Dotted between the palm trees of Zanzibar's South East Coast, along an unfurling swathe of postcard-perfect coastline, sits Hakuna Majiwe, the Place of No Stones, a site so idyllic that we named our hotel after it. The 21 luxury cabanas of Hakuna Majiwe Lodge are spread out along this quiet, palm-fringed beach, each leading straight out onto the hourglass-fine sands and jade waters of the Indian Ocean. The cabanas pay homage to our host culture, mixing thatched roofs and wooden floors with the intricate ornamental vidaka plasterwork of the Swahili Coast to create a space that is both shamba chic and authentic in style. Walk-in dressing areas, artisan four-poster beds and generous bathrooms ensure that style is complemented by the comforts expected on your holiday. Be it a private honeymoon retreat or hosting your family in our dedicated 5 bed suites, comfort and privacy are always guaranteed. And at the heart of the tropical splendour of our spacious grounds sits the Tradewinds Restaurant, from where our hard-earned reputation for can-do hospitality has been forged. An evolving menu of Swahili-Zanzibari cuisine using locally-sourced ingredients is freshly prepared with International flair each and every day, paired with carefully-selected wines and juices, to create lasting culinary experiences, worthy of your visit. Private dining, with butler service, is always available for those seeking intimate memories to dine for. Jungle Spa and landscaping our expansive, palm-lined pool sheltered in the abundant tropical splendour of the Hakuna Majiwe estate. With a kite school for the more intrepid guests and an excursion centre for the more curious wishing to explore the island, there is always something to do if the relaxation becomes too much. Our home is where our heart is, though, and Life is Always A Beach at Hakuna Majiwe.

Such an incredible stay for a vacation. I was dreaming of living in a small house by the beach and eating fresh fruits everyday, this hotel has the exact same vibe. if you like to relax and have a quiet surrounding, this is your place to go. Good for families, pairs and people who love quite. The location of the hotel was good, not too far from Paje downtown, with an empty beach. What I liked most about the hotel was the vibe and atmosphere, really nice employees, which are taking care of you and making sure you have a good time, they pay attention to details, what I really liked. The housekeeping is coming twice a day. As you are taking your dinner, they are preparing your bed for sleep with the mosquitonet and spray. Everyone is greeting you, making sure you feel good. I haven’t noticed any bad vibes at all. The hotel rooms need some renovation, especially the bathrooms and the food also a little bit of upgrade. But still a really nice place to stay, would definitely recommend it.

The worse stay in the whole island, we did not feel safe, I have been to Zanzibar twice and I swear it is the worse nightmare and worse people over there, no facilities no internet no ac and food quality is beyond poor, no place to chill as the workers are sleeping at the reception all day all night, spiders at the bathroom and blood stains on bed sheets add to that that after our payment was disclosed through booking their unsettled manager called us the police as he wanted to pay one more time at the property they made us pay for free water they raised the rate on us, they did everything a person doesnt want on his vacation, stay away from this sick place please and ps it is in jambiani not paje as they claim

Location The lodge is in a beautiful location on Paje beach with both Paje and Jambiani within walking distance along the beach (Paje about 20 mins and closest). Swimming is great at high tide and you can walk out in ankle deep water at low tide for quite a way. The area has both fisherman and seaweed farming so is great to sit and watch these activities every morning. If you don't like wind then I would suggest booking elsewhere. In the morning there is a breeze which develops into a gale at lunchtime hence the reason it is hugely favoured by kite surfers. It also makes the temperature feel comfortable and when walking along the beach you hardly notice it. Best thing to do as we found is to sit out by the beach after breakfast and then retreat to the pool after lunch as that is very sheltered. Don't be tempted to buy anything from the "Plastic" Masai on the beach as the jewellery and knick-knacks are over-priced, mass produced tat. It's best to ignore them as they won't leave you alone if you engage in conversation and will even follow you into the sea. They don't however harass you as much as they do in Kenya. I never felt unsafe at all anywhere on the island and the people are very friendly wherever you are. Youtube footage that I took of the hotel is available if you search the hotel. The Accommodation We stayed in one of the Ocean view rooms at the furthest point from the main lodge and it was only circa 100m from our door to the sea. The room was cleaned very well daily and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom needs to be upgraded desperately but was serviceable. The aircon worked but we rarely needed it as there is no glass in the windows (mosquito netting) and the constant breeze (and sometimes gale) that blows in off the ocean keeps the temperature down. Outside there is a bench and a swinging hammock both of which are in the shade of the porch and it's lovely to sit out here. WiFi works throughout the grounds of the hotel and runs to about 10Mbps. The Food The food was very basic and the service absolutely atrocious apart from breakfast which is a buffet. Breakfast is good with both pancakes and omelettes on offer. Lunch is and dinner is bland and basic with up to a 2 hour wait for your food. We made the mistake of going All Inclusive which meant that we felt we had to eat most of our meals there as we had paid for them. We did start to go to Mr Kahawa in Paje for lunch and this is a great option with amazing meals and great coffee right on the beach with really good WiFi thrown in. Pricing is very similar to Europe and there is a 5% charge for paying by card and a conversion rate applied to dollars so you are better off taking Tanzanian Shillings with you. We also ate at the Rock restaurant and my review is available on Flickr if you search for user SheldrickFalls One other thing is that the fridge in the bar just isn't cold enough at the hotel and most beers I had were lukewarm. Excursions Do not buy any excursions from the hotel unless you're happy to pay more than double but rather go online and check out Taxi drivers in Paje. We used Lee in Paje and one other guy whose name escapes me but all easily found online: Blue lagoon including taxi, conservation fee, private boat, snorkelling gear (we took our own), water and fruit platter was USD65 and took about 4 hours in total. Stone Town (about 1 hr drive) including taxi and English speaking guide was USD70 and great value for the 4 hour round trip (you can stay longer but we'd seen all we wanted to). Zanzibar Coffee house is a must visit with coffee served at the very top with views over Stone Town. The Rock - taxi to the restaurant (about 20 mins) was USD20. If you're going here make sure that you book way in advance of your trip Jambiani Reef - If it's all about the reef then go to Blue Lagoon or further North to Mnemba island but we picked up a dhow from outside the hotel for USD20 and they took us out to the reef for snorkelling. Worth it for the boat ride and you can see that on Youtube if you search. The grounds of the hotel You can truly believe the name of the hotel which means "without stones" and you can walk barefoot everywhere unless you leave the beach. The grounds have some beautiful mature trees and as a result a troop of both Sykes and Colobus Monkeys come through every day and offer lots of opportunity for close up photos. You certainly don't need to go to Jozani Forest to see them as the guide books suggest and you will also see them near the road on the way from the airport as it passes the forest. If you like birds then the grounds and also the beach at low tide are great for this and I saw a few special birds along the way such as Broad Billed Rollers, Crab Plovers, Green Sunbird, Western Reef Herons (both black and white morphs), Golden Weavers and the elusive White Browed Coucal amongst many others. My only complaint here was the pool was dark green when we arrived and remained so for our first week whilst they awaited the arrival of a new part for the pump. This was fixed for the second week and it is a beautiful pool and very quiet. The staff Apart from Charles and Happiness the waiting staff were inexperienced and spoke little English. Ordering food was comical at times but what they lacked in experience they more than made up for in enthusiasm. There was on waiter that we called "you're welcome" as he would dump down the drinks or food and shout "you're welcome" before we had a chance to say anything.

Hakuna Majive is truly an amazing Beach Lodge. We were warmly greeted by Staffs they seem to be omnipresent looking after all our needs. The Staff at Hakuna Majive was extremely warm, welcoming and caring. Our partial sea view room was extremely comfortable and we could spend hours in the balcony. The contrast between high and low tide stunning. The food was outstanding. Every dish presented in style and very tasty. The drinks and cocktails top notch. This was the only truly property on our entire trip. Thank you the entire Hakuna Majive team. If I could would give them 10 stars

We arrived at 23.00 and the room was very bad condition. Aircondition was not working, bed was making noise, and when we complaint there was only a mechanic who visit us trying to solve problems. We decided to leave next morning. There was no problem in returning the money which we earlier paid (plan was to stay 4 nigjts, not 1) It is next to the beach but Ocean View room is far from the beach and you can hardly see ocean … because of the roof There is no glass in the windows - so even when aircondition start working it is hard…
