There is so much I can say about how wonderful this place is. But for us it was more than a typical vacation, it was our combined wedding/honeymoon. The management and staff at the lodge, along with the assistance of the Asilia team, truly made this one of the happiest days of our lives. I let the Asilia team know...

We stayed here for a few nights after a safari trip and it was the perfect chill-out place. The bungalows are spacious and comfortable, each with an enormous hammock outside looking out to the sea - great spot to watch the sun go down from. The hotel itself is a good size and everything is nicely spaced out. The food...

The cons: it is really expensive and they could offer a few more things in the all inclusive package (e.g. only the alcohol that makes you blind are free). The lunch (buffet) is nice but nothing special. The pros: the place is isolated and gorgeous, the rooms are beautiful, the staff (from manager to waiters) is very friendly, the food...

We had the most fantastic trip. The staff were just fabulous as was the food. We are vegan and the food was perfect! The bungalow has a breathtaking view and the perfect place for a sundowner. Christmas dinner on the beach was also very special

The cabins are lovely - all overlooking the beach with small patios and a hammock. The bathrooms are beautiful, with large open showers and big bathtubs. A comfortable bed on a raised platform. Really lovely accommodations. The cabins are spaced out well along the beach but within the garden complex of the lodge. The meals are tasty and creative. Matemwe...

The Matemwe lodge is heaven. We had the most amazing stay and can't recommend it highly enough! On arrival we were welcomed by the General manager, manager and chef who catered perfectly for our vegan diet. Every member of staff seemed to really care that we were having a perfect stay. We can't wait to go back!

We were three honeymoon couples that spent four nights here. Everyone in the company was really impressed and satisfied with everything from the rooms, the service minded staff, the tasty food and the beautiful surroundings.

i can not tell how how happy we were to be at Matemwe lodge, wow - what a find and such an experience. This place has everything, from a beautiful story of how two sisters on their way to India found themselves in a once in a lifetime situation where the government was looking for foreigners to help build a...

My wife and I were here for 4 nights as part of a week away in Zanzibar. We were actually pretty sick the first day (nothing to do with the hotel) but it was a fantastic place to rest and recuperate watching the ocean with the ocean breeze. Even in your room you are at one with the sea. The...

We had two nights at Matemwe Lodge --- our only mistake in booking it was not staying longer. Martin, Rachel, Ross, and Gina and many other members of the staff went out of their way to ensure we had a fabulous stay. They managed a birthday cake with short notice, provided private dining and excursion options and all around made...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Vibrant yet relaxed Matemwe, one of the first lodges in Zanzibar, has perfected the tropical island experience. Perched on an outcrop overlooking a shallow coral fringed lagoon on the quieter northeast coast of Zanzibar, Matemwe’s peaceful location and famed relaxed atmosphere, makes it the ideal place to unwind. Guests quickly ease into the laid-back rhythm of island life, planning their day around the tides and their mood. The relaxed daily routines of Matemwe’s guests include enjoying fresh seafood, poolside cocktails, massages or simply hanging out in a hammock. The lodge has plenty on offer for the more active with superb diving and snorkeling off the renowned Mnembe Atoll; a highlight for many. Built from local materials and surrounded by beautiful lush gardens, each of the 12 spacious suites has a private veranda with a hammock and sofa and expansive views of the Indian Ocean with its constantly changing hues of blue. Here you can watch the fishermen head out every morning at dawn or listen to the songs of the village women as they harvest seaweed. The large bathrooms have both a deep bathtub and walk-in shower and all beds are enclosed by mosquito nets. The open-air restaurant sits just above the sea and has a tranquil lounge area with beautiful views of the palm fringed beach and gently rocking dhows. Seafood is the specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of African and European flavours. Dinner offers a choice of main courses with fish, meat and vegetarian options. Matemwe has a multi-level swimming pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar. ... more   less
