Castell Deudraeth garners praise for its spacious and comfortable rooms, though a few guests find the lack of decorative flair and air conditioning to be drawbacks. The hotel's cleanliness is consistently lauded, with particular commendation for its immaculate rooms and bathrooms, despite some opinions of a basic decor.
While the service receives mixed reviews, fluctuating from attentive to disorganized, the value of the dining options, particularly lunch deals with village access, is often highlighted as noteworthy. Amenities are generally well-received, offering a cozy stay with added perks for guests.

My husband planned a surprise visit to the castle for my birthday and I wasn’t disappointed! Upon arrival even though the weather wasn’t brilliant the castle looked fabulous. We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist who said our room was actually ready even though we were an hour early checking in. Our room was on the second floor, room 5 which was amazing. Upon entering the room we had a separate hallway with a cupboard with a hairdryer, ironing board and dressing gowns and slippers to use. Also the hotel provided two large umbrellas to use during your stay for free, with the option to purchase at the end of your visit. The dressing gowns were available to purchase too for £25 each. Then you entered the main bedroom which was huge, it had a double sofa bed and t.v area, fireplace and seats, plenty of storage space, a huge double bed at the other end of the room, , kitchen area which was behind two double doors which was an added bonus and a lovely, warm and very clean bathroom. We also had a complimentary carafe of sherry to drink and some delicious hand made shortbread. The windows in the room weren’t massive but your views were lovely into the gardens.
The receptionist told us we could use the free minibus into Portmeirion, which you just told reception when you wanted to go and it was there within 5 minutes. This was a great touch especially the weather being the way it was plus he dropped us right by the entrance of the village and you just go to the ticket office to get it back- easy!! Also you get free entry into the village if staying at the hotel.
We had a drink in the bar area in the evening which was really nice by the big open fire. The bar staff were very friendly and welcoming.
Breakfast was really good, continental to start with which you helped yourself to then you could order a fresh cooked breakfast of your choice. Staff again were very friendly.
Overall a very enjoyable birthday treat and a nice surprise. All the staff were friendly and welcoming so definitely give it a try.

As something of a Cold Feet fans, since the episode scattering Rachel’s ashes, we have always wanted to visit Port Meirion, given this stay included access to the village and wasn’t that much more than local bed and breakfasts, we thought we would give it a go, booking a two night stay.
Check in and all the COVID policies made us feel like things had been thought through and we felt that they had put visitors safety first.
Parking is a bit odd, there are lots of spaces outside, but I guess if the restaurant was busy it would have been different.
We stayed in Castell 10. While this is probably the smallest room in the castle, it was huge. Spacious enough for our family of three. Good main bed and a decent put up bed for our son. The bathroom was enormous with a good bath and separate shower. Plus there was a small sink and tea/coffee facilities with a little fridge, making the slightly earlier nights easier, with a youngish son. It was incredibly war, though, so we had all the windows open in the twin aspect room, and yet was still quiet.
We had the two course special in the restaurant when we arrived, superb! Then the breakfasts were great, lots of choice and good quality.
Access to the village was priority, so you could skip the queues, or at least they told us we could by waving our tickets they give you, it is about a ten min walk from the hotel. Though if you pop down in the evening after about 3 or 3.30 it is much nicer.
The village itself is exactly what you would expect, but worth driving over to Ynys if you get time to have a look at it across the estuary, it looks spectacular.
I am not sure I would have been happy with the queues or the price if we had been popping in for a day trip. The advantage of being a guest meant we could also use the bar in the main hotel, which was for residents only during COVID.
As residents you also get to use the outdoor heated pool. This was great fun, even if it was a little cold. Swimming in the village itself. You do have to walk down to it, which is a bit of a trek, but worth it. Towels are available at the hotel in the village at the moment.
As residents it would be good if the village was available to wander round in the evenings, but it closes at 5.30. So not a lot to do apart from admire the views and enjoy the castle gardens with a beer.
A great base for a few days away and a site to tick off the “must visit” list!
P.s. if you want to watch the Prisoner on the tv in the room, don’t sit there for 15 mins trying every button, you have to ring reception and they press play for you!!

After our planned holiday abroad was cancelled, we decided to book two breaks in the United Kingdom and our first break was to one of my favourite hotels, Castell Deudraeth in Portmeirion. We've not holidayed here for about 10 years, but it was the first place on my list to go to in this country. I decided to book the penthouse suite as it's the only bedroom in the Castell with an outside terrace with loungers and a table and chairs. The weather wasn't the best for August (necessitating the purchase of Portmeirion and Prisoner umbrellas), so we didn't actually sit on the terrace but we had a peek at the view of the estuary through the arrow slits in the battlements and it was lovely to have big opening patio doors when it was warm on our first day there. The suite is wonderful and spacious with a bedroom area and a lounge area separated by the log gas fire (which we actually lit two evenings running as it got a bit chilly and it looked lovely). A nice touch in the suite is two large floorstanding fans in the bedroom and lounge areas, which I imagine would have been needed last week during the heatwave!
All the staff are lovely and friendly at this hotel, plus they're helpful and efficient. No pretentiousness. Everything was in place social distancing wise with a one way system in operation in the brasserie and sanitised tables and cutlery. The staff wear masks but it's up to guests if they wish to. You're asked what time you'd like to dine at breakfast and evening meal so that guest timings can be spaced out and it doesn't get too crowded. Breakfast was lovely as was evening meal with a decent choice. I know a lot of places do it now, but I still loved it that you could have a glass of champagne and it was good champagne.
The garden is lovely and it's not too long a walk through the garden and down the road to the village where you're given a pass to get into the village if you're staying at the Castell. One afternoon was warm and dry so we lounged on the sunloungers by the pool area which is only for guests of Portmeirion so you're given a code to get in. The lifeguard/pool man (not sure of his proper title) was lovely too and I saw that he sanitised the loungers when people left.
We really enjoyed our stay and I wish I'd booked longer! We hope to holiday again at the Castell next year.

Friends and I returned to Castell Deudraeth for what was to be another beautiful meal! The highlight of our week long holiday in a very beautiful setting. The view from the restaurant window, overlooking the countryside to the far distance, was perfect.
I had scallops to start, followed by sea bass and a delicious pear dessert. Each course was a delight. My friends chose the pork dish which was highly recommended and was also greatly enjoyed.
This was the first week of opening post lockdown and the whole restaurant and a “happy to be back” buzz about it. Staff were keen to engage will the new normal of wearing visors, hand sanitizers and cutlery individually wrapped to ensure hygiene standards. Just what one might expect of this excellent venue.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The room was more than expected and clean. The only thing I would say is that the tiles around the bath could do with re-grouting and the cracked floor tiles replaced.
The staff are really friendly and helpful and all were wearing masks.
Tables in the dining room were separated by plastic screens between diners.
The food for breakfast and evening meals were excellent, compliments to the Chef.
It was our first time to Portmeirion and the village is really pretty and quaint and can imagine in the summer it looks even more stunning.
We would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others.

Located about a 10 minute walk from Portmeirion village this hotel is in a wonderful location overlooking nearby countryside. The room was large with amazing views as far as the estuary, it included a small kitchen area with fridge and sink. Coffee/tea was provided with biscuits and 2 bottles of water. We had a 3 course dinner included in our stay, which for us was too much food. We thought the food/service at Hotel Portmeirion was a much higher standard, although the restaurant was always busy. Some days service was excellent and others not so much, the same can be said for reception staff - there were definite differences depending on the people on shift. Also the bed was very hard/uncomfortable, which was such a shame. The gardens are kept magnificently, a big thank you to the gardeners who were always busy.

Booked lunch which includes entry to Portmeirion. The food was very good, even if the portions aren't the largest, but with three courses, the amount of food was sufficient. Service was excellent and the restaurant was very nice with plenty of light and windows looking over the garden.
At the time of visiting (July 2021), three courses were £29 (excluding drinks) and with full price entry to Portmeirion being £15, the three course lunch basically cost £14 which is an absolute bargain. With Portmeirion being so busy, the lunch took away any stress or hassle of trying to find food and if you are staying for lunch, you are able to park at the Castle and can take a short walk to the entrance of Portmeirion after lunch, or move your car to the relevant Portmerion cark park.
I would thoroughly recommend visiting.

Fabulous location, just 10 mins walk from Portmeirion. Had a 3 night stay, in a well equipped, beautiful, quiet room overlooking manicured gardens. The Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The dining room had views over the estuary.
The Brasserie meal was pleasing enough, although I was surprised that the wine list wasn’t as exhaustive as I would have expected from an hotel of that calibre. The breakfasts were up to par, although maybe the fruit in the salad could have been more varied, as could the choice of cereals. Minor issues, the cooked breakfasts were as they should be.
I was a little taken aback by the fact that the towels in the rooms were automatically changed every day. Many hotels now, with an eye to the environment ,only change them if they are left on the floor. A magnifying shaving/ makeup mirror would also have been a welcome addition. Again, minor issues.
There was a shuttle to the Village Hotel, where we booked into the restaurant for two nights. We had chosen the Taster Menu, which was an additional £25 per person. I must confess that I found it uninspiring and salt laden, as did a couple at another table who had chosen it.
We were disappointed, no feedback was asked of us, which was also odd… However, the following night, we had an excellent meal there.
I even asked if it was a different chef! Apparently not.
Overall the experience was a good one, hence the rating I gave our stay.

We booked lunch here as we were going to Portmerion in the morning and there was an offer where lunch for £23 gave free entry to Portmerion. We gave the hotel a cake as it was one of our party members birthday. How wonderful they were. A birthday card from the Castell was on the table at our arrival, the table was fantastic, the food stupendous! They turned a basic Victoria Sponge into a masterpiece and all sang happy birthday! Would definitely recommend this place for food! Can’t wait to go back and stay!

Stayed at Castle Deudraeth for 3 nights at the end of August. As always everything was welcoming and presentable with the pleasant staff on reception making it a home from home. We stayed in room 6 which was large and fulfilled all our needs. The best thing about staying here is that we do not have to worry about dogs, my wife is allergic and personally I wonder why you would want to stay somewhere after it had been used by a dog anyway.
We had dinner at the Hotel on each of the 3 evening with the complimentary drive down being as grand as ever. The hotel dinning room for us has one of the best settings in the UK and having the white table linen lifts the whole place. I did not find the food not up to the standard of our previous visits, no doubt due to the difficult times. However, the 3 ways lobster starter is not to be missed.
We shall return, many thanks.

I guess so,it is a Hotel after all...sorry for the delay in responding
Hi Catherine. We stayed in room 2 on the second floor which was a large open plan room that had a king size bed, had a cot/crib at the end of our bed and also a single bed for our 6 year old. With all this there was also a couch in the room. That gives you an idea of how spacious the open plan is.
We also had one night in the one bedroom room on a higher floor which was ok the crib and king size bed were in one room and then the single bed was a sofa bed in the lounge/TV room.
Personally I preferred the open plan room.
I hope this helps.
Answer from Portmeirion Hotel Guest Liaison
Portmeirion, United Kingdom27 contributions1 helpful voteHi Andrew, great to hear from you. Really sorry to advise that we are only able to welcome Guide Dogs and Assistance Dogs into the visitor attraction area of Portmeirion. It is a very small area where many children are able to roam around freely, roll around on lawns and splash in paddling pools. Also we have 50 cottages which form part of the hotel and tranquillity is a high priority. There are many rare species of birds and forest floor animals in the surrounding woodlands that have to be protected and surrounding Portmeirion we have 70 acres of grazing land mainly used for sheep. While none of this would be incompatible with responsibly controlled dogs we have sadly found that even a small minority of people who have no interest or regard for others or for their surroundings have forced us to uphold our Guide Dogs Only policy. Please accept my apologies on behalf of Portmeirion for this disappointment and any inconvenience thus caused.
We were married at Portmeirion it was a great day. Give them a call.
