In the beautiful waterways and backwaters of the Kuttanad region of Central Kerala lies Emerald Isle, an exotic haven of tranquility, seemingly remote from city life, yet barely 10 kilometers from Alleppey Town. Tucked away on this delightful island lies the Emerald Isle Heritage Villa, an ancestral Country House set in 9 acres of secluded grounds – your Retreat into a Paradise of Peace. Emerald Isle Heritage Home is situated in an island resplendent with exotic flora, breathtaking flowers, myriad birds and butterflies to make for a memorable holiday, affordable and unforgettable. A truly wonderful way to spend your time on the banks of the backwaters of Kerala! Our house, dating back 150 years, retains its original architectural features, mostly in teak, with splendid wood carvings. There is also a fine Ara, the timber storeroom used in former times for the golden harvest of rice – golden because the island’s lush green paddy fields turn gold at the time of the harvest. Our property stretches across 9 acres including lush green paddy fields and fish ponds. All meals are served in dining room. Please ask us if you want to have any special facilities like Ayurvedic treatments or houseboat rides. Emerald Isle is ideal for those wanting to relax, sun themselves or getting away from it all. The tranquil air here is salve to frayed nerves and everyday tensions. Read a book or taste the locally harvested ’toddy’ fresh from the coconut trees ! When you tire of lazing in a hammock, or sunbathing in the courtyard garden, you can take a walk around the island, go fishing or have a swim. Emerald Isle Heritage Villa offers peace, privacy and pure relaxation. There are only 5 rooms (All Air-conditioned) for guests and each has its own en-suite Open-Shower bathroom with all modern facilities. The en-suite bathrooms have been tastefully done and open to the sky above to give you a feel of being truly closer to nature at Emerald Isle!

We had to make an urgent trip to Pandalam a few days back. Since the drive back to Thrissur would take at least 5 hours and we were to commence our return journey after 4 PM,we planned an overnight stay at Kumarakom and I sought the help of my friend Sreekumar,a Kuttanad native to recommend a good resort. He persuaded us to try Emerald Isle at Pulinkunnu, mear Nedumudy instead of the routine Kumarakom resort. And boy, wasn't he right. We could only spend a night and half a day but it turned out to be an unforgettable experience. Emerald Isle is situated bang on the banks of the Manimala River with a small motor able path separating it from the river. The Heritage Villa, which now serves as a home stay is constructed in the traditional Kerala ' nalukettu' style and surrounded by coconut palms, nutmeg trees, chiku trees and a wide variety of flowering plants as well as lush rice paddies on one side. The rooms are spacious and a special attraction is a shower room ,open to the sky. Food we had was traditional travancore fare which was delicious. Vijo Manimalathara, our host was kind enough ,at my request to provide us with fresh tapped Toddy he had organized locally accompanied by Kappa and fish curry. The Manimala River is on its backwater stretch at this point and is wide and calm, with small boats of all sizes plying it's waters. Small cottages dot both banks of the river. Early morning the next day,the three of us took a long leisurely walk on the riverside path. The sights are unique to the Kerala backwaters. Rafts of ducks paddling along serenely a straggler quaking plaintively at its mates paddling ahead, their minder in a small dugout trying frantically to keep the raft together, a silver blue flash as a Kingfisher makes its dive to prey on an unwary fish, snake birds uncoiling their necks for a brief second and diving to the depths again, herons perched on one leg and intently peering into the river from the shallows and people unmindful of all this going on with their daily chores. We were lucky to catch Rajesh a local Toddy tapper engaged in his craft. This was a unique experience for Bindu and Renu. Rajesh was only too happy to let us videograph his work but also explained the process and showed as his machete and tapping bone. After a leisurely breakfast, we took a 2 hour trip on the river in a covered Shikara. The plan was to cruise into the Vembanad lake into which the Manimala empties. Unfortunately, the estuary to the lake was closed for the day by a couple of barges undertaking some construction across the estuary. However we were able to cross into the Pamba river, cruise downstream to Kainakari Island and return to the Manimala through a network of smaller canals. A quick lunch and it was time to drive back to Thrissur after bidding good bye to our wonderful host Vijo. This account would not be complete without a word of appreciation for Shyam, who assists Vijo and looked after us with great care.

Calm, clean and idyllic, very established old wooden building with a traditional room and a very cozy bed, soft mattress for indian standards. One could take a shower watching the stars. The food was very good, also for me being a vegan. We could take a walk along the canal and watch inhabitants walking, playing football i. a.. There is a bench next to the water where one can watch the sunset. Its great that one can watch fireflies. Also a garden behind the house leads to rice plantations. Staying here was a unique experience we are grateful for.

If u are tired of the hustles of city life and is looking forward to a quiet vacation, then this is the place you are looking for. Visited the place just a couple of days prior to Christmas. It's a 150 year old heritage bunglow on the shores of river Pamba. We had taken two rooms with interconnecting passage. The rooms were exquisite with lots of wood work on the roof floors and walls. Both rooms had open to sky bathrooms. Linen were fresh and clean. The premises are covered in greenery with lots of fruit trees. There are multiple ponds in the property. Behind the resort is 1000 acres of paddy field. The food were extremely delicious and homely. Looking forward to visit this place soon.

Lovely to arrive by a traditional boat at this idyllic homestay. The hosts were very helpful in arranging activities. The shakira cruise and country boat ride are particularly recommended. Even cycling is a safe option on this quiet island. Clean and comfortable room and surrounded by gardens. Lots of birds to be spotted so worth taking your binoculars.
