After our rainy walk in the Whakapapa area we decided to finish with a dinner in the Skotel Alpine Resort. The food we ordered was obviously ready before the order. We received the meal within minutes after we ordered it. So far for a nice and relaxed dinner. For desert we decided to take some time before ordering so at...

The rooms themselves are basic and probably require some TLC. However, the rooms themselves were clean, the staff were good, meals were great, and the view is spectacular. The hotel served as a base for us to do the Tongariro Crossing or other hikes in the area as we stayed there for our Topdeck tour.

this hotel is in whakapapa village which is a good base for the Tongariro Crossing and mount Ruapehu. the staff are friendly and helpful and it was very easy to arrange a shuttle service for the crossing trek. The rooms are in need of some TLC (dirty curtains) and the layout of the room is somewhat strange - shower and...

Great mountains. Decent accommodation. Cabin was fully self catering. Meals were good. We were there in summer and the heating was good. Style of the place is exposed light timers which was nice. Cooked breakfast was value for money. We appreciated our stay, our second there, and would like to stay again.

I have stayed here on 2 occasions now and would definitely go back again. Whilst driving up to the hotel the views are amazing! You are right in the heart of the National Park and it is beautiful. It is easy to find and very lovely. There is a restaurant on site and they can also book the shuttle bus for...

Stayed here as part of a Topdeck tour, and it was fantastic. Sold as a backpacker hotel, it wasn't unexpected that the rooms and bathrooms were basic and that you had to pay for wi-fi. The location and the feel of the hotel made that seem inconsequential. You could stay here solo, with friends, with family and in large groups...

We stayed in one of the chalets that sleeps 6 and has a full kitchen. The best thing about the hotel/unit was the location and the view. Our porch had full view of Mtns Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. 20 steps behind our cabin, you could see snow-capped Ruapehu. It's literally next to the start of the tracks to Taranaki Falls and...

I stayed at one of the chalets which have a fantastic view of Mt Ngauruhoe, especially in the morning and evening when it is not too cloudy. The resort is also the start of the walk to Taranaki Falls. The chalet is clean and well presented.

Alpine Resort is a typical backpacker hotel. Little old fashioned. Very tight. No place for your suitcase. Yes, there is a free outside and inside spa. Yes there is a free gym. The views could be stunning if there are no clouds. Beautiful starting point for walks. Good restaurant with Nice balcony and great views. Plus wood fire! Friendly staff.

I wish I could say something positive about this place, it was a hostel like feel with limited facilities, overpriced wifi which didn't work in all the buildings anyway. The food was ok... the rooms are basic and old with not much love. The showers would lose hot water when someone else got into the shower - The staff weren't...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time. In 1986 it underwent a major expansion with the addition of restaurant, bar and other facilities. The old part of the building became the backpacker’s wing. Skotel has maintained its friendly informal atmosphere but now provides Qualmark three star accommodation and the exciting cuisine experiences of our new dinner menu. ... more   less
