When our original plans to camp outdoors were thwarded by sub-zero temperatures, we found this place and we loved it. The staff worked really hard to accomodate us by finding the best room configuration and making sure everything was set for our last minute arrival. It's not the Ritz, but a friendly, well-run lodging for backpackers and outdoorsy types who...

Realised within half an hour of booking that I had selected the wrong weekend! I was told at booking that deposit was non-refundable but after emailing Crossing Backpackers and explaining my situation to Leanne, she immediately refunded my deposit as there was no availability on the weekend I actually wanted. So although we didn't stay here, just leaving a review...

The welcome was warm and the hosts were attentive to the guests. They even offer a shuttle service to take to the town to catch the bus. Housekeeping is done every day. The environment is great, you can watch horses running and Daisy the pig, which is very endearing. We loved the Tongariro crossing, which is not far from the...

Stayed here for 2 nights while doing the tongariro alpine crossing. Staff were lovely, very helpful when we had an issue with buses! They organised a shuttle bus to and from the alpine crossing for $30 each (discount as we were staying for 2 nights). A nice location in the countryside with a good sized kitchen, great recycling facilities and...

I have practically nothing but good things to say about the hostel. Some people may be put off by the distance of the hostel from the local shop; however, the owners were more than happy to give me a free lift into town to purchase some food for the Alpine Crossing. The hostel itself feels like it should be on...

Highly recommend for all looking for a warm friendly place to stay. The hostel felt like home, a warm fire and incredibly friendly and helpful staff, the owner was even generous enough to give the three of us a lift to Whakapapa village! The hostel is perfect for all ages, an amazing Narnia themed room for children and a large...

We stayed at the crossing backpackers before we did the northern circuit hike and we absolutely loved it! Amazing service and the owners are very kind. It is very quirky compared to a lot of backpackers hostels we have stayed in and we all loved it and will be back in the future! Thanks a tonne!

Room was clean, staff were helpful and knowledgeable of the area. Lovely kitchen area, lovely games room and lovely spa bath. Cool movie room, just not many movies to pick from/popular choices... Free tea and coffee.

When I first arrived I was a bit unsure about this one, but when I took myself on a tour of the place I soon discovered it was a tardis. MUCH bigger inside than it appears from outside. The water pressure isn't great, but I think that says more about my spoilt big-city under-appreciation of the scarce resource than about...
