Detailed Reviews
This has got to be one of the most relaxing places in Bali. Blue Star is right on the sea shore, you can sit in the cafe and have really tasty food. The room was clean and well presented. The staff are really friendly and happy to help. If you like snorkeling then you can simply walk out into the sea and see some amazing fish.
A very pleasant place to visit, I will certainly be coming back again

Pregnant lady with husband and 3yr old son spent 8 days at the Blue Star and it was possibly the best stay of my life (and we've travelled a LOT). We had a spacious seafront bungalow with 3 large beds, aircon, outdoor shower, fridge, wifi, tea and coffee brought to patio every morning. Very green surroundings, ocean on doorstep. The reef right in front of the hotel had fantastic snorkeling and easy swimming for young children, and cafe was great traditional food every time. Just a short walk up the hill to see the volcano at sunset, Noni mini mart a short walk the other direction. Best of all were the staff who treated us like VIPs every day, super friendly and helpful, organising taxis, day trips, changing money in town at late notice, jetting off to buy yoghurt for smoothies, personalised massages in the room, and sunset dinner on beach with a fire and a surprise cake for our anniversary! Iluh, Darmi, Emi, taxi Agus and all the whole team were amazing and like family, thank you so much! I'm telling all my family and friends to come stay here, and really hope to come back some day soon!

We stayed at 4 different locations during our Balivacation and this was our favourite one. The staff is really lovely, Darmi and her crew is so warm and welcoming, attentive and make you feel at home right away. They offered us their last room and adjusted it with extra mattresses for the kids, which worked perfect. Excellent location by the sea, calm water where you could both swim and snorkel with children. We had breakfast and lunch every day at the restaurant and were pleased with the meals. The beautiful surroundings, friendly spirit and nice atmosphere did it all. You could easily come here by yourself, relax and feel surrounded by friends. Dinner at Joli best view cafe is recommended at night. Many thanks for a fantastic visit!!

Great setting overlooking Jemeluk with both tables and chairs and also beach chairs. The menu has just been updated and offers a large variety of local and western dishes. Highly recommended are the cappuccinos, the turmeric drink (Jamu Kunjit), the calamari and the satay lilit. Staff are obliging and friendly. The only caution is the line of slippery tiles in the dining area, especially with wet feet. Recommended restaurant.

+1
We booked Blue Star for the snorkelling location, were not disappointed it’s right out front just a few steps.
Had ocean view room, simple clean and comfortable. Love the coffee delivery on patio every morning. Addicted to pineapple pancakes for breakfast. Every meal we had was good.
Walk out to beach early morning turn left head around the point and you will see Agung in full glory. In the evening head up the hill behind Blue Star to Joli Best View for lovely sunset with a cold beer.
The staff are lovely.
Special thanks to Darmi and Iluh for making our stay so welcoming.
If you have time add Lahangan Sweet to your stay, either sunrise or sunset it’s well worth it.
Have not left Blue Star yet but already talking about “next time”

We enjoy a 3 night stay at the hotel, the cafe provided great meals customer service was amazing by staff. Rooms large with basic amenities, had a bar fridge but no kettle. Each morning hot water thermos with tea and coffee provided. Basically walk out of your rooms to the cafe and onto the beach which had well shaded sun beds.
We look forward to returning in the hotel in the future

It is the best location on the beach but the accommodation reflects the price. I'm not complaining about it. It was fine The staff are very nice. The food is typical of a lot hotels. Just OK. We ate elsewhere but not always which meant the owner lost out. The owner needs to train the cook in excellence and then I would eat there every night. Best menu, best chef, more money.

A gem of a place to base yourself if you want to be able to walk in right off the beach to snorkel in the best part of the bay, like I did, while being close to some nice restaurants with great sunset views further up the hill. Room was simple yet cheerful with fantastic views of the water, bonus to have a nice little cafe attached and lovely staff. This all helped to make my stay in Amed everything I hoped it to be, thanks Blue Star!

Blue Star cafe & Bungalows- review
My partner & I stayed at Blue Star (our 1st time in Bali) for a week, towards the end of August, also at the end of 3 weeks of holidaying in Bali. We specifically staged it so that the last leg of our trip was in a quiet place, so we could relax before returning to work, and did not want large crowds, busy streets and touts, so we chose Amed. After reading many positive reviews, we chose Blue Star.
Communication with Iluh via email prior to the booking was excellent, especially considering the time difference, and we also spoke on the phone to make some special requests, which she arranged.
Or welcome was very warm and genuine, and the requests we had made were in place. After more than two weeks, mostly in larger centres, like Sanur & Ubud, we were more than ready for some peace & quiet, which Amed & Blue Star delivered.
The bungalow and cottages are not fancy, but are very clean, secure and well maintained. We stayed upstairs, and had incredible views of the sea through our double doors, and could hear the waves at night, and even sleep with the doors open.
The location is so convenient, as you are on a beach which is part of a cove, with only one other cafe/hotel at before the end of the cove, resulting in lower foot traffic on the beach.
If you walk in the opposite direction, you will find a range of warungs (local eateries) with fresh seafood daily at very reasonable prices, e.g.£2 or 30000 Indonesian rupiah for a dish of grilled tuna and vegetables. We frequently ate at Blue Star, mainly because it was so convenient. We walked downstairs, and about 5 metres away you have the restaurant- where there was an inclusive breakfast of tea/coffee, a range of pancakes and fruit salad+ extras at an additional cost. The food in the area is similar in price, and standards can vary, but is generally good in Amed. We loved the banana and coconut pancakes, the Balinese fish, the various lassis and fresh fruit juices. If you like something in a particular way- communicate it to the staff and they do the best they can to meet your needs.
You step out of the restaurant straight onto the beach, and a few metres further on and you are in the water. The tide does not range too much, but the stunning coral reefs were best seen at high tide in the morning during our stay. Currents are very mild, so it's fairly safe, and the snorkelling is absolutely stunning. You have this incredible range of sealife, in 3D, right on your doorstep, and you can rent snorkelling equipment for £2/ day or 30000 rupiah. Despite having seen it before, we would snorkel almost every day- its easy, if you haven't done it before, and like stepping into completely different world. Highly recommended!
I would like to respond to Cindy L's review, which differed from our experience. Our perceptions may be influenced by our expectations, and like Cindy L, we experienced roosters crowing, but this took place across Bali, forms part of the lifestyle & culture of the Balinese people, even in urban centres- it woke my partner up in Ubud initially, but in Amed, she was fine- possibly because she had adapted by then.
There was no construction going on during our stay, and there was certainly no machinery, especially chainsaw sounding equipment. The jukung, Balinese boats go fishing early in the morning, using wind power, and on their return may use an outboard motor, but this was not loud or disturbing in our experience.
On occasion, there were people selling items like jewellery and sunglasses on the beach, but they were the least aggressive we experienced in Bali, and after 2 no thank you's , or 'I already have sunglasses', they smile and move on. What some visitors may find uncomfortable, is that the vendors may stay in the vicinity after offering you something- not to pressure you into buying, but possibly because it's a public beach and they enjoy it's beauty too. I think there may be cultural differences regarding understandings of personal space at play here...as many Balinese may ask you questions at your first meeting, which Westerners may consider personal. There are also the occasional tout who asks questions to find out if you are a possible customer, but this occurs across Bali, and in Amed we experienced this at its least invasive. However, if Amed is the only place you've visited in Bali, you may have a different perception.
During our stay, we also went on the morning fishing trip with Nengah, Iluh's husband, leaving about 5.30am. This was a truly beautiful, peaceful, almost mystical experience, and helped me to understand why fisherman may be very spiritual- the quiet, and contact with nature in its beauty and strength was awe inspiring-we hardly said a word during the 2 hour trip- unfortunately, no fish.
During our stay be also went scuba diving with Jukung Dive @ the famous Liberty wreck, & trekking up the mountain to visit a family living in the mountains with a member of staff, and to enjoy the wonderful views- all arranged via BlueStar. There are also massages available on the beach for 50000 rupiah/50 minutes- about £3.40. The sun loungers are free, but be sure to reserve them by placing your towels on them in the morning.
We did not want to leave at the end of our stay. It was quite sad. We felt at home, and very comfortable. If we had questions or queries or concerns, we communicated this to Iluh and her staff, and these were received very positively and acted upon very quickly and effectively.
Also, you need to consider the value you receive for your stay-we paid 350000 rupiah (£23)/ night for a room for 2 people, right on the beach, with a fantastic view. It's not a hotel, so adjust your expectations accordingly, but what you have is genuine Balinese hospitality, very helpful & friendly staff who appear to enjoy their work-Iluh & her husband Nengah, who go out of their way to make you feel comfortable, and a very small number of guests with whom you share the space.
I can fully understand why many of the guests return year after year - and we are considering returning ourselves.
A very warm thank you to Iluh, Nengah & their friendly staff for a most enjoyable stay.

Almost all have inside bathrooms, and a thermos of tea or hot water will be brought for free whenever you want.
Snorkelling right at the front, only few foot steps away. Beautiful corals too, and look for the temple they have underwater.
