The Richardson Hotel garners praise for its cleanliness and sophisticated ambiance, with many guests appreciating the well-maintained rooms and the building's architectural beauty. While the renovated rooms are a hit for their spaciousness and modern touches, some visitors have had less than ideal experiences with room size inconsistencies and occasional pest sightings. The service quality appears to be a mixed bag, receiving both commendations for attentiveness and critiques for occasional lapses. Travelers also note the hotel's amenities fall short of expectations, pointing to limited dining options and furnishing issues. Moreover, the value proposition of The Richardson Hotel is questioned by guests who feel the high prices are not fully justified.

We booked a 2 night stay at the Richardson Hotel to witness the total eclipse spectacular. Although the eclipse itself was indeed spectacular, I have to say it’s not a word I would use to describe our experience at the hotel. However, driving up to the hotel building does have a certain wow factor, with its impressive exterior that carries on with the interior once you enter the hotel itself. So , so far so good , however this is where the positives end and the overall performance of the hotel management comes into question. We arrived at a somewhat small checkin desk that was unmanned , we waited patiently for several minutes but still no one came. There was however two staff members stood very close at the entrance to the bar/ restaurant door, where brunch was being served. Eventually one of the staff members came over to us and explained that someone would be with us soon. By now a significant line had formed and you could feel the tension in the air. A short while after there was a sigh of relief as the front desk attendant appeared. With no apology forthcoming we started the check in process. We were then informed that our rooms would not be ready until 4 pm , no major issues we thought , we would just pop to the hotel bar for a couple of drinks and relax whilst we waited . Unfortunately our hopes of having some refreshments at the bar were quickly dashed as the bar did not open on a Sunday after 1.00 pm , or indeed on a Monday and Tuesday . This turned out to be the biggest disappointment of all. We could not understand why , when the hotel is full with guests, here to enjoy the eclipse the following day , they did not have a hotel bar open . The hotel policy is to close the bar and restaurant on Sunday,Monday and
Tuesday. This clearly needs addressing as this is just not acceptable. We were given a list of places we could go to get a drink and food, all were a good walk away from the hotel. The staff overall were friendly and accommodating.I do feel however there should be some kind of management training where they could enhance their customer service skills to a more professional standard. A staff uniform would also provide an overall look of quality and professionalism, something that was lacking throughout. The breakfast experience was also disappointing. A continental breakfast was the only one on offer with pre packaged items placed out with no real inspiration or quality. Disappointing to say the least , so much so we decided to venture out ( again !) to have our breakfast. Overall this has not been a favourable experience which is reflected in my review, it’s a fantastic building with so much potential, the rooms are clean , well designed and comfortable. High ceilings and period features throughout, the hotel really is unique but it’s easy to see its lacking in operational experience, being such a new hotel. I feel it needs some major changes to the inner workings of the hotel management and training of its employees. Would I return? Maybe, but definitely not on a Sunday !

My husband and I booked three nights at the Richardson Hotel from April 7th - 10th (to view the eclipse). We booked a junior suite months in advance to ensure a "nice room". Instead, our junior suite was an ordinary room with a hotel fridge and a microwave, AND NO closets or drawers. We had to live out of our suitcases for 3 days! The housekeeping staff said it was the worst room on the floor and we should complain. We did complain about it numerous times, since we paid a premium price for a junior suite, but the hotel staff had no response to our complaints. We very much enjoyed the hotel and the grounds. However, our room did not even come close to being a suite, but definitely had a "suite price tag".

The rooms were very modern- similar to any chain hotel, which was not expected. There was much more personality in the public spaces though. The bed was very comfortable. It would have helped if they included a portfolio in the room with info on the hotel and a map. Note for travelers- there is no mini fridge and no room service. The "made to order" breakfast is a coffee counter with bagels etc., not a sit-down restaurant with omelets. The restaurant in the evening was expensive but the food was very good. They don't charge to the room, so bring your wallet. The restaurant is not open on Sundays so plan ahead. I was not able to book the tour they offer. It must be interesting. However one could stay at a cheaper hotel and still sign up for the tour. For the price I expected a 4 star experience, but this is a 3.

Albeit a small room, at 249.00/night, we expected a chair to read by or to watch tv, a refrigerator, and sop in the shower soap container! The breakfast was an embarrassment. The room was small, no refrigerated items (e.g. yogurt), and no waffle iron or warmed eggs, potatoes, etc. In all honesty have never seen a breakfast so ...unworthy, let alone for a first class hotel.

Dinner was at best OK. Drinks and entree arrived at the same time - not conducive to environment. Yes, menu made relatively clear that entees were stand alone dishes - no 'dinners' (i.e. no veggies!), but not bread with a pasta dish!

Yes - clean, airy, and architeturally a wonder.

Would not return!

The architecture of the hotel is magnificent! We were upgraded to a lovely suite - bedroom and bathroom on one level and a complete living room six steps up, with very high ceilings and interesting lights. This is one of the few hotels I’ve stayed in that had adequate plugs for devices and good lighting. The walls are so thick that I didn’t even hear a thunderstorm during the night. The public areas are even more beautiful. The vintage and contemporary photos of Buffalo are the best tourist promotion for the city that I have ever seen. The hallways are as wide as many rooms with interesting ancient-looking doors and crannies.

The area is great for walking just across the street from two art museums and the Olmsted-designed Delaware Park. It’s also within walking distance of coffee shops and other independently owned businesses.

There were a few glitches with the hotel, however. Internet service cut out a few times. The hotel (built as an asylum in the 1870’s) is huge with multiple interconnected buildings, locked doors in odd places, curved hallways. But signage inside the hotel is terrible! It took us a while to even figure out how to get to the lobby. And I think the shower door was installed on the wrong side. When the shower was on with the shower door closed, water formed a lake on the bathroom floor.

My wife and I traveled to Buffalo for my aunt’s 90th birthday we made reservations at the Richardson Hotel ( 400 Forest Ave) the old mental hospital. After traveling all day we arrived on June 26 2024 to a room with an air conditioner that did not work the window in our room did not open the temperature in our room was over 80 degrees, We complained and requested a different room, we were told no other room was available but that they could provide us with a fan which they did, we both had a miserable nights sleep, the next morning I was going to take a shower and noticed tooth paste on the bottom of the tub, apparently the guest before brushed his or her teeth in the bathtub. But at any rate the bathtub was not cleaned. We complained and then checked out we went to another hotel. If any of my friends or relatives are traveling to Buffalo we don’t recommend this hotel. Stay somewhere else..

We recently visited the hotel for the weekend. The hotel is a beautifully recently renovated historic building and it looks gorgeous. The issue is the staff and food. The front desk staff are aloof and unfriendly, both at arrival and departure. A 2 star hotel trying to be a 4 star. No welcome, no how was your stay, on the phone, etc.
We had drinks at the bar and ate in the restaurant both of which we would not do again. The bar was small and about half full when we arrived during happy hour. Bar tender looked past us several times before I had to approach the bar for service. Drinks were good, but over priced and no happy hour discount was provided, table water was warm and service just not consistent.
We then had dinner in the dinning room. It is a Italian restaurant trying to be high end and failing miserably. Again, not busy, but service was slow, dirty dishes left on the table between courses, and no follow up. Portion size was very disappointed, one pasta dish wasn less than 1/2 cup of food for 25$ No bread, or water refills. An no espresso machine at an Italian restaurant. Charging the white table cloth prices requires white table cloth service and this was definelty not at that level. A new hotel that needs a lot of staffing training and Food and Beverage upgrade.

Pros- Very clean, historic and nice building.

Cons- Booked a King bed room for my wife and I a month prior for our anniversary. Showed up to the hotel to be told they were overbooked and a King room was not available. Some communication would have been nice prior so we can find an alternative option. But no. My information was on file. The point of the king bed was for my wife and I to share a bed. Anyways we were offered a lesser room (instead of an upgrade) with two full size beds and told our stay would be discounted for the inconvenience when we checked out. She said she would put a note on our account. We reluctantly took it as it was getting later in the afternoon and we had dinner reservations and no time to get another room.

The following day at checkout a different desk person said there was nothing they can do for us with a discount because we paid through a booking site (like 99% of normal people). We feel lied to and misled. I advise anyone booking at this hotel to not have any expectation of getting when you purchase. They will lie to you to appease you when you’re unhappy about the bait and switch and then they will lie to you when they say that can’t do anything to rectify the matter. There is always a solution when it comes to customer service and The Richardson Hotel failed miserably.

Aside from lack of communication on my room availability, lying, baiting and switching, not having a room fridge and being stuck with two small beds for my anniversary the hotel room was clean and nice

My first stay was a surprise from my wife for my birthday. I was amazed as we drove that this Scottish looking castle was a hotel. As we walked in I could smell the smell of excellence and from that moment every experience was smother in it. From the front desk host Ms. Alex to the guy that assisted us with the mini fridge nothing but the best service we have had. We felt like famous stars with the best accommodations with the staff. Then we were introduced to the restaurant Cucina!!!!! Man o man I am from Texas but that was the best Prime Rib I have ever had in my life. Once again Michael our server gave us an experience that will be hard to match with service. His wisdom of food and properness of conversation made us feel like we were at home. Charlie knows how to operate an establishment to the utmost elegance. They we he makes sure the staff is helpful and friendly will put this restaurant on the map as one of the premier restaurant in Buffalo...forget that New York. Bar Vaux is ran by Chris has some of the best drinks that I have never had before. Their attention to deal with the drinks and food connected with an environment of sophistication made us feel welcomed and hard to leave. 10/10 Hotel 15/10 Cucina 15/10 Bar Vaux. Best ever!

Driving onto the property, we were fascinated by the buildings and later enjoyed walking the grounds. Our room was great, service at the front desk and in the bar were great, and we enjoyed our food and drinks at the bar. Our only disappointment was that we were not able to get the continental breakfast, despite stopping down at two different times. I normally forego continental breakfasts so that I can eat at a local restaurant, but the menu looked promising and we thought we'd save a few bucks by eating at the hotel (especially given the price of our stay). The entire breakfast offering was essentially decimated between 9:00-10:00 a.m. We missed when a new frittata was brought out, and didn't see any replenishing of other items. Go early if you want a chance for breakfast!
