Travellers' Choice
Our Team who was there from the very beginning of Yala Safari Camping was real wild life and nature lovers who were mixed with wild from childhood. We were born here and most of our childhood memories are connected with jungle experiences. The love and knowledge we gained from childhood came into live since 2003, when we started our first campsite. We could gain the reputation as one of the best safari camping providers of South Asia from the courage of ours and the continuous satisfaction thus came from our guests. Now we have 6 luxury tents and they are identified as the best campsites of Yala and the best location of Yala. We are the only campsite provider who registered with Independent Safari Association of Yala and we are the only provider in such an unique wild life habitat. Yes it is absolutely a wildlife kingdom where we are located in…. We invite you to share our experiences with wild life and nature while enjoying the best safari camping features of Sri Lanka. Yala National Park is located in the south eastern region of Sri Lanka and extends over two provinces of Hambantota district of southern province and Monaragala district in Uva province. There are 2 popular entrances to the park which are t Palatupana and Katagamuwa. Since Palatupana is always busy , we use Katagamuwa entrance. Yala National Park that consists of five blocks is the most visited and second largest national park in Sri Lanka. Though Yala spreads over an area of 1260 square kilometers, only one fifth of the area is open to the visitors. Four-fifths of the park is a strictly designated Natural Reserve. Adjoining the eastern border of the park is Kumana. The gateway to Yala National Park is Tissamaharama. The well-designed visitor center provides the information to the tourists and assigns a tracker to all incoming vehicles. Dawn and dusk bring about the best timing for Safari tours in the Yala National Park. Being located in one of the arid regions of Sri Lanka, the Climate of Ruhuna National Park is usually hot and dry. The mean annual temperature is 27 Celsius, although in the dry season the temperature could go as high as 37 Celsius. The rocky outcrops scattered over the park provides vantage points to enjoy the sprawling areas with Sri Lanka’s dry zone landscape: low scrub and woods. Still more, the southern border of the park being the south-eastern coast, the brackish lagoons and dunes enhances the distinctive charm of the Yala National Park.

We just came back from 2 days safari at this camp, it has been the most amazing experience! The camp it is a 4 hours car drive from Colombo, our transfer was organised as well by the camp and our driver and guide Mahesh was so friendly, helpful and informative. Closer to the camp site we switched to the jeep who brought us on top of the location given the rocky road. Once reached the camp we were greeted with fresh fruit juice and a warm welcome by the manager Mahesh and Ravi who took care of us and made us feel home. The view from the main unit of the camp site is breathtaking, I believe it is the only camp with a top view of the jungle and it is one of the reasons why we chose it. The sound of all the animals of the jungle is so present at all times and you are completely immersed in the nature. The misty sunrises are unbelievably beautiful, from the bridge which is extending from the unit you can really appreciate the beauty of the nature. The tents are 6 and all down the hill easily reachable with a short hike, our tent was in the middle, spacious and with all the comforts you need. It was so relaxing to open the detachable windows to let in the cool air and to sleep with the jungle sounds. The camp is all inclusive, three meals per day are provided, drinks and snacks, chef Dumi prepared delicious dinners, one evening he made for us one whole baked fish, fresh, juicy and so so good. The safari was of course the main experience of the stay, we did a full day in one zone of the park and we spotted all of the animals, including a young leopard sleeping on a branch and a male adult that crossed the road right in front of us. Elephants, monkeys, buffalos, so many birds. Achintha is the best animal spotter and guide, he drove us around tirelessly and pointed at all the wildlife we encountered. Breakfast was takeaway and we enjoyed it in the pick nick area where we were allowed to jump off the jeep, so many monkeys were trying to steal our food and it was so funny to capture the successful thefts. From 12:00 to 14:00, as per park rules, no one is allowed to drive around the park, the team set up chairs and table for us to have lunch on the riverside, Achintha even cut open a fresh sweet pineapple that we enjoyed directly from the cutting board. After the safari ended were were welcomed back to the camp with fresh lime juice and the usual warmest greeting from Ravi. The second day we did a morning game in another area of the park and once back at the camp, fresh watermelon juice and fresh fruit platter was waiting for us with an astonishing view. Everything from from start to end was absolutely perfect and we cannot recommend it enough, we hope to come back and stay longer. Thank you all for your amazing hospitality, our stay was really beyond expectations!!

This really is five star luxury in the most amazing setting. When we arrived I didn’t know what to expect. I had presumed camping and the main part would be the safari drives. However, the lunch we received was by far the best food we had all eaten during the whole of our holiday in Sri Lanka. It was luxury “glamping” rather than camping. The dinner was also exceptional, with views across the national park and dining under the stars. The safari drives were incredibly exciting and our driver seemed to know exactly where to go to see the animals. If you’re looking for a luxurious safari experience with really friendly, welcoming hosts then look nice further. I can’t wait to go back !

We just came off a 2-day trip with Yala Safari Camping. Overall it was a really great experience and in many aspects we’d rate them 5, but there were a few areas that disappointed considering the price tag. Location & facilities: Absolutely superb location in the park and the commons area on a platform overlooking the park is truly amazing! The tents were also great overall but very run down with holes in the beddings and mosquito nets. Service: Top class. Everyone from the owner to the staff at the camp and the safari drivers were very nice and super service oriented, doing everything in their power to make our stay a nice one. Cannot emphasize this enough. Special mention to Mahesh, Ravi and the gentleman in the camp that looked like a Sri Lankan Morgan Freeman :) (his name escapes me). Food: The food was a bit mixed. Generally good, especially lunch was superb, but dinner on the first night in particular was a big letdown. It did however seem like that may have been a one-off. A sentiment also shared by other guests there. Safari: The drivers did everything in their power to give us a good experience and we managed to see all the big animals we set out to. We were however a bit disappointed as the itinerary we booked said we’d get to see 4 different zones, but in the end they wound up driving us through the same few roads in zone 1 for two days straight without consulting or telling us until right before leaving for each safari. This in particular was a big letdown.

Wow. This place is amazing! We arrived to be greeted by Jake the camps resident baby deer, and Mahesh the owner with his team. The views are just as you can see on the website. We’ve travelled to some amazing places around the world and it really doesn’t get any better than this! Food was exceptional, Mahesh could not have been me attentive and welcoming and the Safari was awesome. We saw leopard, elephants, and an abundance of wildlife. My only regret is that we didn’t stay for longer! It’s not a cheap stay, but if you want an experience you won’t forget then get this booked. You won’t regret it!

There were so many properties that I was deliberating over before visiting Yala National Park and I was so happy that I selected Yala Safari Camping. The experience was unique, professional and seamless from start to finish. The hospitality (Mahesh the owner meets, greets and makes it a key part of his role to ensure you are taken care of and happy); Ravi - like a kind Dad in the camp providing lovely juices, coffees, beers, cocktails, wine; Achi the game driver was unreal!!!! How this man can see Leopards in trees at 300-500 metres away (when all of the other companies have not seen them) is beyond me!!! Finally, our Chef - he seems to work in the kitchen 24 hours a day! He is always there to cook delicious meals. Some of my favourites were his lunches - so fresh and diverse and his goal was to double my body weight!! Anyway, I saw Leopards, a 10 ft Python, Serpent Eagle (with a snake in its mouth), a black pygmy bear (I understand these are fairly rare to see) as well as the other ubiquitous animals (elephants, dear, peacock, crocodiles etc). I ended up staying another night to chill with the guys, because they became my Sri Lankan family!

This is exactly the place to experience Yala NP. The property borders the park and is a short drive to the relatively quiet Katagamuwa gate of Block 1. The view from the restaurant overlooks a see of green and is visited by birds, giant squirrel and a sweet, shy deer.
The team that runs the camp has Yala in their blood. Mahesh & Achi took us on amazing drives through the park, spotting not only leopard, but cobra, mongoose, spotted deer, game birds hidden in trees and bear tracks on the path. Ravi & Kumara saw to our comfort during our stay. And the food! Sandamali prepared incredible meals for us, including some very local flavors and Ravi overflowing our table with plates of delicious items. Show up hungry, that’s all I can say. We stayed for three nights, as we wanted every opportunity to get to know Yala. That also gave us time to include a boat safari, and visits to the Katharagama Sanctuaries and the temples at Situlpawwa. And possibly the best surprise, BREAKFAST. Early safari drives meant packed breakfast boxes, but sleeping in one morning to do a boat safari on the our last day meant we got to enjoy Sandamali’s fantastic Pittu, a first for us. Remember, you are staying in the jungle and this is a camp. Mahesh and his team have created a very comfortable experience in a place that is constantly trying to be jungle, so expect a bug guest or two while you will also enjoy the various jungle animals that wander through. A lot of work has recently been done to the place to restore the restaurant to it’s pre-pandemic state.
Don’t rush through Yala. Take your time and if you decide to stay here, you will leave having made new friends and experienced something quite magical.

I came here with my friend and at first we thought the price was very high but we soon learned it was worth every penny!! On arrival Mr Ravi greeted us with fresh juice and we took in the incredible views from the common area before freshening up for lunch. Our tent was amazing, right in amoungst the jungle. It was so clean and the air con was great. Our lunch was just beautiful, so many fresh ingredients and seafood which tasted amazing. We then went on a 3pm safari where we saw the leopard! At night we had an incredible bbq dinner under the stars which was, again, amazing. In the morning we went up to the common area to watch the sunrise then went out on a second safari where we saw lots of elephants! We were given breakfast on the safari and we ate it on a beach in the middle of the national park. The owner & Mr Ravi were so lovely and welcoming, our experience was something we will be talking about for years to come. We would love to go back ☺️
