We travelled southern india for 3 weeks, stayed in all types of accommodation from expensive to inexpensive. Riverside Retreat was the most memorable and the cheapest. Wish we had stayed there longer. Jiji was wonderful and met us at the "corner shop" then we walked across a wonderful bridge to discover " a little bit of heaven" we were very hungry as we had been travelling for hours and it was no problem for Jiji to make us tea and fried Bananna's, you gotta try the fried bananna's. The view from the room was amazing, the backwaters were on our doorstep and you could lie in the hammock and watch the world go by, it is a busy waterway. Kingfishers feeding, locals transporting all necessaries, houseboats cruising along. At night we sat at the table with other travellers to…
This is the place for you if you are looking for a quiet and fairly rural stay near to Alleppey. You can have a rickshaw (30 mins) drop you there from Alleppey. The location is on a river but it backs on to rice paddies. It is quiet and small. The rooms are smallish but clean and have fans. The owners are super friendly and the food is outstanding (you will need to have breakfast and dinner there, as there are no restaurants nearby). You can catch a bus into Alleppey (I think it is an hour or so). Activities include canoeing, walking and watching the world going by in a hammock. I definitely recommend a stay here...especially given that it is not very expensive.
We stayed here for three nights on recommendation from another homestay in Kochi. It is a beautiful haven in the backwaters where you can watch the tourists go by on their boats whilst you explore the small channels by canoe and walk around the friendly local settlements, much more satisfying. The food is excellent, some of the best we had in Kerala, we even got the chance to visit the kitchen and learn delicious recipes. Fantastic, friendly hosts who really made you feel at home.
Riverside Retreat is a great place to relax and unwind in backwaters of Kerala. Rooms are simple, but clean, and offer amazing view of Pamba River and Kollam Canal. Within walking distance, one can see rural life of Kerala, with beautiful rice fields, coconut trees and fisheries. Owner Jiji John and his family are helpful, polite and good natured. They prepare excellent dinner and breakfast for guests. They also arrange for transport and canoe rides on request. Hotel also has some hammocks on the riverside, where one can spent an entire day just chatting, watching the river or reading/listening something. Also, one can walk along river/backwaters for long, and enjoy the unspoiled beauty of Kerala backwaters. Also, because it's a homestay, all guests share dinner table, and one…
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Riverside Retreat. Jiji and his family were lovely hosts and the food was so tasty. The room was basic and immaculately clean all you could ask for in such a beautiful place. The scenery from the room was stunning. Jiji was so helpful with arranging a houseboat for us and a rickshaw to take us to Allepey. Great place to chill, relax and take in the stunning surroundings great option if you want to get away from the hustle of Allepey before or after a trip on a houseboat. Would love to go back. Highly Recommended!!!
