We were in Salem to view the Turner exhibit at the Peabody Essex Museum, so the Hawthorne Hotel seemed like a good choice. We love historic hotels and it was one block from the PEM. We were not disappointed. The lobby, staff, furnishings and breakfast were great. Our waiter, Mathew, seemed a little nervous, but was attentive, friendly and well...

Dear Jon H, Thank you for your review of the Hawthorne Hotel. The Turner & the Sea exhibition was certainly one to see at the Peabody Essex Museum. The rate for the room is way to much. The bathroom has a sewage smell , they sent someone to look at it and he sprayed aerosol scent to cover it up. The doors between the rooms don't close or lock. My son opened the sofa bed and found chewed gum under the mattress. The coffee pot had old coffee...

We enjoy staying in a bed & breakfast or a historic hotel. The Hawthorne was perfect for our stay in Salem. The service in the restaurant & tavern was great & waitstaff very efficient & friendly. Smallish room with a view out front plus a very comfy king bed. Nice amenities in bathroom. Historic equates to small in most cases...
