Stayed 2 nights to do Tongariro Alpine crossing. Traditional old fashioned grand hotel.Beuatiful location in National Park.Enjoyed the lounge bar with friendly staff. Room nicely appointed with comfortable bed. Not cheap but considering everything has to be brought in to a remote location very good value.

We stayed overnight for a wedding. The wedding went well, staff were all helpful and friendly. Comfy bed, warm room, beautiful outlook. Hotel is historic, and tired looking, breakfast was not great and was over priced, real coffee was not included in the breakfast price. I felt embarrassed for the overseas guests who were expecting something elegant as described on...

Poor hotel decor. Outdated. Arrogant place. Complacent about its heritage. No idea about service. Providing a welcome or offering first rate hospitality. Dubious behaviour of waiting staff. Unimaginative breakfast. Very few facilities. Avoid the bar when the guy murdering 'classics' on the piano is in situ. Rude reception staff. What a wasted opportunity. Clearly once THE place to stay, great...

This is very much a classic hotel with high levels of service and lots of public rooms/space. We had nice rooms although they were not air conditioned. One disappointing thing about the visit was that we were told on arrival that the restaurant was full. This is apparently normal, so why oh why did they not tell us when we...

Chateau Tongariro is a must for any traveller going South from Auckland to Wellington. Its location in the National Park is stunning and the traditional heritage building is special. We enjoyed the walks and the excellent dining - a shame about the tiny indoor swimming pool and the hot temperature in the 2nd floor rooms under the roof in high...

As most reviews mentioned the hotel is beautiful from the outside but nothing special inside. That'd be fine given the price, but I was up all night unable to sleep due to very thin walls. All I could hear was the opening and closing of other people's doors all night. The one good thing I have to say is that...

Tired/Dated Very poor service.I was particularly unimpressed at the inclusion of a steel bolt in my cornflakes! However I was offered a free coffee to make up for it.Checked out a day early even although I had pre paid. They could not care less. After all why bother when they have a captive audience

It ia hard to imagine a building if this size and design sitting in the middle of nowhere but there it is! It tries to replicate the splendour of 100 years ago but somehow it seems an anachronism and almost irrelevant since the type of traveller is so different today. The majority of modern day travellers will stay 1-2 nights...

We had high tea here when fog had prevented us from seeing anything on Mt Ruapehu. This 1929 hotel is very grand and ornate, a sumptuous place to spend a bleak morning, with the fire burning and a very elegant high tea, complete with cucumber and smoked salmon sandwiches. It was interesting contrasting the elegance of the surroundings with the...

Nice room, nice food, good service. really enjoyed our stay here. We came in off the track after doing the Northern Circuit and the check in staff were a bit perplexed. So if you are a sweaty tramper, possibly not the demographic they are most used to dealing with. But that's fine. My only issue is that the breakfast offering...
