i would not recommend IUH to solo travelers. the neighborhood does not feel safe. while not filthy, it is certainly not the cleanest. long term residents take some of the typical hostel charm away. there is a lock on the female dorm, but at times the back door stays open all night.

I got stuck in Salt Lake city for the night due to a missed flight. I called the hostel at 9 pm on a monday night and they had plenty of space for me. Patty (the manager) was very helpful and offered a ride to the airport.

I travelled for one month in the USA and during this trip I stopped in many hostels, but I can truly say that I enjoy staying for three days in the Ute Hostel. Although the Ute Hostel is small, everything was very comfortable. My room was in good condition, clean and nice as well as bathroom. The women who work...

By accident I found myself stuck in Salt Lake City and happened to end up in the Ute Hostel. I couldn't have landed in a better place. Mgmt really went out of the way in helping me. By now it is a safe and clean place and for visitors only. As with any hostel you will meet a lot of...

Interesting people; clean rooms; a nice place to spend a few days. The layout is a bit unusual, with a series of small rooms to walk through on your way from the (back) door to the bedrooms, but it's comfortable. From the outside it looks a bit sketchy, and from some of the other reviews it seems like it used...

Passing through SLC on my way west, I stopped in at the Ute hostel for a brief stay. Not as bad as the other posts here. Apparently, the hostel has been under new management since early April 2004. Current hostel mgmt also runs an adventure travel business--interesting story there. The hosts were accommodating, it was a pleasant environment, and interesting...

The hostel has become so bad that Icould not stay there any more. I stayed there three years ago and the hostel was a good place to stay. However, thise year when I went to Salt Lake and tried to stay at this hostel again. I found it just turned to a dump. The place is filthy and there were...

When I first arrived in Salt Lake City three years ago, staying at the Ute was a pleasure. I soon moved into an apartment and stayed in Salt Lake City. The management were interesting and know the areaswhere they came from. They are certainly liked by their neighbors. They have assisted their guest beyond what has been expected of them.

Bed bugs, filthy, smelly, no locks, even on the outside doors. But it's very cheap, so I suppose you get what you pay for. And they only do free pick-ups, not drop-offs.
