North Wind Lodge was about the most isolated backpacker we've stayed in on our trip around the North Island. About 6 km drive on a gravel road, we got there around mid-day, so we could still drive up to Cape Reinga and Te Paki Dunes the same afternoon. First time I drank wine from plastic wine glasses. Pretty quiet. Beautiful...

Very nice place to stay. Isolated down a long dirt road. Close by to Ninety Mile Beach and a 1 hour drive to Cape Reinga. Small supermarket nearby. Their free WiFi comes from a nearby cell tower so is very limited, about 200 MB per day. Best to fill gas tank in Kaitaia as fuel is scarce on the way...

Strategically situated hostel to the surrounding beaches. Friendly and accommodating hosts. Felt really welcome from the day we arrived until we left the place. Spacious and clean bedroom with a semi en suite access. Depending on the car used to get there it takes about 5-7 minutes from the main road as the access is gravel road which adds to...

What an amazing hostel, lots of space with a big sitting room, a cozy snug and such a spacious kitchen. Beds very comfortable with good linens and fresh clean towels. Only a few minutes walk to the coastal footpath and then in 20 mins to perhaps the best beach in Northland. Cath, the owner provides a first class service and...

It's a beautiful place. Beaches very close and you seem to live very close to nature. The facilities are great, the kitchen's very clean and big there's actually room. The rooms are big and comfortable and affordable. Since it's down Henderson bay there's no traffic so it's nice and quiet as well. There's a nice TV-room you can sit outside,...

Canadian and Kiwi owned. With a nice living room big kitchen and garden next to the sea. Loved our 2 night stay. 2 little things. It is a wooden house so you hear all the movement/ footsteps and people walking upstairs if you're in the room under/near the stairs. And the cobwebs on the bunkbeds etc could be cleaned to....

We three Canadian women spent two nights at the North Wind Lodge and it was wonderful. The owners are incredibly helpful and cannot do enough for you. Our room was lovely, bright, and large and very clean. The bathroom and kitchen were spotless. Great place for jumping off to the north, north end of NZ. Highly recommended.

The hostel itself is obviously already a bit older but it's kept spotlessly clean by the lovely hosts. Having an ensuite bathroom in a share room was rather luxurious ;-) The walk to Henderson Bay is lovely and the close proximity to Cape Reinga is the cherry on the cake

I arrived at 9:15pm hoping they have a bed available. Unfortunatly, eventhough mainseason was over, they were full. They were waiting on some guest to return to make sure they made it back safely, such consideration! John and his wife spent over half an hour giving me maps, looking up tide times recommending me where to stay, what to do....

We stayed for just the one night after visiting cape reinga, we hadn't booked but there was space to stay. the hosts were welcoming and helpful. We were shown around and told about a nice walk along the cliffs. The room was nice and clean, the beds were all made nicely with fresh linen. The room just smelt funny though,...
