Stonefield Castle Hotel is an outstanding example of Scottish baronial architecture. Built in 1837, the Castle stands high on the famous Kintyre peninsula, commanding spectacular panoramic views over Loch Fyne. In keeping with its unique location and character, many of the original period furnishings have been retained to complement the timeless ambience that is Stonefield Castle. Guests can relax in the traditional elegance of wood panelled lounges with fine corniced ceilings, unwind on leisurely walks through the sixty acres of woodland grounds, or simply enjoy a leisurely pace of life far removed from the stress of city living.

Stonefield Castle Hotel is steeped in history, offering guests a traditional atmosphere with an elegant decor that has been praised for its cozy fires and stately furnishings, despite some areas showing their age. The hotel's well-kept gardens and the scenic views of Loch Fyne are popular among guests, as are the comfortable rooms with modern bathrooms.
Staff are noted for their exceptional service, making stays pleasant. However, some travelers feel the pricing, particularly for meals, does not offer the best value.

Detailed Reviews
Just returned from a 2 night stay in this fantastic hotel which is set in beautiful grounds with stunning views of Loch Fyne. We had a comfortable room on the ground floor overlooking the gardens which had a separate sitting area with television. The bedroom area was tastefully decorated and also had a small tv. The bathroom was fully modernised with large shower unit and hot towel rail. The service was excellent and staff were very helpful considering how difficult it must be for everyone adhering to Covid restrictions. We felt safe at all times and noticed that as soon as tables were being vacated in the bar, they were cleaned thoroughly before anyone else used them. Food was delicious but In my opinion some items on the menu were a bit overpriced. There is a great walk round the grounds and the scenery is outstanding. The reception staff made us very welcome and took time to explain Covid restrictions and social distancing measures that have been put in place for our safety. I would definitely recommend this hotel and look forward to visiting again.

Spent 2 night stay on an Itison deal £50 towards the food. The room was fine had everything you require had a separate sitting room( which was nice to have due to the current virus situation) which meant you could sit and have a drink here staff were happy to supply ice. The shower was good room needing a bit of an update silicon round the shower in particular minor detail.
The food in the restaurant was excellent good to see local seafood produce on offer as specials Food on both nights was great and the the breakfast was also great full marks to the chefs. The service was also excellent so a thumbs up here too. Great walk around the island albeit a bit wet when we were there,
A lovely couple of days

My wife and I stayed for three nights recently at the Stonefield CastleHotel and right from the start, we were made to feel really welcome, with the lady from Reception taking us right to our bedroom door!
Our room was very comfortable, having a loch view and a king size bed! The bedroom had all the usual accoutrements and was most comfortable, with a large en-suite bathroom, with a bathroom, washbasin and a separate shower cubicle. This had all been recently refurbished and was in really good condition.
We ate one evening in the restaurant, which was in a wonderful location, looking out over Loch Fyne. It had three sides of glass and was very spacious, with plenty of room between the tables.
We really enjoyed our dinner there, one of us had salmon and the other had beef, both of which were well cooked, beautifully presented and well served. Indeed the restaurant staff were very attentive, very helpful and knowledgeable when it came to the menu and very courteous at all times. Breakfast was just the same, with a beautiful view across the loch to boot! Even the restaurant was busy at breakfast time, the staff ensured that we did not wait very long for anything, including superbly cooked breakfasts of one's own choice.
On the two other evenings, we ate in the bar from a very short bar menu. Our only complaint about the whole hotel was that both the restaurant and the bar menus were rather short on variety. Saying that, the four bar meals we had over two nights were really good - fish and chips, Scottish filet steak, baked salmon and Caesar salad! It was best to try and find a higher table!
The bar staff were also very helpful and friendly and look after all the guests very well. Indeed, all the hotel staff we came across were very friendly, courteous and polite at all times. They were certainly a very international group - with Italians, Hungarians, French, Australians and several other nationalities represented too.
We thoroughly enjoyed our hotel experience staying at Stonefield Castle and would definitely return again, if we were going to be in the Tarbert area. Thank you to everybody!

We stayed in what was described as a an upgraded garden view room. As you only saw the walls of the building from bed and the narrow window overlooked the parking area I think the. description upgraded garden view room was not accurate.
The hotel is a lovely old hotel in a lovely setting. The food was good but let down by waiting staff wearing white material gloves or disposable gloves and no evidence of them changing them all night. I observed staff wiping their nose, straightening their tie, taking gloves off and on to write and putting them in their pocket. We are all encouraged to wash our hands as much as possible as we all do these things and I would feel more comfortable if staff follow good hygiene in this way. Waiting staff also struggled to maintain any kind of distance from customers even when they were taking orders. There was was a total lack of ventilation in the dining room. They said they were not servicing tap water with your meal, but were quite happy to serve wine by the glass. They then charged over £4 for a bottle of welsh water! In the bar tables were not cleaned down after people left and customers were free to change tables at any time. We had been for a recent meal out near Edinburgh and observed very good hygiene and you felt much more comfortable with how they had carried out a covid risk assessment.

When our evening ferry to Islay (where we live) was cancelled at the last minute due to stormy and windy weather, we overnighted at the wonderful Stonefield Castle Hotel for the first time. Tyler at Reception was very informative, helpful, and kind. He walked us to our room, which is spacious and well-decorated and has separate rainfall shower from a large bath tub. The bathroom looks recently updated. In the lovely dining room, we were hosted by charming Jennifer who thoroughly explained the menu and recommended the special offer of the delicious Chateaubriand for 2, which went well with the Australian wine that we chose from an extensive wine list. It turned out that the hotel has several Australian staff members and they are friendly and hospitable. Tyler also showed up in the dining room to bring bread offerings to the table. There are several drawing rooms in the lobby where guests can relax and/or socialize. The hotel is dog-friendly and the dogs we saw were well-behaved. We had to leave the hotel early in the morning so Tyler arranged delicious and ample packed lunch (complimentary) for us. Can't wait to return here in warmer weather to walk the grounds. Thanks, Tyler, Jennifer and rest of staff for your thoughtful hospitality!

Went for the weekend. Positives included staff who were very friendly, helpful and professional. Walks around the grounds and island we’re lovely and we would recommend you walk to Tarbert for drinks and dinner (can walk through the woods from the hotel drive which means a shorter walk on the road).
Ice cream from shop in Tarbert was good.
However the hotel is in need of upgrade. Room was shabby, bed base was unpleasantly stained and bed was like lying on a plank of wood. Room was clean enough but on closer inspection could have been cleaner in light of current circumstances. As NHS workers this was a bit concerning as we have worked all through the pandemic and came to relax without being too concerned about anything.
Food was of good quality and cooked well but some portion sizes were poor with overpriced food and drink.
Would return to the area but not to this hotel unfortunately.

We booked the Stonefield Castle Hotel for a winter break via the discount website itison. Have to say we weren’t disappointed. The first thing that you see is the impressive views of Loch Fyne as the hotel is situated elevated on a hill. The staff at the hotel are all very friendly and give great attention to detail with a friendly touch. The staff love a chat and this makes your stay very comfortable. The rooms at the hotel are of good size and the super king size beds even in a lower budget garden room are the perfect touch. It looks like the hotel has had a refurbishment and the bar and lounge areas are very impressive!
Breakfast was very good and included a cooked breakfast. The dinner is very impressive and includes local fare and dishes - beautiful food!
The hotel is surrounded by Loch side walks and this just adds to a relaxing and very enjoyable time.
We will definitely be booking again.

This is a very run down hotel needs decorating and the carpets were filthy. Bedroom was tiny with the smallest most uncomfortable bed ever. Needed a deep clean especially around the toilet, bathroom was so small with an awkward sliding door. Window were dangerously rotten outside. Restaurant was bland with a nice view, staff were nice. Food was very good. Would not recommend or stay again ever. Very expensive to stay there for the standard of room and you pay extra for breakfast, child pays same price too. No daily cleaning of room or daily towel change, only stayed for two days glad it wasn’t a week. Could only use your own toilet so had to keep going back to my room to use it. This was annoying have to walk from the restaurant all the time. They said it was due to COVID you couldn’t use the hotel toilets.Due to COVID we cannot clean your room, rubbish. No fridge in room no safe in room and they had the cheek to charge £150 and £18 for breakfast. Car park was not lit at night totally pitch black when you went back to car at night, which was totally unsafe for you or the safety of your car.

It saddens me to read your review. You stayed in Room 18 last week, new windows were installed in this bedroom just 4 weeks ago so I'm at a loss to understand your comments. Myself and my staff bent over backwards to make your party welcome. Although your daughter's wedding ceremony was held elsewhere we pulled out all the stops to make sure you had the best table in our "bland" restaurant to enjoy the celebratory meal. We merely advise guests to use their room toilet, in no way is this mandatory. Our room attendants do not go into bedrooms during a stay but your welcome letter states that you can have as much clean towels, toiletries, te, coffee etc. As you like, you just have to ask at Reception and they will be delivered to you. These safeguards are for guests benefit during Covid. You booked a Room only rate and your grandson was not charged for breakfast, I have checked your bill. I am sorry you were so very unhappy with your stay, I welcome constructive criticism, but hope readers will take note of the many excellent reviews written before yours. I wish your daughter and her the husband the very best as newly weds.

Just been on our annual pilgrimage to the lovely Stonefield Castle hotel but somewhat disappointed this year by the lack of staff and the pricey bar meals.
I fully understand that in order to ensure that guests use the restaurant, bar meals have to be priced accordingly but £14.50 for a burger and £14.00 for fish and chips is just too much on top of the bar prices. Having a dog restricts the use of the restaurant so bar meals are the onl;y means of eating locally. Staff are friendly enough but having to wait at the bar until the staff complete their other tasks is really frustrating. Temperature in the hotel was very warm so energy bill must be high. Enjoyed the stay but worked out really costly when you add everything up

Me and my partner stayed for 2 nights bed and breakfast with a £50 voucher for food in the restaurant on the first night , a very good deal in my opinion ! Food was really good in my opinion but was very over priced . I thought the staff could have been much better , we waited an excessive amount of time for breakfast most mornings 20 minutes just for our cup of tea and 40 minutes for our breakfast and the same at dinner ! Food was good though . The bar is very pricey and being charged £2.55 for a small mixer for my rum I thought was exuberant on the hotels part and very cheeky . I had a bad sleep both nights the mattress was solid and the rooms freezing . The grounds and setting of the hotel are beautiful and amazing if your a nature lover I wish I had taken more advantage of the stunning walks around the hotel . The hotel was very dated and could do With a bit of work inside to modernise the place . The staff could also do with a bit of a brush up as well and learn to keep their thoughts to them self’s when they aren’t happy . And to end the review the men’s toilet on ground floor was a disgrace the waste pipe from the 3 urinals are leaking you SHOULD NOT place buckets underneath and let them fill with urine , this is not okay especially in the current climate an average review here is being generous !

We had a lovely afternoon tea - with about 30 mins notice ! Dogs are allowed everywhere indoors, except the dining room.
You can eat in the bar - we had our tea in one of the lounges, it was delicious !!!
Scotland doesn't really have a summer lol we can have 4 seasons in one day however I'd say the best weather we have had recently has been late May- August. Hope the sun shines for you! SAOR ALBA 🌞
I do not think so as I did not see a lift.
You would have to give them a call to check for sure.
Yes, you won't be disappointed.
