Flame Tree Cottages is a nice smaller hotel with direct access to the most beautiful beach. The houses are located in a beautiful floral park with bushes and beautiful trees. In all decorations, emphasis is placed on the aesthetic. The rooms are decorated with good space and beautiful furniture. You are received, shown around and arranged, by the most caring staff in the world. You wake up gently to the sound of the breakfast table covered on the private shady terrace. Here breakfast is served by a smiling waitress who will also make sure that you have slept well and that everything is as you want it, before you leave alone with the well-covered delicious breakfast table. The garden borders the beach and here you will find, among other things, sun loungers, hangers and sofa corners in the sand. The hotel bar is also located at that end. The perfect place to relax after the safari, or when you just want to relax in the shade under a palm tree, overlooking the water, a whole day in peace and tranquility. We also used the hotel's cozy, shady pool area in the afternoon when we needed a sun break. In the evening, the hotel guests are covered in the beach garden. Here you can enjoy the sunset and the delicious a la carte menu while the moon and the stars look forward. The waiters and the owner are attentive to the well-being of the guests, are ready to help with any questions or a cozy nonsense. Here you feel close to the sky.

We stayed here for the first week of 2025 and had a fantastic holiday. The hotel consists of single storey bungalows set within lush, mature gardens with the pool and sunbeds at the centre. The rooms are on the basic side, but were always immaculate and the bed was very comfy; they were cleaned daily and the beds turned down at night. The pool was great, fringed by mature plants and a giant Flame tree which was stunning. The staff were most friendly and helpful, and during our stay we regularly met the owner and his family who lived on site. Everyone was most accomodating. The highlight was the Hotel's location within Nungwi, it's beach bar and the exceptional sunsets every evening. Step out of the hotel gate and you are right on the beach: turn right for a quieter time or go left for plentiful bars and restaurants, all a short stroll away. None of the other hotels that we saw had the open garden space and relaxed atmosphere that Flame Tree Cottages has and we never had to fight for a sunbed. For us, it was the perfect choice and we will look to go back.

Flame Tree Cottages in Nungwi is an absolute must for those looking for a relaxing stay in a small scale, atmospheric complex. The rooms are simply furnished and have a spacious terrace where you will be served a delicious breakfast every morning. The restaurant's terrace offers spectacular views of the azure blue sea and white sandy beach. The small-scale character creates an intimate, quiet atmosphere, perfect for completely unwinding. The friendly and helpful staff make you feel right at home, and are always ready to make your stay unforgettable. The food is excellent, with fresh, local ingredients and a variety of (fish) dishes to enjoy. In addition, the garden around the complex is an oasis of peace, with beautiful plants and a lovely swimming pool to cool off in. Flame Tree Cottages effortlessly combines luxury and simplicity, giving you the perfect holiday experience. A gem in Nungwi!!

We had a fantastic stay here for two nights. This is a small hotel (which we prefer), the rooms are basic but clean and comfortable. The beds are comfortable, the a/c works well and there are fans, the shower was great. There is a safe in the room. We had our own little cottage that slept three. We had a nice patio with a view of the ocean. We were served a good breakfast on our patio each day. We had bottled water for brushing our teeth but not much more. The beachfront area is fantastic, cozy, serene, peaceful, quiet, it has a wonderful view of the ocean, there are comfortable lounge chairs to sit on and hammocks. We thought the food was very good, we had all of our meals there. The menu has a very good selection. For dinner, they set up tables and chairs directly on the beach where you can put your toes in the sand. The views of the sunsets are fantastic. One night they had live music. The beach is great for swimming right in front of the hotel. There are other hotels (most seem larger) and restaurants along the beach and it is nice to walk along the beach. There is a small town in the area that you can walk to. We did a snorkeling excursion from there which was great. Because the hotel only has a small number of rooms, you have a lot of privacy here and it never feels crowded. The staff here are wonderful, warm and welcoming. One staff person, Agnes stood out. She went above and beyond to welcome us and make our stay comfortable. She is so warm and kind. This is not a fancy hotel but it is comfortable, well maintained, has good food, great staff and is small so you don't have to deal with many other tourists. It has a great pool which we never even used since the ocean swimming was so amazing. We loved our stay here and highly recommend it.

Lovely small cottages dotted around a beautiful garden of shady trees and flowering bushes and a fabulous swimming pool in the centre of this. We had a family cottage with a sitting area, 2 double bedrooms, and a terrace outside, overlooking gardens and pool. The rooms are decorated with a nod to the Arabic influences on Zanzibar and feel like someone's home rather than a hotel. We loved the breakfast being brought to our terrace each morning. Extensive with pancakes. Muesli, eggs, juice, toast, coffee etc. This place has a very special position at the beach front. One of the best spots for watching the local fishermen and women out at low tide looking for shell fish and octopus, as well as the beautiful Zanzabari sunset. The food at Flame Tree was good and you have lots of other restaurants to try up and down the beach if you want to. There is a small village with a mass of tourist shops but fun to wander around. Make sure you stop off for coffee at Juvina Cafe - a tiny coffee and cafe that the super friendly Victoria runs. This said, it really is the staff that make this place so special. Always smiling and friendly and seem genuinely interested in how your day has been. A special thank you to the Hajis, City and Catherine, as we seemed to see them the most but again, everyone was so friendly. We hope to come back soon..

A Sad Decline: Flame Tree Cottages Resort, Zanzibar I'm writing this review with a heavy heart as I share my recent, disappointing experience at Flame Tree Cottages Resort in Zanzibar. This once-promising establishment has sadly fallen victim to incompetent management and staff. The food was a major letdown. The salad was bland and tasteless, lacking even basic condiments like oil and vinegar. The grilled chicken was barely cooked, if at all. It was clear that the kitchen staff had no idea what they were doing. The service was equally disappointing. Basic amenities like napkins, salt, and pepper were often forgotten or overlooked. We had to repeatedly ask for these items, which is unacceptable at any establishment. It's a shame to see such a beautiful location being wasted. The resort's potential is clear, but the current owners and staff are doing a disservice to their guests and the local community. I urge potential travelers to reconsider their choice and look for a more reputable option in Zanzibar. Look at my pics and see that the place might have seen better days and that it lacks management. The shop is empty except for 2 sad dyed out dresses and fading posters, all that's left of the barista bar is an old Lavazza sign (there is only instant coffee now) and the Manager's seat seems to be free all day... Sad!

The Flame Tree cottages are set in a large and lush beachfront garden on what is arguably the best location of Nungwi. The cottages are a bit dated but spacious with wonderful verandas. Airconditioning and wifi work well. Food and cocktails are great and the breakfast on the private veranda is a nice touch. The pool is very pleasant and there is also a Dhow sailboat owned by the Flame Tree on which you can take boat trips (at a fee). The staff are very friendly and helpful. A very relaxing experience!

Small Pension composed mostly of small Bungalow on one level very well arranged. Direct access to the beach. Dinner feet in the sand and pretty good. The location is great. We had a great time. A few small differences in service level but nothing very serious (lobsters ordered the day before for 9pm who served us at 7:30pm because we were seated at the table playing cards... without the children having ordered their dish) Everything is cool and easy

This is an oasis, such a lovely quiet place. The owners live onsite and work with the delightful, friendly staff to give you the most relaxing time. The rooms are very comfortable and breakfast is served on your terrace. We enjoyed all the food in the beach side restaurant after the sun had set. The dhow cruise was lovely. If you're looking for a party atmosphere with loud music, go elsewhere otherwise highly recommended

Nice location and (partly) friendly staff. Most of them seem to enjoy doing their job. The pool is lovely, and the seaside restaurant is a beautiful location.
However, the food comes incredibly slowly, even when empty, it takes on average 60+ minutes for you to receive the food. For a starter and head we sat for more than 3.5 hours. Not everything was complete. Food itself is otherwise fine, but after the first day we have always eaten elsewhere where we did not have to wait so long.
The rooms are okay, but not great. Toilet brush was very dirty, you sometimes have hot water, but often not.
All in all we had a nice stay here. However, some improvements and quality need to be worked on. Therefore 3/5.
