Our train arrived to Alleppey at 2:30am which is not ideal, but Jose made it all very easy as he had organized for a very nice rickshaw driver, Aneesh, to pick us up and show us our room. The room and bathroom were sparkling clean and very comfortable and we loved hanging out on the balcony and watching dragonflies and butterflies fly by. We also had an excellent breakfast and dinner here. Jose also organized our canoe trip of the backwaters for us through his Kalappura Tour company - we had a great time with our guide, Ani. Jose was always available to answer our questions in person and via whatsapp, from writing down directions to the homestay in the local language so we could show rickshaw drivers to helping us figure out the bus to our next destination. We highly recommend both a stay at Kalappura guesthouse and a boat tour with Kalappura tours!

We came to the homestay spontaneously and Jose welcomed us friendly and warm. We slept in two well air-conditioned double rooms, had very delicious dinner and breakfast and made a one day trip with the houseboat which Jose organized for us. Thanks for everything! :)

Kalappura is a rare homestay; it's Quality in every respect. I happened on this place by accident and I found it an oasis of calmness, tranquillity, friendliness and happiness. Located just a km from the main market and central bus station, Kalappura is a convenient location for travellers to spend some time. Jose, the host, is genuine and meticulous about meeting the requirements of all his guests. Despite his hectic business and family life he manages to find the time to know each guest and goes beyond his duty to make everyone feel special. However I have to warn you that leaving Kalappura might be tear jerking; I hated saying goodbye after what I know cannot be reciprocated during the rest of my travels.

After traveling 3 weeks in India, I can say this is the most comftable place I stayed. The house is really cute and spotless, it has a garden and is located in a nice residential area ( 5-10 min walk from center and from backwater ferry station).

Joss was a very attentive host. He helped us organize our trip to the backwaters and recommended many restaurant options. He even showed me the waste management system in the city after telling him I was working in this field. His knowledge of sustainability is impressive and he makes sure to recycle as much as possible at his homestay.

Room was very clean, with mosquito mesh. Water , towels and soap was available.

Would definitely come back when in Allepey!

Thanks so much Joss

The homestay feels like a cosy, welcoming home like our own. Jose, host of Kalappura is professional and thoughtful. Upon arrival he sends a text with places to eat around, and coordinates of the homestay to show locals/tuktuk drivers if we get lost. Jose invited me to join him on his daily routine to the night market for fresh food purchase for tomorrow’s meal at the homestay and his houseboats. It was a local experience that nobody else can offer. An absolute privilege and delight. I enjoyed my time there playing with his children Annie, Angel and Andrew. The homestay is a cool respite in hot hot Kerala, and the shower in my room was cold for the night but it is okay for me.

Best part was the houseboat overnight stay Jose organised for me on a last minute’s request. His boat is large and spacious. The bed is king size and luxurious, and shower’s hot. Food served on board has fresh caught fish, and the boatsmen are sweet. He checks once in a while via text to make sure all’s well. Extremely thoughtful experience. Felt like it came from the heart, and I feel like family.

THE FOOOOOOOOOD. Holy crap best food we had in all India and usually I prefer North Indian cuisine but this was some Michelin level stuff! We dared to pick the meats and fish, as westerners we are always sceptic but all were extremely fresh.
We did a nice sightseeing of some different locations, the staff was very kind and happy to point out nice facts and details about the surroundings.
In the evening/night we had a massive thunder storm but everything was very much dry and chill on board (which is not always the case on houseboats), this one at least seemed well maintained.
1h canoo ride was included which was very nice in discovering a small canal not possible with the big boats.

My friend and I had a great stay with Jose. We booked one night on arrival in Alleppey from Kochi. Unfortunately we got on the wrong train and so arrived later than we would have liked. We managed to message Jose and asked if he had any recommendations for dinner. When we arrived, we were scooted on the back of his scooter to a nearby restaurant to ensure we arrived before last orders at 8:30pm. After dinner, we picked his brain and he was happy to help us organise the rest of our trip in Kerala.

Jose is obviously very knowledgeable about the area and he can arrange kayaking and houseboat stays on the backwaters which certainly takes the stress out of trying to find and negotiate one for yourself.

The room was clean and had air conditioning and mosquito nets. Jose also provides breakfast in the morning if requested, as well as bottled water and beer with a small and reasonable mark-up.

I would highly recommend this homestay if you are in the area.

Had an amazing time at Kalappura homestay. The owner Jose and his family are friendly and accommodating. They are very knowledgeable of the best in the area as they have grown up there.

Jose went above and beyond helping me with an early morning rickshaw to a kayaking tour to making sure I returned home safely at night.

The food they served at the house was home cooked and delicious. As well, the room and bathroom were clean and functional. Wifi was also very fast and Laundry service was prompt and affordable.

The thing I appreciated most was how inviting they were. I had great conversations with Jose and his cousin Mooni where they shared a lot about their lives and their culture.

I would highly recommend!

Jose’ home stay was just perfect. Long travel and arrived to a choice of good to great large rooms all with option of aircon. Super clean, comfortable and local home cooking to die for.
We stayed one night, then Jose organised the rest. Great places to eat, found us an epic little coffee shop on the canal, organised all our tours from local water taxis to canoe trips in the backwaters to an epic coupla nights on one of his house boats.
Jose will look after you until he can’t anymore and you are leaving with the biggest smile ever. This seems to be his mission. We will be back.

I was recently at Kalappura Homestay last week with my cousins. It was truly one of the best experiences I ever had in hospitality. Jose was so nice and accomidating and truly made us feel at home. We were able to take a personalized cooking class with him and he also setup a variety of water activities for us while we stayed there. The rooms were really nice and the AC was definitely the way to go. The biggest takeaway I had from this experience was how truly amazing the food was. Indian food is great at restaurants, but having it homemade for breakfast and dinner was on another level. Thank you Jose for such a memorable experience. It's one I won't forget! Highly recommend staying here over other options like hotels or other AirBnB's.
