The Charles Hotel garners praise for its prime location near Harvard and central Cambridge, with many guests finding the atmosphere serene and inviting, thanks to a blend of classic and modern touches. Rooms are frequently lauded for their comfort and style, though the absence of coffee makers has been a point of contention. While the cleanliness is often highlighted, some travelers question the value due to the high cost and noted issues with room service. Despite this, the professional and friendly service receives high marks for attentiveness.

Prompt in responding to my requests from quickly delivering extra room amenities I had asked for to printing out document I needed for work. Hand sanitizers throughout the property, properly social distanced tables in hotel restaurant and all staff wearing masks at all times. Highly recommend hotel.

This is a beautifully appointed, quiet hotel in the heart of Harvard Square. The rooms are spotless, spacious, and well decorated. Maids came daily (uncommon during the pandemic), which I really appreciated. Lots of space to work (with plugs!) / or hang out downstairs. Complementary WiFi felt fast, though I I wasn't using it for video calls.

It will be even better once there is room service post Covid. Noir is a great cocktail bar that I used to frequent when living in the area, and a great place for a nightcap before heading up to the room.

The Charles Hotel delivers a superior experience from beginning to end. A great location, handsome public areas and extraordinarily comfortable guestrooms — all supported by a well-trained and attentive staff
We've stayed there a dozen times and are newly impressed each time we visit. It's a wonderful place.

The location is key , but superior management does not value some guest. A guest should be valued for they may have planned a event of a lifetime . My son was highly selected to attend Harvard & I will be frequently visiting Cambridge , Boston . It is distasteful that you can call and verify extended services w/ confirmation and end up to no availability. Covid is still here & I trusted a personal service of a bicycle over public . I paid extra money for a device I did not receive. Lewis insisted I take tbe breakfast for Heidi would be the only one to do a thing further . Does Heidi know what gratitude is ?

We have stayed at this hotel many times in past few years while visiting our daughter and family in Cambridge. In April, during our stay, there were few guests but no housekeeping and no problems. Our July visit of 5 nights was not pleasant. The front desk was not on top of things and seemed to be newbies. All 5 nights the key card had been canceled and did not work, the key card did not work for many in the new security elevator system, our credit card information was misplaced and we needed to reissue it, and housekeeping rapidly cleaned our room at 4:30 ish each day. Basically, they they made the bed and replaced towels. There were no coffee pots in rooms, and we were told they were being used elsewhere. Our room was over an elevator shaft with no view. The pool and gym continue to be closed. No staff wore masks, which is a concern when our small granddaughter is not vaccinated. I realize one must be patient during the post pandemic period, but our experience was frustrating and disappointing. Pre pandemic, the Charles Hotel was The Place to Stay in Cambridge. We’ll stay elsewhere during our September visit.

Our stay at the Charles started out well, the lobby is beautiful and the room looked spacious and clean. We later discovered stains on the sheets and there is absolutely no option for coffee in the morning. We were told by the front desk to call down to Henrietta’s to see if they would bring it to the room and the woman who answered the phone was curt and rude. At least put a coffee maker in the lobby.

At this price point, I am completely floored how unimpressive this hotel is. Staff members were either rude or uninterested in assisting with anything whatsoever.

No room service which isn’t acceptable for a hotel that’s 700 per night to begin with, and when I called room service to get ice, I was rudely interrupted and was told they don’t have room service. I said “yes I know that, but you have a card in the room that states to call room service for ice.” The ice took 45 minutes to come, and when I called again to follow up, was told they sent it to another room by mistake.

No coffee machine in the room, and the complimentary coffee next to the restaurant was available starting only at 6am. We were in town for some early events and needed to leave the hotel early. I ended up Door dashing coffee, but the front desk didn’t even call me to let me know it had arrived. I would have expected that a hotel staff member would bring it up. Again, for $700 per night, there needs to be an elevated level of service.

The room was completely basic - it looked like a Courtyard by Marriott room (which is totally fine if you are paying a Courtyard by Marriott price). AC didn’t work well. We had to set the temp to 62 to even have it remotely cool down. You could hear loud footsteps in the room above. No turn down service and you have to specifically ask for your linens to be changed.

I sent a note to Kathryn Vallier, the director of operations, to voice my complaints, but got her out of office response. I then asked the front desk staff who I can contact, and was told that Kathryn doesn’t work on weekends. No offer to assist in her absence.

We then had to leave at 4:30am to catch a flight. Our scheduled Uber Black cancelled due to the early time, so I asked the front desk staff if they could call us a cab. His response? “It’s going to take a while so if I were you I would order another Uber and wait it out.” So we did that. When it took a while to come, he did end up calling a cab company to see if one could come, but I told him not to worry about it and we will would figure it out.

Literally the only thing that is great about this hotel is the location. However, I could take Uber Black cars to Harvard square from another hotel, pay half the costs, and have a much more acceptable stay.

We have been traveling a ton the last few weeks and have had some incredible stays at exactly the same price point. Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica and the Ivy in Baltimore - and both were simply phenomenal stays.

I honestly expect a refund for my stay, but my guess is no one is going to contact me to even try and rectify this situation.

We just got back from a 3- night trip to Cambridge, MA. I picked this hotel based on the proximity and walkability to the Blodgett Pool there on the Harvard athletics campus. The hotel is well kept. I compared to a number of the Marriott brand and other boutique hotels. For me, the location was key. We didn't have to rent a car as we were able to walk to the camp at the pool in about 12 minutes door to door (and thus, didn't have to pay overnight parking charge either). The check-in/lobby was quick and efficient. And because I booked via Amex Travel, they provided a little goodie bar of treats (the granola bar (made locally) was pretty delicious and was devoured by my daughter. The overall appearance of the lobby is modern, but not cold. The 'wood book' silhouettes lining the shelfs was a nice touch, and the big red couch behind the stairs leading to the restaurant was also a nice design touch. The lobby is spaced out and provide plenty of space for guests to hang out (or if they were still practicing social distance). Even in the back area, there were plenty of tables to sit and chat (as demonstrated by a large family reunion gathering that hunkered down there one afternoon). The rooms themselves are nothing mind blowing, but again, well maintained. The desk was huge. Unlike other reviews, though, the family and I were not impressed by the mattress. Wayyyyy too soft and made for some restless nights/not fully recharged the next morning. The bathroom was updated, with large tub/shower, and yes, the TV in the mirror was a neat function. Part of the Amex RSVP included daily breakfast for two at the Henrietta's table (i.e. $60 daily per room credit on breakfast). We thought the breakfast was really good. A wide range of breakfast staple dishes. The side of cranberry walnut bread was very fresh and delicious. On the evening side, on the last night, my wife and I went down to the bar on the lobby floor for a nightcap. The cocktails were priced comparably to that of the Bay Area/SF. For my 2nd drink, I ordered the Hibiki Suntory whiskey... $36. Meh!

Hotel location to Harvard Square with all its restaurant, shopping (mainly Harvard souvenirs/clothing), and to the campus itself was great. We walked around a ton even through the wicked humidity and a freak thunderstorm/downpour on Friday.

For the daily rate (approx $450/night), I thought the hotel was (very?) good, and certainly felt like the location and many of the updates to the hotel upkeep lead this pricing (plus, the fact that the demand was filled by there by water polo and soccer camps at Harvard this particular week).

Not the best value, but yes, I would certainly go back to The Charles once again in the future.

Have stayed many times in the past. This time I feel like relative to other recent hotel stays at other properties around the world, the price relative to experience was subpar. The room is small, there are no services or benefits and on a very very quiet weekend the price was simply too high to justify the great reputation and location

We had a fantastic stay at The Charles Hotel. The rooms are very spacious and the extremely comfortable bed made for a great night's sleep! Perfect location only a short walk (-5min) from both Harvard University and a Subway station, making getting around the city without a vehicle a breeze. make sure to check out Henrietta's Table while you're there, the quality of food, freshness and flavor top any hotel breakfast you'll come across. Stay here!

Call the hotel. Ask for the Concierge. They enjoy helping out of state visitors such as yourself. If busy or voicemail, leave your number. They will call back if their history is a guide. October is peak season so call soon to book.

There is a parking around the corner on the right of the main entrance for less. On Sundays I believe you can park free on the quay which is couple of minutes walking distance.
