Many travelers are drawn to the Moana Surfrider for its excellent location right on Waikiki Beach and close to local attractions, despite occasional noise issues and room quality concerns. While the hotel's historic charm and cleanliness earn praise, opinions on the rooms are mixed, with some finding them charming and others outdated.

We spent a lovely four day weekend at the Moana surfrider - though we were there during the shoulder season - still plenty of people in the hotel and strolling through Waikiki. Great location on waikiki beach - beautiful facility with fast and efficient staff at the door and at check in. Classic, historic facility with that classic Hawaii vibe - not a modern, cookie cutter hotel. King room with balcony facing the beach - furniture and linen in good condition, not incredibly spacious but adequate - we didn't spend a lot of time in the room - so I thought it was sufficient. Marriott hotel - but no executive lounge available. Continental breakfast included for Platinum+ members - buffet breakfast costs $25 pp - worth the upgrade - fresh fruit, coffee, good selection of food to include omellette made to order. Pool and lounge chairs - definitely go early if you want a lounge chair - before 0700 - afterwhich, all have been claimed with towels marking their property. . . Overall, great location, clean and well maintained and close to plenty of restaurants, shopping and easy uber/taxi ride everywhere else. One demerit would be the lounge situation - but plenty of cool bars near by to chill

My partner and I stayed here for 5 nights, and we enjoyed our time tremendously. There were numerous positive aspects to the Moana Surfrider, and I will happily tell you about them and the things that could've improved our stay. To start off, the location of this resort couldn't have been better. It is in the heart of Waikiki and central to pretty much everything. Being able to wake up and walk right out the front of the resort to Waikiki beach was unbeatable. It was an easy walk to restaurants, tour stops, and shops. I was nervous that the location might lead to noise, but we stayed on the 14th floor and we couldn't hear anything not even neighboring rooms (and the floor was full of people). So that was a pleasant surprise. Additionally, the staff were all very kind. Especially the woman who worked at the Surfrider Cafe. I'm sorry I forget your name :(. The resort had plenty of amenities, and the live music at the beach bar featured some AMAZING singers. The food was also very good at the beach bar, we ate there a few times. Our room featured a very large bathroom that was clean and came with a bidet which was a cool plus. Lastly, there were only a few things that could've improved our stay. Not having access to the balcony in the tower was a bit of a disappointment. I wish we were given a bit more notice or a partial refund that we couldn't access it, as it was the most gorgeous view of Waikiki beach. Also, the bed linens were not very comfortable. They weren't soft and just might need to be replaced. But I am also very picky. In conclusion, the Moana Surfrider was a gorgeous property with lots to do and see. I would happily stay here again.

I recently stayed at the Westin Waikiki, and it was an absolute dream from start to finish. The moment I stepped into the lobby, I felt welcomed by the warm, professional staff who went above and beyond to make my stay memorable. My room was spacious, beautifully designed, and offered a breathtaking view of Waikiki Beach—waking up to the sound of the waves was pure bliss. The amenities really set this place apart. The pool area was pristine, with plenty of comfy lounge chairs and a friendly poolside bar that served refreshing drinks and tasty snacks. The on-site restaurants were also excellent, featuring a great range of menu options and fresh, local ingredients. After a day of exploring or lounging on the beach, I loved coming back to relax in the spa—highly recommend booking a massage! Above all, the location is unbeatable. You’re steps away from the iconic beach and within easy walking distance of top-notch dining, shopping, and nightlife. If you’re looking for a luxurious, hassle-free stay in Waikiki, the Westin absolutely delivers. I can’t wait to visit again!

This is my five time to stay in this hotel in three years I just find the front desk service always this is my first time to write a review. I have so many bad experience. Unfortunately they have the best location with the beach and you could see the arrogant on the senior managers because they know they have it so if you complain, don’t even think that they’re gonna do anything about it, this time we arrive they did not tell us that we cannot use the balcony until we show up you paid for the view and you can get on the balcony to see the ocean because they have it locked, due to one of the balconies railing fall down Last time I was there we found pills on the floor in my room. I have toddlers I asked him if he could do a massive cleaning room when we went to the pool because I was so afraid he said yes I came back two days later I found more pills on the floor Tell me they did not clean very well. If I judge them on the food and beverage only beverage staff have always been great. If I judge the hotel separately on the food and beverage I will always get them higher stars you pay the same money at the halekulani but the service is extremely extremely superior and everything from the clean up of the room, the front desk to the pool handler no comparison

We were excited to try this hotel and even checked out of our original resort early to stay here as we are both very interested in history. At check in, the desk clerk was amazing. Friendly, happy, personable and overall gave us an amazing start to our stay.
We got to our room and were a bit underwhelmed. While it was clean, it seemed a bit worn, the towels were extremely scratchy and for the price of the room, some coffeemate liquid creamers would have been nice instead of powdered packets. Even with the door closed and being on the top floor, it was very loud. No just ocean loud, but people screaming, loud music and there were the people next door. Listening to them fight was our entertainment one evening, but overall, the walls were so thin that I found myself saying “bless you” to the people next door as it sounded like they were in the room every time they sneezed. We rented an umbrella and chairs the next day. Admittedly, we did not get there to use them until later in the morning, but we were told that someone would be coming around for service. We were not asked one time in 5 hours if we needed anything. They would come to the people close to us and ask about every 30-45 minutes, but no one ver came to our chairs, so we went and got food and drinks ourselves. Admittedly, not a big deal but when you are asking for gratuity, I would assume some sort of service would be provided. Lastly, I paid $65 to valet our rental car. We went out to an excursion the next morning and upon returning, we were told “we don’t deal with that, you need to take care of that on your own.” when I told them the rental company would be picking it up in about 20 minutes, thinking that advising them ahead of time would help them out by not taking it too far away just to have to run back and get it. I said OK, even though I was confused as to why they would not take a rental car when they took it the day before. My hands were full of bags and such and when I went to put them down on the steps behind me to leave them with my daughter while I went and parked in the no parking zone I was quite rudely told to “move it NOW.” Even my daughter was shocked. In Waikiki, I would assume most of the cars in there are rental cars, but I guess not. This left us scrambling between trying to check out of the hotel and running all the way back downstairs and out of the hotel several times just to make sure they did not tow it since it was in a no parking zone. Overall, the hotel was a 3 out of 5, the customer service (overall) was a 2 out of 5, just because the check in clearly was so great! I regret not staying at our original resort or over at the Halekulani instead.

We have stayed at this formally Starwood property over the last 20+ years and previously always enjoyed the stay. This time it was a complete reversal. When this hotel became part of the Marriott collection the decay is visible and now it is all about the money. When you add their policy of “skimpflation” everything is based on nickel and dime-ing their customers. Because of problems with a collapsed balcony all the balconies are being retrofitted and the noise is endless until 3-4pm. (We were warned in advance of our stay but underestimated the level). So our oceanfront suite balcony was locked until the work is finished. But the real problem is because our suite faced the ocean we were bombarded with the hotel bar band or singers performing at our hotel and the wretched low brow outrigger hotel bands playing endless twanging music on the other side. So two different and very loud music bombarding our room day and night until 9-10pm. We both bought ear plugs to drown it out when we slept. Marriott Hawaii has cheapened its titanium benefits so that now breakfast is not included except for a pre made continental breakfast plate! I mean really? They are so worried their top FF customers might sneak food from the hot section of the breakfast buffet so you can only have a plate that they prepare for u. Tacky. A sign of things to come as their CEO announced he was going to help save their hotel brands on food costs. So anyone who travels a lot knows that means it will be at the customer’s expense. Waikiki has really lost any visit appeal and is really now geared to the SouthWest airline crowd. (More like greyhound bus crowd). We checked out after a few days and moved over to the big island to finish our holiday. We won’t go back and I would no longer recommend their properties in Hawaii, especially at the highway robbery prices they are charging. If the hotel is charging me $48 a day for non existent resort benefits then they could at least give their top tier repeat customers a free breakfast.

This is one of the more affordable ocean front hotels in Waikiki (but still pricey). My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights in early February. Previously, we had stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village (Ali Tower) the 3 other times we visited Waikiki. I rate our stay at the Moana as a C+ or B- grade. Here are the pros and cons supporting this grade:
Pros: 1) Right in the middle of the main shopping district in Waikiki with lots of shopping and restaurants within easy walking distance. If you want to be in the middle of all the action, this is a good location; 2) Diamond Tower rooms have a spectacular view of the ocean; 3) Daily housekeeping is provided; 4) Very clean and well-maintained lobby and common areas; 5) Energetic outdoor bar area with nightly live music; 5) Decent sized sandy beach area; 6) I was able to extend my checkout time with no difficulty.
Cons: 1) High daily resort fees (ours was $49 per day) justified with a short list of benefits that I could care less about; 2) Diamond Tower room was small and the bathroom was so tiny only one person had enough space to use it at the same time; 3) small and very limited pool area with no restrictive standards regarding saving pool chairs; 4) costly umbrella rentals for the beach (not included in resort fees); 5) the Beach House restaurant (this used to be one of our favorite Waikiki restaurants but this time, it was notably worse - the menu changed to a set priced 4 or 5 course dinner vs ala carte, and service was inconsistent and less professional; likely won’t eat there again; 6) Diamond Tower rooms are right above the main entertainment event court area. During our stay, there were two weddings in this court area that lasted throughout the night. As a result, depending on your own noise tolerance, these rooms can be impacted by these events held in this space.
We don’t plan to return to the Moana Surfrider the next time we visit Waikiki.

The Westin Moana Surfrider is located in the heart of Waikiki, and being a large hotel, you should be prepared for a stay with many people in all areas and noisy nights. On the other hand, the surrounding area is full of shops and restaurants.
The main hotel is expensive, old, and the windows don't open for security reasons. The rooms are very small. However, it's recommended to spend more money and stay in the two adjacent towers where the residences are more modern and spacious.
The dining options within the hotel are expensive. A soft drink costs 4 dollars, while you can buy it at the neighboring store for 1.50.
The parking is very expensive, costing 55 dollars per day, and it takes between 20 and 30 minutes to get your car after requesting it.
Lastly, the beach... The Westin charges a mandatory "Resort Fee" of 42 dollars, but with that payment, you get access to towels. If you want chairs and umbrellas, you have to pay an additional 85 dollars and reserve them two days in advance. There are complimentary chairs for Bonvoy Platinum or Titanium members, but they are very few, and only a few privileged individuals can access them. The beach in front of the hotel is very rocky and crowded.
In summary, you have to budget around 600 dollars per night per room. Too expensive for a hotel that is so old and lacks privacy.

Definitely the most beautiful hotel grounds I saw on my whole trip, and I was lucky enough to stay there! The main lobby is beautiful, front entrance is stunning and central, and the back patio was breathtakingly perfect every time I looked outside. The Beach Bar (which had great food/service), with its 100yr old banyan tree, had a lovely atmosphere, night or day, and it's just one step from the beach -- though it's a smaller section of the beach, this section is great for swimming, is less crowded, and has fun activities to do for an extra cost like boat trips and surf rentals.
The rooms in the Bayan Tower where I stayed were less than stunning. Just a little bit dirty and outdated, but they completely get the job done and work well if you're planning on adventuring out rather than staying in the room and relaxing. All balconies in that wing are also closed at the moment :/. Other cons I can think of are that there isn't really an affordable sit down dinner option here and the pool closed at 6pm + there's no hot tub. Also, the historical tour ended up running 30min-1hr over what is listed which made us quite late to our next booked activity.
Tips: #1 No need to buy or bring inflatable floaties because the beach often had many leftover by nighttime that were free to take for your trip. Also, the hotel pool desk sometimes had floaties/chairs/umbrellas that people had willingly donated which were also free. #2 I believe all of the hotel activities were completely free and included with your stay, so in the weeks prior or as soon as you get there, book as many as you can! We did lei making, morning yoga, and the historical tour (the Moana is the oldest hotel in Waikiki). There was also a sunrise ceremony, ukelele lessons, and a kids storytelling, though the first two were completely booked a couple days in advance. #3 For $5 per person, per day, you can ride the Waikiki Trolley pink line up and down Waikiki, all the way to the Ala Moana shopping center. Great way to see the city and very affordable transportation. Stops running around 7pm-8pm and also has rates for multi-day tickets. #4 We had a secret discount for the Bishop Museum (also highly recommend though it's further) as hotel guests. No one told us about this but it made our 3-person ticket go from $109 to $35 total! So useful. #5 Take the first elevator you see in the lobby to the 6th floor and go to the balconies on either side for a scenic view of the beach!

Having traveled to several different hotels in various cities and countries, the Moana Surfrider is the only hotel in which my wife and I unanimously agreed we had stayed in the best possible place. Among hotels in Waikiki, you can’t beat the Moana’s ambiance, amenities, and above all LOCATION. Seriously, one cannot overstate the importance of having the ability to conveniently walk between your room and the beach in just a matter of steps.
The hotel proudly wears its history on its sleeve which gives it a unique atmosphere, however, the rooms and public spaces are still well-kept, comfortable, and in no way felt tired or run down. The staff somehow manages to keep the grounds spotless despite lots of traffic flowing through the lobby at all times.
We often opted for more authentic food offerings around the island—with that being said, the food and drinks we had on-site were good, if a bit on the pricey side. The resort fee is also hefty but par for the course for hotels in this type of city; it also includes serviceable WiFi which is a nice touch. The room rate was incredibly fair for our stay in early May.
Service was fantastic throughout, especially at valet/the bell stand. Live musicians in the lobby lounge and Beach Bar each night were also impressive.
The only downside was noise—we were prepared for noise coming from the Beach Bar musicians/entertainers on Kalakaua Ave, but there was also the occasional issue hearing sounds from upstairs and the hallways pretty clearly. Nevertheless, we never had any issues staying asleep through the night.
Overall, we can’t recommend the Moana Surfrider enough. This is the only place I can guarantee I’d return to if every returning to Oahu.

Best thing is to call the hotel directly. They may have a local email address through the concierge or manager. Depends on what you need to find out or arrange.
Hi
They charge for every little thing. I don’t mind to pay as long as I get the service I am paying for. I travel a lot and unfortunately my experience at this hotel was beyond disappointing.
Maybe try to find some other fun activities for your daughter’s 16th bday in Hawaii. Food is very average too at this hotel and I didn’t like their breakfast buffet.
Good luck!
They are in the historic portion and can overlook the newer towers, the ocean or the street in front. I prefer staying in the historic building, it is beautiful but the rooms are smaller than that of the newer towers. For 2 I would prefer the banyan rooms.
There are more places to choose from in the Honolulu area.
