We stayed at the Chateau Tongariro the nights of November 20th & 21st, 2015. The hotel is definitely of the grand old class of Victorian pleasures one finds now and then. The staff was extremely welcoming and helpful in every way. We’d stopped here hoping to see the volcanoes but the weather was cold, foggy, and rainy. We even had...

We stayed in this hotel for one night as part of our tour around the North Island for my wife's birthday. The hotel built in the late 1920's has wonderful period features and is set in truly spectacular location- inside a National Park. The room we stayed in 103 had spectacular views and the bed was comfortable, but the room...

We just loved everything about our stay, the grand public rooms with high ceilings, the pianist entertaining us in the lounge before and after dinner. We enjoyed a superb Chateaubriand for two (NZD 84) with glasses of Devil's Staircase Pinot Noir and Oyster Catcher Pinot Noir. The reception staff we found very helpful giving us information and maps for local...

The enormous building of the Chateau dominates the village of Whakapapa village and you can't miss it. It reminded us of the splendour of a bygone age with enormous drapes and heavy furniture. It was built in 1929, but we stayed in the Tongariro wing which was added in1995 and is therefore much more modern. We also had a magnificent...

The setting is really lovely, and the staff friendly. The room we had was small, pretty basic and could have used some updating, but the hotel overall is charming, especially the main sitting room for evening cocktails. The scenery and proximity to walks (and the ski resort) is worth the stay.

We visited early afternoon for a high tea. The area was not busy. We ordered and a couple of coffees arrived. Not the drinks we ordered. When our drinks arrived one was wrong. This was changed promptly. They high tea never arrived even after we checked with them twice. We left after a 50 min wait.

My wife and I booked a two night stay in one of the "villas" late November. After a long and tiring drive we arrived at check in time(3.00pm) to find that our unit had not yet been serviced. After a wait of twenty minutes the receptionist said it would be another 20-30 minutes before we could get access. She did...

It isn't the 5* hotel it used to be, more like a high 3 low 4. BUT. It is still very nice and classy Good is superb and the staff are great. The views are the best and the ambience is on the money. Well worth a weekend away as it still has a presence missing in most hotels. As...

What an amazing old hotel, absolute stunning mountain back drop, was better than expected,. We pick this hotel for our wedding anniversary and booked a package with dinner and breakfast, dinner was a 3 course menu and was beautiful the only thing we could say was that our French waitress was a little pretentious and not friendly at all, spent...

My partner and I booked in for High Tea and we weren't disappointed. The staff were attentive and as for the surroundings, well they are of a time and style when the world had class. The selection of bite size sandwiches were very well thought out with a good varied selection of sandwich fillings. The selection of small cakes were...
