Detailed Reviews
Maurice and his nieces are wonderful hosts, showing us the quotidien life around town, organizing reliable guides to visit the citadel, and making sure we felt at home. Perched onteh hillside in this lush valley, with views of the Palais Sans Soucis (and occasionally, when the clouds clear, the Citadel) this is a magical place. It is perpetually half finished but don't let that put you off - there is nowhere else I would stay to visit Milot.

My visit to the ruined Sans Souci Palace abd the Citadelle was a highlight of my trip to Haiti. I was in the company of Maurice Etienne, who runs Lakou Lakay at Milot and he was an expert guide. Maurice is clearly a well-respected local figure with a deep knoweldge of the history and culture of Milot and its surrounding area. I enjoyed a magnificent lunch prepared by Maurice's wife and it was a pleasure to meet them both and learn so much more aboiut this part of Haiti.

An enchanting escape in the hills before the Sans-Souci Palace and the Citadel - with lovely hosts and excellent food. Have been several times and always warmly welcomed. Great stop to enjoy the morning serenity before taking in the history of the region. A rustic setup, electricity is patchy so expect a candle lit dinner of fresh Haitian creole dishes and a quiet evening of Prestige and Rhum on the terrace.
And if you are lucky Maurice will be in town and will join you to regale with some insights into the local history. A lovely family and always a lovely stay!

Lakou Lakay has a heart of gold, providing quality in the places where it is most appreciated: services, food and information. The surrounding physical infrastructure suffers from its location in a semi-remote town in northern Haiti (for example, electricity is irregular), but if anything this made the meals and discussions with the guesthouse owner (Maurice) all the more charming. I left feeling like we had just spent an evening hosted by friends.

Wow! All I can say is that our trip to Cap Haitian would not have been the same had we not hired Mr. Maurice to be our guide. He took us to San Souci Palace (beautiful) and The Citadelle Fortress (amazing) and then we had lunch at Lakou Lakay (blown away). Everything was so perfect from the setting, to the community band who came to drum for us and Mr. Maurice spouting a wealth of information about everything Haiti. We also hired him to be our guide the following day in downtown Cap-Haitian. I would probably be happy to pay double what we paid for the whole experience. If you do nothing else in the North of Haiti, HIRE MR. MAURICE ETIENNE TO GUIDE YOU AND EAT AT HIS COMMUNITY CENTER. It will be the highlight of your trip.

+1
My second stay at Lakou Lakay after a first visit in 2015.
Same Great Room with the windows facing the courtyard the lush hills and the morning sun. Simple but comfy. Loved the sounds at night. The Village hum the playing children and later when all are asleep nature wakes up. Crickets or Cicadas and Frogs. Amazing. Even a bit hard to sleep but I Loved it. Dinner prepared by Innocente was delicious as always. Everything there is harmonious. Everyone so helpful . Rose walked into town and helped me get a Sim card for my phone . Got my dollars exchanged into haitian gourdes and helped me carry beers from the little market. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Staying at Lakou Lakay was an unforgettable experience for me. I traveled solo in Haiti to learn about its history, culture, art, and people - and learn the real story instead of what gets reported on the news. Mr. and Mrs. Etienne were the perfect ambassadors for their country and when I look back on my trip, they symbolize Haiti in my mind - warm, knowledgeable, and so welcoming. I was made to feel like a member of the family and even ate a Sunday lunch with the Etiennes. Highly recommend Maurice's tour of the citadel; very informative. He explained not only the citadel to me but also answered my myriad questions about Haiti and its culture. I will always treasure my memories of falling asleep listening to the rain, hearing music in the distance, enjoying Mrs. Etienne's delicious cooking, and feeling like I had stumbled upon the best secret a traveler could find. Simply amazing.

This hotel is very simple but very well located, in one of the most charming town in Haiti. The staff was very friendly and the food was amazing. The rooms where simple but clean, although during the night we suffered from the heat!
