Detailed Reviews
Excellent B&B which has recently had new owners so there was a bit of work going on when we were there, which wasn’t a problem it just makes me want to go back again to see the finished article! Very well priced for the area and the room was comfortable and warm, but the icing on the cake was the breakfast, it was amazing and my companion claimed it was the best breakfast she’d ever had, so there! Highly recommend.

I booked room 3 and stayed there with my partner Alison and our 8yr old Sophie last summer. We loved it so much I saved my pennies for a longer stay this year (2012). The view from the window couldn't be better. The welcome from Beth and Mike (and this year, Bridget also) was the warmest possible: it matched the weather! We all loved the breakfast, although the girls struggled with the quantity, not being used to it! The room was clean and tidy and (mostly) we kept our shoes off indoors to keep it that way. Beth even took Sophie with her when walking the dogs... it was one of THE holiday highlights for her! Will we return again? You know the answer to that one!

Thank you for your kind comments We inspected the bed and sure enough it was very creaky as a result we have now sorted this problem and with the addition of wood glue as well as the bolts tighted up the bed will now provide a silent night hope to see you again soon. Best regards Beth and Mike.

I asked in advance if we could drop bags off, and this was agreed. However, when we arrived there was a note on the door, asking us to ring the mobile number, and then we were given the keysafe details over the phone, to let ourselves in. I did not find this very welcoming, but luckily I did have my mobile phone with me !. At the same time I was asked what time I wanted breakfast the next morning, not a good time to ask, while you are struggling with a key safe and getting luggage over the door step. We were in the top flat. 3 flights of steep steps up, which was a struggle getting the luggage up on our own. The view over the harbour was good. the shared bathroom, was not on the same floor as our room, and had no towels in to dry your hands. I texted my preferred time for breakfast as there was nowhere obvious to leave a note. Next day at breakfast was the first time I saw our host, who apologised for not greeting us as she was out shopping! Breakfast was nice, but then we had paid an extra £5 each for that. I will not be staying here again.

The bathroom and toilet doors will not fasten shut from inside which may be OK in your own home but not somewhere with facilities shared by strangers. A couple of bolts is all that's needed. The sugar in my room was old and had been damp so it was solid. Breakfast was at a communal table so you eat alongside strangers.
Due to a genuine mistake (I confused the cost of a future stay with the Castell's prices) I paid most of what was owed but was £30 short and will post the balance on but on return home I had a rather abrupt and not very friendly message on my answer machine saying I actually owe more than I do - there was NO receipt offered so I wrote it down on the reverse of the slip from the money machine.
I will not stay there again as the friendliness is superficial.

Thanks Hazel for your comments. Thankyou also for paying the balance on your account and for your apology, greatly accepted. For the reference of Tripadvisors reading this 'not so nice posting' Hazel admits that she confused the money with another booking in Caernarfon which she had also booked online! Nevermind we all make mistakes, but it was quite a damming posting, an apology for everyone else to see would be nice please Hazel. As for your other comments, yes maybe the bolts on the doors are a little tricky but everyone else seems to have no problem with them but we have changed them now! As to the seating arrangement at breakfast everyone seems to love it apart from Hazel!! If you would have preferred to sit on your own to have your breakfast you only needed to say so (there were only 2 more people at Castell during your stay). Anyway we shall carry on regardless as everyone seems to love what we're doing, we surely cannot please everyone as long as we please the majority of our visitors that's great. Many thanks for all your comments Hazel, everything has been dealt with. Many thanks Beth and Brigette.

We were upgraded on arrival to the apartment on the ground floor - our bedroom had a plumbing fault - and found it most comfortable and spacious. Breakfast was taken upstairs in a light and pleasant dining room with views over the harbour. The full English breakfast was a feast (including black pudding!), and we enjoyed talking to the other residents.
It took us ten minutes to find Garth Terrace, Driving uphill along Garth Road from the town centre, notice where the double yellow lines end on the right, and you have arrived. There is a narrow footpath returning up a slight slope - on the wall is a street sign: RHESDAI GARTH. This is Welsh for Garth Terrace. "Y Castell" is the large house nearest the road. We were lucky, and parked at the end of the double yellow lines for the duration of our stay. There is a public car park three minutes walk away in the town centre. Returning down the hill towards the Railway Station (for the Welsh Highland Railway and the Blaenau Ffestiniog Railway) turnright into Lombard Street and at No.14 there is The Ship Inn. We had supper there both nights of our stay and can thoroughly recommend it.
Beth and Bridget made us very welcome and everything was done to make us feel at home. The "Castell" is now closed until the end of March, but we look forward to returning next year. The telephone number on their web site is no longer active; use their mobile numbers in the "Contact us" box.

My partner and I stayed in the self-contained appartment for 4 nights and I guess the most important statement is that we would happily stay here again when in Porthmadog.
Rooms were clean and well appointed, the breakfast was great for our tastes and they were very flexible. Both Bridget and Beth were very friendly and welcoming. We actually ate out each night so didn't use the cooker but it looked clean and in good condition. The fridge-freezer worked (was cold inside) but did make quite a loud noise when the pump was running after the second night. Being a light sleeper I had to turn it off overnight in the end.
Porthmadog itself is a good location to explore the surrounding area and a reasonable location for places to eat & drink in the evening. Its a quiet town so don't expect too lively a night out but the closet pub to the B&B was also the friendliest, The Ship Inn which is 3mins walk.
Borth-y-gest is about 10-15min walk from the B&B and although very small is a great place to visit, the tea room was very good.

I stayed at Castell back in April and unlike the previous viewer i found both Bethan and Bridgett to be friendly, genuine and accomodating...such a welcome relief after a long journey.
Breakfast was well cooked and plentyful. The Castell has a great view overlooking the harbour...and it's also in a convenient location for the Welsh Coastal path and some lovely woodland walks in Pen y banc.
I loved the Castell and will look forward to my next visit. Diolch yn fawr Bethan!

I rang Beth last week when we had snow at home and there wasn't any in Wales, I was loathed to pay and book somewhere in case we couldn't go. Beth was happy with that and asked me to advise her on Saturday morning. We arrived late afternoon to a very warm welcome. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the bathrooms spotless. We mentioned we were going to have some wine and nibbles with our friends and she immediately provided wine glasses and suggested putting the gas fire on. Sunday breakfast was very good and plenty of it. Thank you Beth for making our visit so pleasant, We hope to return again soon.
