highly recommend, large resort with great main pool + adults only pools. We read some bad reviews before, but we personally had no issues. On day 2 our A/C stopped working in our room, within 30mins they had arranged a new room for us and sent someone to help with our bags. Good choice of food & drink, all staff were polite & helpful. Hotel was very clean and tidy throughout. Our only comment for future guests there is little to do within walking distance of the resort. If you're looking for some bars/restaurants or a beach day a short taxi drive to Lygaria Beach is recommended!
