Our hotel is situated in part of the eighteenth-century “Catasto Leopoldino” in the historic centre of Montalcino. The rooms at the back afford a splendid view, taking in the Val d’Orcia and the Val d’Arbia.Opening out onto this backdrop is a large, panoramic garden, where a swimming pool has been created to resemble a medieval fountain. In the remaining rooms, some of which are laid out on two levels, you can breathe in the typical atmosphere of an ancient Tuscan village.

Hotel dei Capitani is a great choice to stay in Montalcino. Overlooking the valley it offers absolutely wonderful views so it’s definitely worth splashing out on a superior room to enjoy the vista. Otherwise the pool is a fantastic way to do the same with an aperol spritz or a glass of Brunello wine in hand.

Well located for a visit to Tuscany. This was out third stay here and enjoyable as always. It's in a good location on the edge of the town and it's swimming pool has great views down to the surrounding countryside, the only downside is that it's on the north-east side of the town so the pool does loose sun in the late afternoon. Very friendly & welcoming staff. Good breakfast buffet.

I had accidentally booked two single beds but they kindly changed the room and also let us checkin early. So very good start! The view is stunnning from the rooms that are a little pricier but worth it. We chilled on the terrace in the afternoon and walked into the village - 5mins and you are there. The breakfast was delicious - even had decaf with soya milk! And you have it with the view outside. Only down is the noise...the rooms have thin walls. We would come again!!!

We spent 3 nights here in mid-July, and overall we enjoyed our stay. I have some pros, but also a big (to us) con that put a damper on our stay. I apologize for the long text... CON: We booked in February (2 adults, 2 teenaged daughters, 18 and 13), and we considered taking 2 rooms, but asked about the quadruple rooms, if they would be a good alternative for us. They offered us the open plan quadruple room at € 159, or a ”mini-flat” (not described on the website, 2 bedrooms, one with valley view) at € 179. We asked about the sleeping arrangements for the girls. The mini-flat was said to have a ”queen BED”, 140 cm wide. The quadruple was said to have a SOFABED of the same size as the BED in the mini-flat, and also a ”pouf”/extra single bed. We chose the higher priced ”mini-flat”, as it had 2 separate rooms, a real bed (not sofabed) and valley view. Of course, we know 140 cm is not really a queen bed (queens are 150-154 cm), but decided 140 cm would work for the girls. But when checking in, we saw that the promised “queen” BED of 140 cm, was actually an uncomfortable SOFABED, and only 120 cm wide. It would not work for the girls to share. We asked if we could have a rollaway bed squeezed in, but were told no. We referred to the incorrect information we had been given when booking, that the small sofabed would not work for our girls, and asked if we instead of the mini-flat could have 2 double rooms, at a good price. Since the whole issue was related to them giving incorrect information on the bed size and type. They said no, we had to keep the flat, at original price, but could have an extra room and pay a slightly reduced price for the total (= high total). A lot of negotiation followed, were they actually at one point offered us to switch to 2 superior rooms, but at a HIGHER price than the one actually offered on their own website that same day!!! They finally accepted to give us 2 double rooms at the CURRENT rate (no discount/compensation), but we chose not to accept. Instead we asked if we could switch to the quadruple room, that we were considering from the start, because it had an extra bed. We were told that we could switch, and “the quadruple would normally be more expensive”, but they were “willing to give it to us for the same price as the mini-flat”... Eeeh, no, the quadruple would NOT normally be more expensive - in Feb, it was offered to us at € 20 LESS than the miniflat (€ 159 vs € 179). More negotiation. We ended up switching to the quadruple, at € 165 - we just didn’t want to spend any more time discussing. So: We ended up with a normally cheaper room than the one we booked, without a view, and paying more than if we had chosen this same room in February. All because the hotel claimed that the 120 cm sofabed, was actually a queen bed 140 cm wide. And we keep wondering: Why did they not just take responsibility for their mistake, and offer us a good solution from the start? It would not have cost them much, and would have saved them this review... PROS: - The view from the pool and breakfast area/terrasse and view rooms. Amazing! (Just beware that the pool is rather chilly.) - The service at the breakfast buffet was very good and friendly. (The selection was quite limited, and there were no hot items like eggs/bacon like our 2 following hotels had/have, but under the circumstances it was ok.) - The location of the hotel is excellent, inside the town centre, close to everything. - We had good recommendations for vineyards to visit and restaurants. - They skipped charging us for the pool towels (normally they charge for these). - Free parking. All in all it was a good stay, but I really think the situation with the rooms/incorrect information couldand should have bern handled better.

We enjoyed our one night stay in Montalcino. The room was exactly as pictured In TA. We booked this hotel on Rick Steve’s recommendation and were not disappointed. Nice walking thru town from this location. Breakfast was very nice and the staff were very professional.
