Xandari Riverscapes, luxury traditional houseboats in Alleppey backwaters. Life on the backwaters has a different set of rules. First, since there are no roads we depend on canals, rivers and lakes for our travel routes. Most families have a boat of their own. Children often learn to swim at least as early as they learn to walk-you are likely to see kids splashing in the local equivalent of a playground. Their school buses float, as do the postal vessels delivering to homes here. Even the supermarket floats!River Escapes provides an experience of the backwaters of Kerala in a vessel whose history harkens back to the ancient rice trade of this region while also providing modern comforts. These vessels are designed to balance authenticity and innovation. They are engineered to balance comfort and environmental responsibility - we pioneered the technology now considered the gold standard of emissions reduction. Most importantly they are staffed by members of the local community who are proud to showcase their corner of God's Own Country to visitors.A unique set of waterways in our state's central region allows us to showcase three districts that represent the "rice bowl" of Kerala - all by boat. We started operating our houseboats in 2006 and are now the respected leader on the backwaters in terms of environmental responsibility, commitment to the communities where we bring visitors and in terms of guest satisfaction.

The crew were excellent. We had Soni Arun and Ravere on the boat. They were so helpful especially as my husband is disabled. The food was delicious and the bedroom was very spacious with an excellent shower. The landscape was beautiful and we had a very tranquil stop over

Property's Favourite Review
Even before we arrived, the lady at the office called our travel agent to confirm a particular dietary sensitivity, so we knew they pay good attention to detail. From the moment we stepped aboard the “Chaliyar”, the crew (Sonny, Sujith, Aneesh) couldn’t do enough for us and served up a wonderful lunch, dinner and breakfast. The boat is amazing - very authentic, but also well equipped with nice bedroom room (with A/C and fan) good hot shower, private dining area and lovely viewing deck. We also enjoyed the transfer to a powered canoe to tour the narrow canals and see how important the waterway is to all the people who live and work there. In the evening we moored up and the crew guided us through the nearby village before serving us a real feast of a meal in the dining room. The bedroom was nice and cool, comfortable and quiet. If you like birds, you will see numerous cormorants, egrets and fish eagles and kingfishers all the way. It was a really nice way to spend a day & night, and we were sad to leave our great hosts behind.

A day on a houseboat in the Kerala backwaters might be a tourist cliche but that’s for a reason. It was the most delightful 24 hours of relaxation and a wonderful tonic after two weeks of hectic touring in Southern India. The crew were very friendly, our room was air-conditioned with an en-suite bathroom and the food was excellent. Next time we might spend another day.

Rarely do I leave reviews but having spent two of the most relaxing evenings I have ever had on a holiday before, I felt I absolutely had to on this occasion. I can't recommend Xandari Riverscapes enough. The houseboat was charming, gorgeous. The air-conditioned bedrooms (berths) are a good size, and clean. The bed was comfortable. The ensuite shower had plenty of hot water. But honestly you want to spend as much time out on deck anyway because who don't want to miss a minute of the breath-taking backwaters of Kerala. With a pair of binoculars and a great bird reference book on board, you can just lose yourself for hours. The only way to gauge the time is when you're gently asked to make your way over to the table where a delicious, beautifully prepared meal has been presented, freshly prepared by the onboard chef. Every meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner were superb. We had 3 crew on board with us, including the captain of course, but you never felt intruded upon. All round a tremendous experience and I honestly didn't have a tense ligament in my body from the moment I stepped on board!! All the staff were fabulous, couldn't do enough to help you. Including, and importantly a shout out to Honey, who greets you when you arrive with the warmest of welcomes. Efficient, accommodating, a lovely, lovely young lady. Things to note; If you can, take two nights. One night you cruise, have lunch , afternoon cruising, supper and evening moored. Next morning you head on back to base, having had breakfast. A great experience of course. But.... Two nights you get a whole extra day gently cruising away the time. And lots more delicious food of course :) If you drink alcohol you need to take your own on board. Get it from the government off-licence. They're an experience in themselves!! The water is filtered and fine to drink. All the food is prepared with the filtered water. The crew do like to bed down at 10pm, and they sleep on the floor of the deck and the kitchen so you won't be up late but it didn't matter to us as we wanted to get up to see the sun rise anyway. Spectacular! Very few mosquitoes which you'd think would be a problem on the still backwaters but neither my husband nor I got bitten while on board. If you can, GO!!

What a way to start the year - we did our cruise on New Year’s Day. The staff on board were so friendly and attentive. Room had aircon and a fan. Fans on top and bottom deck. Views incredible. Lovely little small boat ride through smaller canals at 3.30pm. Food was so good. Fish molee was best we had in Kerala.

Room Tip: Switch to turn on aircon was outside room on our boat. Ask for spice if you like it, as they go...

From the moment we arrived, everything was very prompt and efficient. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The rooms were very comfortable, air-conditioned rooms with nice beds and pillows, and the best shower we have had in India. The food was amazing and plentiful. It was a peaceful experience after the hassle and bustle of tuk tuk.

This houseboat experience was stellar from the minute we arrived at the dock. The staff was very attentive and professional throughout. I have nothing but good things to say about this company, the staff , the quality of the boat. Highly recommend this experience if you are looking for a luxurious stay.

This is an impressive, well organised set up. The boats are incredibly comfortable and spotlessly clean. The crew are friendly, engaging, professional and well trained. You only need 1 night as ‘once you’ve seen the backwaters, you’ve seen it’. They also organise a short canoe trip so you get to see the narrow canals and the surrounding environment. I have dropped it one star as we had to pay a £30 per head supplement in cash on arrival as it was Christmas Eve (noting the staff were Hindu) - and I don’t think we got anything extra for it…. The food was clean, tasty, plentiful - but basic chicken and fish curried dishes (there was no elaborate prawn/lobster special occasion type food). I would definitely recommend and it was worth £500 (but £620 was pushing the VFM envelope).

This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience I had with my family. We saw the beautiful culture of the Kerala backwaters from the unique lens of the houseboat with first-class service. Thank you Pradeepa who was our awesome captain, Jobi who made sure we were extremely comfortable, and Ranjit, the incredible chef. We are very grateful to have this experience and recommend it to others.

The experience was amazing from the reception to the entire boat trip. Lunch, dinner and breakfast was just great. The skipper and his crew made us feel welcome and like a big family. I will highly recommend Xandari to others.
