A very nice hostel in the rural area of Maramures. The hostel is set in a very quiet garden in the middle of the town of Sighetu Marmatiei: very convenient for all local attractions and historical sites. We are close to the local transport networks and will collect from the railway or bus station. At the hostel we rent bikes and provide tours with qualified guides. Also we can offer local cuisine.

It is difficult to judge a hostel when it is November and it is totally empty. For sure my experience is not totally representative of the hostel. So I've got a bed in a shared room for 50 RON, but as it was a cold room and I was alone in the whole hostel, the owner (a local woman speaking good english) offered me to stay in a private double room for the same price. So this was a good point. The hostel was partially under renovation (upper floor) but at the ground floor, both the toilets and the showers were located so fine. On the other hand, the place was kind of dirty, hairs in the shower etc. Even if it looks fine with a good "hostel vibe" in general. In addition the garden is so nice and full of fruit and vegetables, so this is again a positive point. On the bad side, even if I was alone and getting into the hostel at 3pm after 80 kms by bike, the owner allowed me to take a hot shower only after 7pm (because that was the rule). As it was very cold outside and I was alone, I was expecting from the owner to be more flexible... So in general the attitude was not so friendly, again this is a hostel so you expect more friendliness in general, than a hotel. WiFi was not properly functioning. Another superb aspect is the location, 500m from the Central Square and 1km from the train/bus station. Overall I'd recommend it, as it's the only hostel of Sighetu and the building is nice and surrounded by the green. I'd only recommend the owner to be closer to the guests' needs.

Is a calm place. We felt almost alone in Cobwobs Hostel and the room was very confortable and luminous. Their garden is nice. The negative point is: If you need to cook not is a good option, because the kitchen is dirty and it seems abandoned. It wasn't a problem for us because in Sighetu's restaurants you can eat good and not expensive local food

I followed the recommendation of the lonely planet guide and chose cobwobs (the name is cool too). You walk into the place through a construction site dodging the big tractor. We took a couple of rooms with shared bathrooms for 100 RON each. The rooms were ok. But only one shower was working and it was one floor above. The wifi was completely useless. My iPhone didn't find it and the laptop connected but there was no actual internet access. The owner was nice but not around much.

Response from rob l, Owner at Cobwobs Hostel

Sorry about the state of the hostel the tractor is now long gone. I understand the internet has also been upgraded. The rooms actually cost 50 lei per night in the double per person and 40 lei per night in the dorms. Sadly we dont have a web site at the moment but our contact number is 0040740635673.

Stayed here beginning of August 2015 with a friend. Place is walkable from the train station, maybe 30 minutes or less. I think the hostel is nice. The dorm room is spacious and clean. There is only one person who speaks English so getting information is a bit of a challenge. Breakfast is not included but there is a kitchen for guest use. Wifi is terrible.

This is a long overdue review (I stayed there in November 2014 actually) but I felt compelled to still write something about this unique hostel. When I was there I stayed for four nights and had the entire place to myself. The owners live in the front house and the sizable back portion is set up for paying guests. Although we couldn't communicate in a common language the family was quite helpful and kind always checking to make sure I was comfortable and settled. There was a most-delightful cat on the property, who took to my lap like fish to water. It was easy to sit on the sunny staircase getting some kitty love but extremely difficult to get up, since the personable and loving cat wouldn't allow it. I'm not sure I have ever met such an affectionate cat. The hostel, or rather, house, is not too difficult to find, but it does sit back from the road a bit. I believe there was even a large sign across from the gas station pointing the way. It takes maybe 15 minutes to walk from the bus and train stations and just under to town, where you will find a plethora of restaurants, coffee shops, cafes and other shops. WIFI connection was decent and they have many barnyard animals and fruit trees growing on the property. The mister will be keen to show you the premises, if you so desire. He is quite a proud man, and rightly so. There are many signs, maps and information in English adorning the walls of the downstairs part of the two-story hostel. There is loads of info on the surrounding area, recommended places to eat and things to do.

This hostel is more like your grandma house in the countryside. If you 're looking for a peaceful and easygoing original place, but just less than 10 minutes walk from the town centre, this is the one. Clean rooms and good beds. Excellent backyard with beautiful trees. Around a klm from the train & bus station. From the family who runs the hostel, you find most of the times there the mother who speaks only Romanian and it's quite difficult to get more info on what you 're looking for. However, she is very welcome and if you 're lucky you can be offered a traditional dish of sarmale!

Arrived on the overnight train, and was very grateful to be shown to an empty dorm room for a couple of hours of needed sleep. The rooms are clean and bright. The room I was in had lockers but only the key on one of the 4 worked. There was no kitchen facilities, and I did not recieve a towel. The only common area seems to be outside where the wifi does not work, so can be that little bit harder to meet people if your not in the same dorm as them. Unfortunately this place just does not feel like a hostel, although the owner Lia, did make me feel welcome, its just missing that buzz around the place. I think that an initial welcome with an overview of the area/sights to see would have been helpful. Some info is posted downstairs in the hostel, but if you need to ask questions you have to go to the owners home. Its clean and has a good location, which is good enough for me....but is just missing something to warrant 5/5.

I arrived in Cobwobs Hostel on a tuesday night, in november. I reckon it was not the best time to visit Romania and probably not the best moment to go to Maramures. Sighetu Marmatiei is a very small city, with not many things to visit. It was raining and really cold! And so was Cobwobs Hostel. The landlady did not speak a word of english. She is very old and I only got a room by showing her I wanted to sleep. For a hostel it is quite embarassing. Even though the hostel in itself was quite nice (I had a whole dormitory for myself for the price of a single bed), the house was really cold and there was no heat. I spent the night buried under the blankets, trying not to get cold. However, I have to say I really enjoyed the quietness of the place: the house is a bit outside of the center, and they have a huge garden, and we can see the hills and the mountains behind. The view is just amazing. I ate in the basement/kitchen, a quite rustic but functional kitchen. It was not great but OK. It is the only good hostel in Sighetu Marmatiei. I recommand it because it is the only one. However, I am pretty sure it is quite different on summertime!! 11/20

We boarded the sleeper train from Bucharest to Sighet with no idea what we were going to do or where we would stay, only that we wanted to see this rustic and beautiful part of Europe before it disappeared. Luckily for us we were identified as people without a plan at the station by friendly English couple (Duncan who owns Somewhere Different in Bred) who deposited us at Cobwobs Hostel. This was a very fortunate event. The hostel is owned by the friendly English speaking Lia, who is a real delight. She made us feel really at home and the it what it feels like - as if you staying in a 'home' which we loved. Bright, clean, airy, comfy and reasonably priced the hostel is a gem. We asked Lia about where we could walk. She said would we like to see something different, 'a little wild'. We said yes indeed we did. That evening we were taken on a family outing up into the mountains to a family friends fantastic farm house where we had a party. After sleeping in the hay barn with the kids and parents and awaking with a horrendous Palinca head, we spent the next day wandering the simply stunning scenery, running into shepherds, drinking fresh milk and water from springs. This was beyond a pleasure and a treat: wonderful family, wonderfull place. Go visit now. We insist!!

The hostel itself is really well located, very central, but off just a little into an alley, so very quiet (I was a woman staying alone - the alley posed absolutely no safety worries). Clean, comfortable, spacious room. Clean, well-functioning bathroom facilities. Extremely helpful and personable owners. They went out of their way to make my stay a success. Great value for money. I can't say enough, great people, great location, great accommodations!
