Detailed Reviews
Lovely little island and super buildings. The residence however was a bit of a disappointment. We booked via Booking.com which did not fully explain the mode of operation of the hotel/apartment. Our upstairs studio was very nice and comfortable. However: it would be tricky if one couldnt manage stairs and long corridors.; the studio floor had been vacuumed but not washed; bed linen was provided in a sealed bag - make your own bed; at the end of the stay you have to strip your bed and take linen and towels downstairs and deposit in a frame at the side entrance; you have to take your own rubbish to the outside bins; the shower smelt of drains! Our stay was for a special birthday so not what I expected, plus the fee per night is what one might pay for a 3 star hotel, and the €11, soon to be €12 charge per night per dog is greater than we have ever paid for any hotel in France.
The staff were very helpful and pleasant
It's a pity as we would love to visit he island again - but not the residence

Welcome but disappointment on arrival in the accommodation. We expected more space and comfort. Cleaning had been done but the toilet was scaled with a brown background and above all, the wipers had not been changed and were disgusting!
There's mold in the showers. We still had a great stay. The terrace furniture is very good and the kitchen well equipped. Thanks for the helpful little Check-out Kit.
I would have liked a faster coffee maker, two bedside lamps in the bedroom and a soap rack in the showers.

The residence was a good experience. Those staying for a week or so would enjoy the flexibility of a small kitchenette. However we took the residence for three nights. Access on arrival is a problem, the reception is
only available 9am - 12 pm and 4pm to 8pm. If you arrive in the afternoon you have to wait, and after 8pm, you need to call a special telephone number. You get in to your apartment which is small but very clean, and you make your own beds. The linen is provided and towles cost an extra 7euros (for 2 people). There is no hosekeeping service during your stay, and on departure you must clean your apartment throughout.
However for the price the Ibis hotel was a little cheaper for three nights, and had all the usual hotel services such as houekeeping, towels etc and
you did not have to finish the break by cleaning the apartment. It would be ideal for those with a family for a week or so, however the product needs to be modified somewhat for the short break market.

Lovely location. Small little island with ferry access. Ferry is regular and inexpensive.
We arrived midday at the end of June finding no one in reception! Fortunately, we had emailed beforehand and had our keys left in the hall safe for us. We only knew to do this by reading Trip Advisor reviews!
Our accommodation (apartment) was nice, clean, well furnished. We asked 2 different people 3 times to have the room safe opened to put our valuables in it but concierge never showed up. So I gave up.
Clean bedding was provided at the start of each week.
The appartments we were in are in a long corridor. Unfortunately, the first night some revellers returned from a night out at 3 am making a terrible amount of noise which kept us awake. Our room overlooked the table tennis table which was occupied by noisy children from 7am til after 11pm. Many residents were complaining but their parents obviously were happy enough their kids were elsewhere. Do not take such a room. Nightmare!
The swimming pool is rather stingy but is heated and clean. However, entrance is by key only and they only provide one key so you have to make sure you don't get locked out (or in!).
There is no restaurant on site but basic breakfast can be had.
The little town is a delight. Quaint, charming, lots of shops and cafes, restaurants etc.
Lovely walks along the beach and the hills.
Overall, we did enjoy our stay here for the most part but I wouldn't return. Too many small negatives which appear large as it was our annual holiday.

Okay, this was not my first choice of accommodations, but the hubby wanted to be close to LaRochelle and this is what the browser provided that I enjoyed. I should note that the island of Ile d'Aix is not accessible to cars so you carry what you need. This apartment had a fully stocked kitchen and with the market it worked out fabulously. The hours for hotel desk are odd to say the least and we ad an hour wait upon arrival just to check in. So, double check these times, or allow it to fall you right into island time as we did.
The apartment itself was well. Equipped but a ceiling fan would have made sleeping a bit easier as the bed is in a loft and the cool air from the windows rarely made it upstairs. The stairs were a bit treacherous though and some anti skid would be good. We did not use what looked like a beautiful pool as it was always full of kids. Grounds are lovely but outside dining would be nice too.

The title says a lot. We were the kind of people making fun of others going to the same vacation place every year, until we went to Ile d'Aix. Fort de la Rade is well located, close to the 5 to 10 stores and restaurants on the island. Accommodations are clean, with the basics you may need (plates, cups, pots, silverware). Nothing fancy. If you want a 5 star place, this is not for you though.
Apartments/houses were ready when we arrived, with everything set, with enough sheets and towels. A plus for us (with 2 small children) is that the cleaning is included at the end of your stay. Of course you have to clean every day by yourself, it's not a hotel with daily service. May you have an issue the reception people are very helpful and fix the problem right away. There is a small beach within 10 minutes walk, less than 5 in bike. 2 others bigger but farther are nicer since there is less people. On the other side of the island there's a couple more but smaller and sometimes too far for small children.
The pool, with different depths is gold for children.
It's true that the reception has 'special' hours but you are in France! Once you know them make plans to arrive when they are open. If not, you can leave your baggage in the room provided and go for a walk.
The whole place is extremely calm where you feel confident to let your children go and play out of sight (mine are 5 and 7) and they played ping pong or football where I couldn't see them. I know some go to buy bread by themselves. It's safe enough to send them back to your apartment if you've forgotten something.
The first year I stayed just in front of the ping pong tables and it wasn't too noisy. There were children playing at all times (not too late) but nothing that bothered us.
In the same fort you can arrange to have some 'voile' classes with very friendly people.
They provide breakfast services (haven't tried it) and you can get bread in the same fort (ordering the night before).
I have no complains about la residence. Next year we are staying there again.
Like somebody said bring all your food, the store on the island is very expensive and with not too many choices.
If you like a calm place with no cars, limited noise (although lots of children), go here. You will really rest and relax since there is nothing else to do :)
