We had been guests at Ashtamudi Home Stay on 25th and 26th April, 2015. It was a wonderful stay with warmth and hospitable service. Cosy rooms, decent price, nice location. Close to KSTRC stand and chalets. Easy access to hypermarket and The famous Thaff restaurant..... All three outlets at walking distance from here.

After browsing on tripadvisor, we booked Asthamudi homestay for one night stay in Allepey before proceeding to houseboat. It take's roughly 1 hour 30min to reach Alleypey from airport and cost you RS1500 (transport can be arrange by Uma). Even though it was a short stay, we were amaze with the hospitality provided by Asthamudi homestay crew (Uma, Subash & Shaji). The room was cosy and clean with no comments to give. If you choose room with fan in summer season, it will be abit hot. I will suggest to go for aircond room. However, the room was great and they have compoun outside the room to relax with a chill beer. Alleypey town is just walking distance from Asthamudi and no auto required. Overall stay Was Obviously Wonderful.

After staying here I can see why Ashtamudi has so many great reviews! I stayed for two nights here and would have loved to stay for more. I was upstairs in one of the bamboo rooms. The room was very nice with attached bathroom (toilet and cold shower). The hosts are very welcoming and are open to chatting and sharing tips on the best sights to see and best restaurants to eat at in Allepey. (They also do houseboat hire). It is centrally located, close to the Kottayam ferry terminal and just 50 or 60 rupees from Allepey beach and train station. If you are looking for somewhere nice, friendly, in a good location and at a good price (500 rupees/night low season).. then look no further!

We stayed one night and it was our worst night in India. The house is in a crowded ally by the canal, a severely mosquito infested area. The Bamboo room was hot, and did not have any way to let air circulate in, without opening the screen-less windows to also let the bugs in. The bugs could all get in through the many chinks and holes in the bamboo anyway. Not only were we covered with mosquito bites the next morning, but my husband and daughter had dozens of ant-bites on their hands and feet, and bed-bug bites on their faces as well. We all got hardly any sleep thanks to the stuffiness and bug-biting. Aweful! And a health hazard!

Room condition is average. Ambiance is below average. Mosquito and rats may eat your valuables as per my terrible experience during October 2014. However, the owners are cordial, helpful. Wi-Fi speed is good. Breakfast and dinner is available and quality is good as compared to value. The owner have own house boat and may arrange sikara for the guests. However, stay experience is horrible.

Stayed for a night. Beautiful interiors in the traditional bamboo hut style and reasonably well equipped with modern amenities. Hosts were very pleasant and the home cooked breakfast of dosas was a definite plus point. Value for money

We would normally let our taxi driver recommend a place to stay but as he was unavailable I turned to Trip Advisor, our first enquiries to listed hotels could not accommodate us, not unusual as we only needed a one night stay.

On contacting Ashtamudi Homestay the communications were excellent vie e-mail and phone and guided by the excellent reviews plus the 2013 TA Certificate of excellence we felt fairly confident in the booking which was made for one night for two rooms as our driver would be accompanying us.

On arrival we were faced with a single track mud lane to negotiate to reach the property, we were met by a male member of staff in scruffy work clothes who sat us down in reception where there were comfortable seats and fish in tanks to watch.

We were then taken to the room via a narrow spiral staircase (not easy with luggage) on the first floor and advised that room 206 was cooler than the others, our driver was allocated a separate room.

Log in details for the WiFi were given and I soon logged on to the internet, we asked for the necessary forms and paper work on arrival and were told "later".

To be honest if we had not arranged a previous engagement within hours of arrival we would have checked out but decided that it was not practicable to do so as our appointment in Allepey was a matter of hours away.

During the afternoon we asked on three occasion if we could have the hotel register and necessary paperwork such a "C" forms and were told "later", we knew places other than Kovalam were fairly lax and indeed we have stayed on houseboats in Allepey where they were not at all interested with paperwork and thought that this was the case here.

The room was dark dingy and shabby old carpeting gave of dust as you moved through the room, there seemed just a smell and haze of dust within the room which caused constant sneezing, the TV was so small as to be unusable, the bedding was clean and towels smelt freshly laundered a small luxury, the room furniture was a painted wooden shelf array that had seen better days with burn marks to the top of the unit and dust gathered in corners.

The electrics in the room in my opinion are a fire hazard bearing in mind I am an ex fire fighter if there was a problem then the whole top floor would soon be involved due to the wooden bamboo construction.

The bathroom was dingy and outdated with the toilet not fixed to the floor, hot water was provided on request which was adequate and very hot.

The staff cannot be blamed for the mosquitoes or cockroaches in the room but in my 11 years of traveling in Kerala it is the first time I have used a mosquito net provide, this brought its own problems as the net was full of dust which we breathed through the night causing coughing and a restless night.

Unusually my Wife and I were awake at 5 in the morning, our driver usually rises at 5:30 to ready the car and go for a run, he had to phone somebody to let him out of the locked gates, this in itself presents a problem to guests should there be a fire at the homestay they would not be able to exit the premises. We ourselves tried to find some one to check out but there was nobody around.

On speaking to our driver he stated he could have found better cleaner rooms in a better location with TV at half the price charged for the rooms we had used.

We started to load luggage into the car just before 7 in the morning and were ready to leave when a member off staff half clothed cleaning his teeth showed himself, My wife went to pay and he asked for passports to do the paperwork which were already packed in the car, we paid a room boy and left as enough was enough, it is the hostel responsibility to ensure paperwork is complete an they had all afternoon and were asked on three occasions for the necessary paperwork which was not provided.

All in all one of the worst stays we have had in 11 years of traveling around Kerala.

I stayed at Ashtamudi for a whole month and I can advice everyone to do so! When I arrived in India I was a bit nervous because it was the first time for me to go on a trip all by myself (I'm 21). But Uma, Subhash and Shadi made me feel at home immediately. They are so nice people and I really miss them now. The homestay is perfect: very good rooms, a nice, big and quiet terrace on the first floor, close to everything (busstation, shops, boats, beach, ...) the food is delicious!!, and Subhash and Uma can help you with all your plans without charging you any more money than you would pay if you would arrange everything by yourself. Also if you are lucky and there happens to be a hindu festival somewhere nearby, Subhash might take you there and for me that was an amazing experience. I also went shopping with Uma several times, which was also great :). And because I stayed there for a whole month they really treated me like family and even invited me to come with them to an engagement party and a wedding party! Also if you want to learn some malayalam, Subhash is a great teacher :) Poyittu varam and nanni!

Just stayed for a night with Ashtamudi.THE BEST THING about the visit is the hospitality of hosts. They are very kind, generous and go out of the way to help us and definitely make us feel home. Any questions, recommendations or tours? they will help you at any time :) The owner Mrs. Uma has arranged for my Shikaara ride with a nice person who was ever willing to answer all our queries. Mrs Uma, the owner of the home stay was more than willing to assist you in whatever field you seek information about the tour. I traveled solo and she did whatever she could do to help me in making my first solo trip memorable. I recommend this place totally :) Thanks a lot Uma aunty.

Good Service brings people back, so i would definitely go back when in Alappuzha; the owners are very gracious and helpful; any questions, recommendations or tours? they will help you at any time. You can have tea and breakfast, simple but good. The rooms are comfortable, i preferred the main floor since they have a.c., and the bed is also comfy, simple rooms with the awkward Indian type of shower which is in the middle of the floor, but that's the norm. The place is small so is not impersonal, you get to meet with the other guests; the entrance is located in an alley, kind of awkward but the home is very quiet, it is close to the busy part of the city, a supermarket is just right out of the alley; it is also close to the canal which is convenient whenever you want to take a boat ride of any kind.
The train station is about 60 rupees in a rickshaw.
