A Maasai community run lodge, on the Il Ngwesi Group Ranch, made of local materials located on a rocky outcrop beside the Mukogodo escarpment, north west of Mount Kenya. The award winning lodge is often considered a role model for community based tourism. A great opportunity to be hosted by these forward thinking Maasai and be immersed into the Maasai culture and enjoy walks and visits to their manyattas (villages) as well as wildlife game viewing.

We came to Il Ngwesi for 3 nights on our honeymoon and absolutely loved it. It’s a magical place, located in laikipia and miles away from any other camps or lodges so you have complete seclusion, privacy and peace. It’s situated on a hill with amazing views across the laikipia and you can see the most amazing sunrises from the lodge. Our room was gorgeous - completely open with no walls on one side and the shower was open as well - it looked out to a valley and you could sometimes spot animals moving around there. We also had one of the two rooms with the “star bed” - they basically push your bed onto the veranda and you sleep under the stars which was an incredible experience. The food was really lovely (and there was loads of it) and the guides were so knowledgable about the local area. The staff were friendly and welcoming and there was a really nice pool for when it got hot during the day. They offered lots of activities including safari drives, bush walks and visits to the local community. It’s not somewhere you can see lots of big animals but there’s loads of wildlife around - we saw giraffes, pumbas, hyenas, lots of birds, dik diks, gerenucs, impalas, black foxes, mongoose and baboons! We also liked that half of the money you pay goes to the local community. We will definitely return!

I cannot recommend this wonderful place enough. My favorite parts are limited wifi and the option to bring your own for ingredients for their remarkably talented chef to prepare! Everything from the staff, accommodations, location was fantastic. This is a great place to detach, reflect and just be in peace and quiet. If you're looking for activities you can go on game drives, informative bush walks and have meals in the bush. This is truly and authentic experience with Maasai natives opening up their home and heart to welcome you to some of the best Kenya has to offer. The massages by Jackie were also exceptional and highly recommend it. Can't wait to go back! And don't forget to ask for the star bed where you can literally sleep under the stars like a queen!

Friends and I stayed here for three nights. We loved the location on a low ridge and our rooms overlooked a dry riverbed below where elephants wandered about and in the shade of the nearby trees we saw numerous giraffe, zebra and impala passing in a never ending parade. We called it Maasai TV. Only one channel, but a good one. After dark the stars were spectacular and lions roared in the distance. We enjoyed a couple of bushwalks with our great guide, Steven (Sankai), and ranger John. We met Mario and Emma, the two mellow white rhinos that live nearby. A highlight was our visit to a nearby Maasai village where we saw demonstrations of traditional hunting, fire-making and games. We also had a very low-pressure opportunity to purchase some beadwork items from the women of the village. Staying at Il Ngwesi was also special because our visit contributed to the local community's efforts to live their traditional life along side the native wildlife. Highly recommended!!!

My partner and I stayed at Il Ngwesi for 3 nights in January 2022 and what an incredible trip it was and a perfect way to finish our trip to Kenya, especially having just returned from 5 days hiking Mount Kenya! We saw a ridiculous amount of elephants, quite a few giraffes, and a rarely spotted lion. We were the only guests during the stay - when we arrived we were a bit unsure about this, partly because some company would have been nice, but also as it was a shame for the lodge and their income (especially as the lodge supports the local community). However we made the most of having the lodge to ourselves, the staff were incredibly accommodating and we were made to feel at home. We were given the Emuny room and were able to sleep out under the stars on the decking which we did for two nights. It was a little unnerving waking up in the middle of the night to the sound of lions and elephants just metres away but we quickly adjusted and were able to enjoy the sounds by the last evening! The food was always great and plentiful thanks to chef Frances (although some more traditional Kenyan food would have been welcomed and the beers could have been a touch cooler - such minor comments). Our guide Steven was so knowledgeable and it was really special driving through his village and meeting his son on the way to Lewa (where we had a day trip). Steven was also joined by Joel who was 7 months into his shadowing programme where he was training to be a guide. I also had a full body massage by Jackie which I would highly recommend! We also did a bush walk with a surprise bush breakfast, walked with the rhinos, visited a local Masai village and a number of game drives. I will be shouting about Il Ngwesi for years to come and would recommend to anyone that they visit without hesitation!

We were family of 5 stayed at Ilngwesi Eco Lodge. It was wonderful experience. The star bed with clear sky was one of the best. From Room we could see the waterhole and animals drinking water. Francis served us very nice vegetarian meals. The staff was so friendly and gave us the best service. I would say James for reservations, Patrick ,the lodge manager, Joseph, the guide , Regina and rest of the team was always there to make your stay wonderful. By staying here you are supporting the local community. I will definitely go back to Ilngwesi lodge.

The fact that this camp is community owned and operated is just so impressive: excellent food, one of a kind location, gorgeous open room with option to sleep under the stars, amazingly knowledgeable staff, just stunning all around. I’ve been on fifteen extended safaris in Kenya and this is top three. Absolutely unique was the walking safaris with our guide, breathtaking peace and quiet, and the ability to smell all the smells of nature. If you come by car its good to know only certain vehicles are allowed in - we had to get special permission for our dark red 4WD.

My experince at Il Ngwesi lodge was truly magical and amazing. We visited the lodge as part of our eco tourism project and we stayed there for 2 nights. The service was excellent, the food was delicious, all the luxurious cottages were authentic, comfortable beds and just amazing views. The best part of it was peace and quiet just you and nature. A Big thank you to James and his team for making our 3 days stay warm and welcome. I highly recommend this eco lodge that is runned and owned by the Masai community of Il Ngwesi

This place is a must for anyone going on safari in Kenya. It is worth a visit on its own or if you are staying in Lewa it would be silly to miss adding a couple nights here. Learn history of the Masai, see a community conservancy that isn't fenced in and has no other vehicles, and be treated to the most amazing views imaginable. We were picked up from our previous lodge (Elewana Kifaru House in Lewa) to make the 2 hour drive over to Il Ngwesi. Fred greeted us very warmly; he was informative and thoughtful during the bumpy ride, which was in itself pretty amazing as we passed numerous villages, villagers, herds of cattle, etc. along the way. We were so impressed with the entire staff and very much enjoyed the absolutely unrivaled views from the property, both the common spaces and our room (Number one, all the way down the hill). The outdoor shower overlooking the watering hole was a special treat. We made a short drive to the rhino conservancy for an on foot close up of one of the white rhinos in Ngwesi. Amazing. We also very much enjoyed our visit to a local manyatta - extremely educational, informative, and a real trip highlight. A special thanks to James and to Jackie who we enjoyed having dinner with during our last night. This is really such a special place - the setting, the people, the ownership and operation by the Masai. Stay here. It's a great experience that felt very unique, authentic, and important compared to the other places and people we experienced during our trip.

To stay at Il Ngwesi is one of the most memorable and fantastic experiences we have had in our many travels. Not only the place is situated far from everything, but it is so small (6 open cabins) that you develop a strong relationship with both the lodgers and fellow travellers. Il Ngwesi is owned, managed and staffed entirely by members of the Il Ngwesi Maasai community and you can feel the proud they have about this wonderful place they have built. Surrounded by a beautiful landscape, the lodge was made with all local materials which makes it fit into the environment. Meals were just right, the game drives and bush walks, a great experience. The rooms are all open with the exception of one wall (yes, I have to confess that the first night was a bit jumpy!), the bathroom also has only one semi-wall and the shower is a walkway with lots of hot water! We were given the "honeymoon" room (Emuny or Rhino), which is where Prince William stayed a few years ago, so now we have something in common :-) We saw dozens of elephants and giraffes from the balcony of our room; and many other animals while walking or driving around. They have a rhino sanctuary, with 2 white rhinos, and we were able to see them at close range (around 4 metres, no fences!). You feel absolutely save with the Maasai people! They honoured us by inviting us to one of their community villages which was a wonderful experience and the last night we all danced to the Maasai songs, a memory that will stay with us forever! Thanks to all our hosts: Jackie, James, Fred Ikoil, Sam Moloi (my adopted son!) and many others (Regina, Michael, etc. etc.). I wish you all the best and I can tell you I will never forget you!
