Our historic hotel, adjacent to the Common in Salem, MA boasts 89 rooms, including 6 suites. Ideal for business and leisure travelers to Boston and the North Shore, we offer complimentary on-site parking and are within walking distance to the MBTA train and Boston Harbor ferry. Our rooms offer local, hand-crafted Gardner Mattresses©, hypo-allergenic Beyond Down pillows, all-natural and organic Pharmacopia bath products, CubieTime alarm clocks with USB power outlets and black-out drapes. Guests can enjoy complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, complimentary coffee, tea and newspapers in the Lobby, and free use of the local YMCA. Built in 1925, the Hawthorne is a proud member of Historic Hotels of America and New England Inns & Resorts and is a certified Age-Friendly Salem business. Lobby restrooms and a number of guest rooms are handicapped accessible. Guest rooms received updates in 2018 including paint, wallpaper, drapes, headboards, bedding and decorative pillow shams that are laundered after every guest. The common areas were refreshed in 2020; our Lobby boasts new carpeting and soft furnishings. As an alternative, we also offer an adjacent guest house with four traditionally appointed bedrooms. Built in 1807 and named for local nature artist Fidelia Bridges, the structure is a fine example of Federal-period architecture featuring wide pine floors, low ceilings and historic detail. Rooms at the guest house are recommended for one to two travelers and are not handicapped accessible. Due to the unique configuration of all of our guest rooms, we do suggest speaking with a member of our Front Desk team to ensure you are booking the most appropriate room type for your needs.

I loved my stay at the Hawthorne. It's an older hotel, but they keep it meticulously clean. Rooms can be on the small side, but I was traveling alone and didn't mind. Every staff member I encountered was fantastic. They have two restaurants--Nathaniel's for breakfast and the Taverne for lunch and dinner. Food is priced a bit high, as you find in a nicer hotel. But it's consistently excellent. I ate breakfasts there, meals, and room service. All was well presented and delicious. Parking is easy to handle. The location is central. I visited Salem during the week, when the town was a little quieter, and the hotel was generally quiet.

It started off a bit confusing, however the staff were very patient and understanding. The level of professionalism is hard to find these days. Everything was clean and bright even thou our room was an older one. The restaurant was extremely busy. I sat at the bar and had wonderful service, food was good but nothing to race back for. Breakfast was great!

Moontaingur169, our hotel is coming up on it's 100th anniversary, built in 1925 as an alternative for business travelers coming to Boston. Since then, the Hawthorne has undergone numerous changes (adding bathrooms to each room; moving a house to across the street to make a parking lot for business travelers; cosmetically updating our lobby, ballroom, tavern and guest rooms; removing a gift shop then adding a gift shop!) but we still try to maintain a balance between 'old' and 'new.' We admit, this does provide some challenges, and guests need to understand some concessions need to be made (mini-fridges are only standard in our suites but are complimentary if needed; passes to the YMCA are available as we do not offer an on-site fitness center; coffee service is found in the lobby; our bathrooms are compact.) Hopefully our seasoned staff, two on-site restaurants and dedicated housekeepers made our "older style hotel" still a great choice for those looking to stay in the center of Salem.

Everything about this place was excellent! There were modern touches that complemented the historical character of the building. It was very clean, quiet, and comfortable. We were on the front of the building with a busy street, but we didn’t hear any street noise when the windows were closed. The location was perfect, very close to all the “must sees.” We were able to park when we first arrived on Tuesday and didn’t move the car until we left Salem on Friday afternoon, so we never had to worry about finding parking. All team members we encountered were friendly and helpful.

I like the Hawthorne. My first stay was almost fifty years ago. I am not interested in badmouthing them, but I feel this must be reported. On arriving at our guestroom, the room temperature was 65 degrees. It was a cold, rainy day. I set the thermostat to 75 degrees and we went out. When we returned to go to bed, the room temperature was still 65 degrees. I called the front desk for help and was told by the clerk, "There is nothing we can do." Later, responding to the Hotel's requested survey, I related how cold and uncomfortable the room was. I never even received an apology. This being the most uncomfortable night I've ever spent in a hotel, it is unlikely we will return.

Hotel is very charming. Beds and pillows are so comfortable! The rooms we stayed in was very nice. The hotel is in a great location to walk to everything and the parking was wonderful. Only downfall there is no mini fridge (can request one but they only have a limited amount) or microwave in the room. Highly recommend.

I both stayed in the hotel, attended an event, and went to the bar. The room was great. The bed was comfortable with great sheets. The hotel is historic, so the rooms are smaller and different which is charming. The bar was very nice. Good drinks and service. It was at the event that the hotel really shined. I have a food allergy and they were amazing! I have never had staff be so accommodating. The didn’t just tell me which things I could eat from the buffet, they provided alternative dishes. They acted glad to help. I felt free to enjoy my day without worrying food which was awesome.

I stayed at the Hawthorne with my husband on our 20th anniversary road trip to Massachusetts from Florida and we were looking forward to it. I could not have been more let down. The staff looked at us like we were from another planet and the front desk person was bothered that we asked to store our bags, like we were putting him out. We encountered several staff members and not one of them smiled or said hello. Very off-putting. The bed was hard as stone. I barely slept the 3 nights we were there. The room is pretty big but that doesn't matter because there is no coffee maker, refrigerator or microwave in the room. So it was a table and 1 chair taking up minimal space. Nathaniel's Restaurant was a breath of fresh air after all this...the staff was nice and attentive and there was a pianist playing throughout our meal. Aside from that, for the money we paid, we did not get the experience I was hoping for at the Hawthorne.

Ms. Clancy, We appreciate that you chose Salem, MA and the Hawthorne Hotel as your 20th anniversary destination, and agree that your experience is not one that met expectations. With seasoned hospitality staff, our team members strive to make every guest feel welcome but we missed the opportunity to display this during your stay, and for that we apologize. Our mattresses are locally crafted and are all "firm," which may not be to everyone's preference. The mattress in your particular room was new just 9 months ago. We do have pillow toppers available for guests that prefer a softer feel. Complimentary coffee is available in the lobby in the morning and throughout the day at the Tavern, and mini-fridges are also available upon request. Our front desk is happy to assist with making your stay comfortable. Again, we apologize that these needs were not properly addressed during your time with us.

Had a wonderful two night stay at the Hawthorne Hotel. It is beautiful, and I loved the historic feel with modern amenities. Our room on the 5th floor even had a peekaboo view of the harbor. The best part of our stay was interacting with all the staff. Everyone we encountered was attentive, accommodating and cheerful. Did not expect that level of service at this price point. Easy parking. Free coffee and lemonade in the lobby, and bottled water available anytime at the front desk. Rooms were immaculate. Make sure to read up on the history of the hotel. It is fascinating.
