Dotted between the palm trees of Zanzibar's South East Coast, along an unfurling swathe of postcard-perfect coastline, sits Hakuna Majiwe, the Place of No Stones, a site so idyllic that we named our hotel after it. The 21 luxury cabanas of Hakuna Majiwe Lodge are spread out along this quiet, palm-fringed beach, each leading straight out onto the hourglass-fine sands and jade waters of the Indian Ocean. The cabanas pay homage to our host culture, mixing thatched roofs and wooden floors with the intricate ornamental vidaka plasterwork of the Swahili Coast to create a space that is both shamba chic and authentic in style. Walk-in dressing areas, artisan four-poster beds and generous bathrooms ensure that style is complemented by the comforts expected on your holiday. Be it a private honeymoon retreat or hosting your family in our dedicated 5 bed suites, comfort and privacy are always guaranteed. And at the heart of the tropical splendour of our spacious grounds sits the Tradewinds Restaurant, from where our hard-earned reputation for can-do hospitality has been forged. An evolving menu of Swahili-Zanzibari cuisine using locally-sourced ingredients is freshly prepared with International flair each and every day, paired with carefully-selected wines and juices, to create lasting culinary experiences, worthy of your visit. Private dining, with butler service, is always available for those seeking intimate memories to dine for. Jungle Spa and landscaping our expansive, palm-lined pool sheltered in the abundant tropical splendour of the Hakuna Majiwe estate. With a kite school for the more intrepid guests and an excursion centre for the more curious wishing to explore the island, there is always something to do if the relaxation becomes too much. Our home is where our heart is, though, and Life is Always A Beach at Hakuna Majiwe.

Staying at Hakuna Majiwe felt like finding a hidden slice of paradise, a real good value for money. It was made even more special by the incredible team that runs the place. I came here with my parents and my sister this summer, end of July approx. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with such warmth and genuine care that it felt like coming home. The staff here aren’t just doing their jobs—they’re truly passionate about making your stay unforgettable. Every interaction, from the friendly greetings in the morning to the thoughtful touches throughout the day, showed how much they genuinely care about their guests' experience. They cared a lot, helping with the suitcases, bringing the food to the room (room service), showing a service and type of staff seen nowhere but as in Hakuna Majiwe.

What really stood out to me, though, was the food. Breakfast had a variety in worldwide and local food, which is thanked to try the flavors from Zanzibar. Every meal was a treat, bursting with fresh, local flavors, they tasted amazing, hats off to the chef, who even asked us if everything was good! The chefs clearly put their heart into every meal, and it shows.

If we had to mention a downside, we would say that, as we kind of came in a time in which there were no guests, we missed a bit more of activity, animation at the hotel… Though, some new guests came the last 2 days we had there.

Hakuna Majiwe isn’t just a hotel; it’s a place where you feel truly looked after, where every detail is taken care of so you can fully relax and enjoy your surroundings. The amazing staff, food and decoration made my stay here something I’ll always remember fondly!

Thanks!!

Magnificent place, the most beautiful and quietest beach on the island. Walking on the beach you can get safely to Paje and Jambiani in no time. always perfect cleaning (they set up the room every morning and if needed even once more, change towels whenever requested, and come in the evening to close the mosquito nets and do mosquito service). super helpful staff, ready to meet every need.
Great breakfast, both sweet and savory, lunches and dinners with excellent dishes.
Too bad it doesn't say anywhere that the main structure collapsed... but they managed to recreate a nice space with tables on the beach.
The forgiveness is great, they speak English, they are always kind, they help with luggage transport, they always ask if you have extra requests, they do 24-hour check at the Resort entrance gate. Would definitely stay again!

We spent 9 days here as part of a beach safari combo and we are very happy with our experience there!
the rooms in the bungalows are spacious and clean, direct access to Paje beach offers a wide choice of places to relax around the hotel!
We had excursions planned outside the hotel and the hotel did everything possible to facilitate our schedules: they prepared breakfasts for us in advance and were always very attentive to us
the staff are really lovely and the meals are varied and very good
At the reception we were welcomed and helped by Lidia
and at the restaurant here are the waiters and chefs who delighted us and took such good care of us: John, Abdoul, Angela, Majid, Maulid Hamza, Alphonse and Salma!
Without forgetting David the Massai leader!

After a week of safari in mainland, we were dleighted to rest in such a great place. The team had been very welcoming and always available. The Chef has developped a tasty menu - always fresh products for good value. Our kids were taught how to play local games while we had a relaxing time enjoying Julia’s massage or discussing with the team. We all enjoyed walking along the peaceful and beautiful beach only 10 minutes walk from the busy Jambiani where you can find bars if you’re looking for a fun night. We were only one hour away from the Stone Town or the North beach where you swam with dolphins. The whole team, includinf the kitesurf instructoe, has been very friendly and helpful. Our kids loved it here!

Just the right place if you want total relaxation and connect with nature as the property is surround by trees and beautiful coastline. True to the name, the sand is white and no stones. We were upgraded as our room AC unfortunately developed a problem. The manager Mr. Sourav made sure our stay was very comfortable. The Chef went out of his way to make sure we had nice seafood cuisine. Kudos to Mr. Sourav, Chef and the entire team!! The pool and it's surrounding environment which is also covered by trees giving you the feeling of being in the forest was amazing. On the flip side, the rooms should be fitted with glass windows so that the room gets cooled with AC. A place I will recommend.

The staff were friendly but the accommodation was very poor. We had a lodge facing the beach and while we didn’t expect luxury, we did expect it to be reasonable. Our main problem was that it was impossible to sleep because:
1. The bed was hard frame and protruded from the mattress so I was unable to get into it without first standing on a chair or stepping onto the chair to get out of it. I am of reasonable height.
2. The ceiling fan and air conditioning were old and exceptionally noisy … it was impossible to sleep with either one or both of them turned on. Consequently, it was very hot at night.
3. A light at the edge of the private beach was turned on at night and faced our lodge, shining into our room and keeping it light all night. There was no blind to pull at the window to block out the light.

The bathroom was basic and very old and worn. The food was OK but very limited choice.

The beach is a public beach so there are many people walking up and down selling various things. The sea is beautifully warm but you have to be careful because there are many people wind surfing or learning how to windsurf and you need to be able to avoid them.

We did not go into the pool as I wasn’t entirely sure how clean it would be given the standard of our room. It’s a shame the hotel seems to have deteriorated so much as I imagine it could have been lovely once but I definitely would not recommend it now.

We had a wonderful stay at Hakuna Majiwe in Paje.

Upon arrival we were enthusiastically welcomed with a drink.
The location is beautiful and right on the beach overlooking the Indian Ocean.

The staff is very friendly, the food is good and day trips can be booked at the reception if desired.

Dart board, table tennis table and football table available.
Free WiFi (also in rooms and at the pool).

The room and bathroom are spacious and attractive and there is a hammock on the terrace to relax with a view of the ocean.
There is a large swimming pool with sun loungers. My children loved that.

The lodge could use some maintenance (a lick of paint, parasols by the pool, etc.) but it is clean and the surroundings and hospitality are top notch.

Hakuna Majiwe is close to (30 min walk / 5 min by car) the center of Paje where you can find a supermarket, pharmacy, restaurant, bar and bank etc.

Asanteni sana! Tutaonana!

Nice getaway in a quiet and beautiful part of the beach. Ideal for kitesurfing, long beach walks, swimming in the Indian Ocean, working remotely or just relaxing. Partying in Paje is also an option, it is just a short 15 minutes beach walk to get there and particularly at the weekends it is quite a good party location without all the loud and drunk Russian people as in the North of the island.
The staff is very friendly and helpful, management extremely attentive. One star less to maximum due to the rooms that could be equipped with some more amenities such as coffeemaker, fridge, functional safe etc, and some of the rooms need some modernization. Additionally, the internet connection is sufficient for audio and video calls, but the website buildup is very slow, but the management is aware and working on a solution. However, only one star less because you can tell that the management is continually working on all issues, improvements are to be noticed and the price is reflecting the improvement process. We’ll definitely check in again soon (in two months or so) and update the review with some even better information.
Overall I would definitely recommend coming here, especially if you want a realistic price.

Great place where we spent a wonderful week, all the staff are very attentive, the waiters always pleasant, smiling. The cuisine is top notch, very varied. Feet quickly in the white sand, the Maasai guardians in this hotel are very friendly and communicate easily. Truly an unforgettable vacation spent in this magical place.

The welcome wagon at Hakuna Majiwe in Paje, Zanzibar was warm and hospitable. Lily at the reception was very accommodative and managed to get us whatever we needed on check in.

We were upgraded to a sea facing bungalow. A downside was that the rooms had no “closable” window shutters so the wind would blow in sand into the room. The bathroom was spacious but the water was too salty.

The meals were selected based on the day’s menu and the cost of the room was reasonable for a half board stay. The Chef - Immanuel, accommodated our requests and always prepared delicious meals. I’d suggest the grilled king prawns.

The housekeeping staff were kind, friendly and hospitable.

There were so many reasonably priced activities to select from and Lily organized everything for us.

The ambiance was serene and romantic, and we enjoyed our stay at this beautiful resort.
