Travellers' Choice
Dotted between the palm trees of Zanzibar's South East Coast, along an unfurling swathe of postcard-perfect coastline, sits Hakuna Majiwe, the Place of No Stones, a site so idyllic that we named our hotel after it. The 21 luxury cabanas of Hakuna Majiwe Lodge are spread out along this quiet, palm-fringed beach, each leading straight out onto the hourglass-fine sands and jade waters of the Indian Ocean. The cabanas pay homage to our host culture, mixing thatched roofs and wooden floors with the intricate ornamental vidaka plasterwork of the Swahili Coast to create a space that is both shamba chic and authentic in style. Walk-in dressing areas, artisan four-poster beds and generous bathrooms ensure that style is complemented by the comforts expected on your holiday. Be it a private honeymoon retreat or hosting your family in our dedicated 5 bed suites, comfort and privacy are always guaranteed. And at the heart of the tropical splendour of our spacious grounds sits the Tradewinds Restaurant, from where our hard-earned reputation for can-do hospitality has been forged. An evolving menu of Swahili-Zanzibari cuisine using locally-sourced ingredients is freshly prepared with International flair each and every day, paired with carefully-selected wines and juices, to create lasting culinary experiences, worthy of your visit. Private dining, with butler service, is always available for those seeking intimate memories to dine for. Jungle Spa and landscaping our expansive, palm-lined pool sheltered in the abundant tropical splendour of the Hakuna Majiwe estate. With a kite school for the more intrepid guests and an excursion centre for the more curious wishing to explore the island, there is always something to do if the relaxation becomes too much. Our home is where our heart is, though, and Life is Always A Beach at Hakuna Majiwe.

The hotel is surround by a beautiful garden. Tropical trees, palms. Sand is everywhere underfoot. It’s possible to walk barefoot all over the hotel and to the ocean. An excellent beach comes close to the hotel. It is wide and quiet. Amazing views at the turquoise ocean! A nice bungalow with a wooden terrace and an exotic reed roof. At the doorstep there is a water tap to wash feet from sand. Every evening the staff sprays the room against mosquitoes. The only disadvantage is slightly salted water in water pipes. (Anyway water in pipes isn’t potable in Africa.) The village is about half an hour on foot along the beach. And it isn’t near when you go under the burning sun! If you go to the village after sunset, you certainly need a flashlight. There are no lights at the beach, and the night is entirely dark. In general this is a perfect place for quiet and leisurely rest and to be close to tropical beauty.

Our stay at Hakuna Majiwe was truly wonderful. We felt very welcome from the first moment. The location is so peaceful and quiet, right on the beach with amazing views of the ocean. Our beach bungalow was so nice, we loved the private terrace with a swing for relaxing, the bed decorated with flowers, the spacious luggage room. The restaurant area was very beautiful with stunning views during the day and beautifully lit up in the evening. We really enjoyed having our breakfast and meals here - abundant and delicious and with ocean views. There is also a large swimming pool with sunbeds, perfect for more relaxing. The staff were so sweet and polite, always smiling and offering to help. Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality.

I can't recommend this lodge enough. It is quite honestly paradise. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. They really are five-star service, so make sure you come with plenty of small bills (U.S. dollars) to tip for their excellent work. You really should come here. The beaches are well-maintained and the Indian Ocean is beautiful.

Together with my husband we've decided to choose Hakuna Majiwe mainly because its peaceful character and picturesque placement. But the reality exceeded our expectations. Hotel is placed directly on the beach. From the bed of your room we had view of the ocean. Food is just delicious. Every meal gives you a choice between meat, seafood or local - Swahili dish. Each of the options is tasty and crowned with a yummy dessert. Room service is extraordinary and caring about every detail - like decorating bed with flowers. Masai guards are protecting peace in the hotel but also are saving guests from beach vendors (who are really annoying sometimes) - which is really cool. Staff is very cheerful and always willing to help. It was a pleasure to learn from them basic of Swahili language and hear stories about life in Zanzibar. Absolutely I need to mention about bartender who was serving great drinks meanwhile entertaining us with his original songs. Asante sana! It was marvellous <3

We thought this hotel was amazing. Very quiet and relaxed with only 20 rooms it seemed. Delicious food and staff who are friendly and super-helpful. The beach is lovely and does what the Swahili name means - no stones - only smooth white sand. There's a brilliant pool for a small hotel and our teenagers loved it. Only thing you might want to consider is a bit of smell of seaweed at low tide but only close to the water, not in the hotel environs. The guys at the hotel do their best and bury the seaweed each low-tide but nature does what nature does and it's just part of being by the sea.
