Detailed Reviews
The kids pool is amazing and was our favorite thing about this hotel. Wonderful view of the ocean and there is one waterslide. The slide is long but more for little kids (the heavier you weigh the slower you go!). The pool also had some fun features - a shallow sandy/pebbly area to play in and a volleyball net. We were able to get a ball from the pool desk and we had a blast playing as a group of 4. There is a separate adults only pool, which I'm sure was nice for those who don't have kids.
The rooms were clean, beds and pillows were comfy (lots of extra pillows), and bathroom very nice. The included breakfast was also pretty good (hot buffet) although the way they charge it to the room is kind of weird. Pay attention to your reservation - we didn't realize until we were there that our reservation only included 2 breakfasts per room (despite having 4 people per room). So, we ended up getting charged for the other breakfasts in our group and it was pretty expensive ($18/child; $36/adult). The system they have for keeping track of that is also really old school so they ended up messing up our bill and overcharging us. It all got figured out pretty easily at checkout. But just be sure you aren't getting double-charged for anything!
The fitness center was well-equipped. Lots of weights and several cardio machines (treadmills, ellipticals, etc.). Overall we really liked this place and thought it was great for the price. We'd definitely stay here again!

Aloha Trek29362886032, Our resort is indeed a fun and exciting wonderland for kids! It’s the perfect place for parents to unwind, relax, and enjoy a couple of Mai Tais by the pool while soaking in the sunset. We will continue to work on our systems to ensure a smoother dining process at our restaurant, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you experienced. We look forward to welcoming you and your ohana back again soon!

Came here for the Ironman Medical Conference and to relax. The conference facility was great! Clean, spacious, easy accessible and great snacks, etc.
We stayed in the Mauka wing on the 5th floor, partial ocean view facing the basketball courts. Really lovely room, with lots of space and very clean. The bed was too soft and a bit lumpy for me, but my bf said it was fine.
The shampoo/conditioner/shower gel was all slightly scented and seemed pretty high quality for a hotel, which was really appreciated.
The pools are both also lovely. There’s an adult pool with a nice waterfall and close access to the outdoor bar. Unfortunately, you can’t really see the ocean from this one. The family side, has a nice, sandy zero entry for the kiddos, two hot tubs, ocean view and a fun water slide! Even though we didn’t come with kids, I stayed on that side because it was just more fun. The staff comes by regularly to get drink/food orders, hand out pineapple, water, etc.
Highlights:
Manta viewing deck (yes, you can see them from the actual hotel)
Pool
Spacious and clean room
Perks-Farmers market, pickleball, paddle board, snorkel gear, activities (I enjoyed the yoga overlooking the bay), and public access to the bay.
Overall, would highly recommend staying at this Hawaiian owned property that appears to be upgrading little by little.

+1
This hotel is great, if you do not look at it as an all encompassing hotel. We wanted to stay close to downtown Kona but still benefit from the amenities of a resort and this was the perfect mix of the two. Room, staff and pool were the highlight of the hotel. I would recommend this hotel to others.
Pros
- Kona town is just a 15 min drive north. Check out Umekes Fish Market, Hico, Kona Brewery, Kai, On the rocks, Island Lava Java
- Magic Sands beach and Kahalu'u Beach Park is 10 min drive north
- Kealakekua and Captain Cook, which are the other spots for Coffee farms and food is 15 mins south. Absolute breathtaking views getting back to the hotel from there. Check out Shaka Tacos, Coffee Shack, Greenwell Coffee Farms (free tour), Randys Huli Chicken, Rebel Kitchen
- Volcanoes National Park from the south of the island is 1.5 hrs
- Massive pool for kids and adults including a slide, sand area and hottub
- Manta Ray viewing deck, get to the deck by 7:30-8pm before the boats start showing up and see a good number of manta rays
- Parking was a short 2 min walk from the rooms
- Friendly staff and housekeeping
Cons
- There is not much of resort activity happening during the weekends
- Food is overpriced and you can get much better options if you step outside

The hotel is severely under staffed. If you go to dinner, the restaurant is 80% empty but they can’t seat you because they have a single server. The bar staff seem to hate to work here and treat guests accordingly: they ignore you, no acknowledgement like “I’ll be right with you”, they avoid eye contact until they get to you eventually. This happened every time we were at the bar. One time when they finally got to me so I could order the fish tacos, turns out they did not have fish tacos. How can the planning at this hotel that they don’t have fish in Hawaii! In any case the food is broadly bad. The cafe staff are friendly and attentive. Some of the best rooms are in front of the pool full of screaming children until 10PM every night. The room balconies seem to amplify the sound and the room windows have zero sound proofing. Also, our premium room has an AC system that sounds like an old broken fan and the toilet runs constantly. The location of this hotel is great, it could be such a nice hotel but it seems very poorly managed. It’s as if people without any hotel experience stumbled upon an abandoned hotel (this used to be a Sheraton) and are attempting to run it.

I don’t think you’ll find a better resort anywhere on Kona. Outrigger has everything you could want on a vacation. I would live here if I could - it’s that good.
From the first few minutes when I arrived I knew I was in for an elevated experience. The staff I encountered were amazing - everyone from bellhops and custodians to the bar staff and concierge desk. I only stayed for 4 nights but many of them got to know me and greeted me by name each time I saw them and stopped what they were doing to ask me how my vacation was. If anything was less than perfect, they saw to fixing it quickly.
The room was clean and well apportioned. The bed was incredibly comfortable. The lanais and true blackout curtains really make a difference for those long nights and late mornings on vacation. I’ve stayed in many, many hotels in my life and I can say with absolute certainty that I’ve never slept as well in a hotel as I did at the Outrigger. I loved the manta ray deck too, although I didn’t get to see a ray. The sunsets from that deck are postcard worthy even on cloudy days.
My Costco package got me a discounted Voyager 47 pass even though I wasn’t in an oceanfront room. Voyager elevated a great stay to an excellent one and is very much worth the price of admission. Special shoutout to Sharlaine, Tessa, and the whole V47 crew - they were awesome. Truly class acts and assets to this wonderful resort. V47 was the icing on the cake of an excellent stay, and IMO it’s absolutely worth the price of admission if you stay around the resort and don’t fancy paying $50+ for dinner and drinks per person every night.
This was my first stay at an Outrigger resort but definitely won’t be my last. I don’t know when I’ll be back to Kona, but I know Outrigger will always be high on my list when my travels take me places they have properties. It’s just the right amount of luxury at just the right price, and I truly appreciate the team behind the place that make Outrigger what it is. Bravo.

Aloha Steven, What a wonderful review! Mahalo for taking the time to share your experience at OUTRIGGER Kona Resort and Spa. We are thrilled you had such a wonderful time, highlighted by Voyager 47 and the entire resort team. We loved staying at the Outrigger hotel. I stayed with my 5 and 7 year old for a vacation trip. We had a room with 2 double beds and a balcony that had a partial view of the ocean. It was beautiful! The staff went above and beyond. Kiara at the front desk was very helpful with our check-in process. My kids are still wearing the shells we were gifted. We spent a lot of time at the kids pool, and according to my kids, they went down the slide thousands of times. The attendants at the top of the slide were awesome and fun to talk to. They also gave great advice to come up to the top of the slide to get pictures of the sunset. (Genius advice!). The location of the hotel was great because we wanted to spend a day on the east side of the island and beaches that were north of Outrigger. The housekeeping were also very kind and helpful.

The Outrigger was fantastic! We couldn't have found a better place to better stay. The resort was beautiful, comfortable, and we felt pampered. The staff were also great. We we're always greeted with a hellos, even by staff members passing us in hallways. Among a great group of staff members, Ben stood out.
Ben in the resort restaurant gave us a warm welcome after we were seated in his section. Throughout our meal (the breakfast buffet) he regularly checked on us with small talk and drink refills. His service was also excellent. He anticipated coffee top offs, new napkins, and a to go cup before we even asked. He seemed to genuinely care about our experience. Ben's service was the perfect compliment to an excellent stay. We'll be back!

Wonderful hotel. Very nice room layout & super clean, Ac worked great. Pool was fun for the kids 7&4. Valet parking was super convenient and they helped unload/load up our stuff. 5 stars. Love this property. Theres two different pools one adult and other family with a slide. There are little walk trails that you get to see beautiful flowers and the rugged volcanic flows to walk and enjoy the scenic views. You get to walk and see the beautiful ocean but not really a beach but very relaxing. Staff were friendly and loved how the rooms had complimentary water bottles and also was provided with a sack pack and a shell lei. Highly recommended.
