We visited ourlander island resort during January 2021. We stayed for 2 nights. The cottages are serene with essential and no cluttering amenities. Bathrooms and rooms were very clean.

Mr. Ratheesh took us for a bird watching walk to the farm lands around the island for about an hour. It was very educational to know the culture, the flora and fauna and the birds in the island. He also took us on a ride in the small boat rowing around the canals that went through the villages. The water flows between pamba and the kumarakam backwaters and changes direction periodically. hence it is not a fresh water habitat completely and also not a brakish water.

We had a very traditional home cooked meals by Mr.Ratheesh's family. Due to the extra precautions due to Corona, Mr. Ratheesh had shifted his home to the resort keeping the resort isolated from the outside. The idea of providing individual dining at the courtyard of the cottage was very safe and made meal time a joy looking at the waters. The cottages are all facing the river and have good views. We got to eat the native mussels, karimeen pozhichathu(steamed) along with traditional kerala dish suchas kappai, puttu, appam, kadalai kurry etc. Good quality food at the right amount.

If you are planning an after COVID refresher trip to Kerala, you will enjoy this property. The cost has been kept reasonably low with best efforts of nature enthusiast Mr. Ratheesh by strictly sticking to the local products and the local labours. You will be happy to have enjoyed kerala without causing any impact on the land and the village.

.
The trip was value for money. Due to only a few cottages in the island you get very good privacy. The river is about 30 feet deep. We dared to take a dip by the shore.

Only negative was that the mosquitoes reached the courtyard on the second night, though the rooms were sparred..Since we were not using any mosquito repellent or cream we could not sit outside late night. The room freshner could have been used on the second day too to drive them away.

Overall it was a wonderful experience, wanting to visit again.

We enjoyed being able to watch all the houseboats pass by from our great viewpoint in the treehouse - this seemed a much better option than actually being on one of the houseboats! Friendly staff and Ratheesh the manager is very knowledgeable about the bird life. We enjoyed the early morning village walk with him as well as the sunset canoe trip with lovely guy whose name I've sadly forgotten (he also met our taxi at the start and took us back at the end.) Food was very good throughout. One day we took the local ferry from the nearest landing point and enjoyed our meandering (and extremely economical) boat trip into Allappuzha - although after a very short time there we decided to come back to the peace and calm of Our Land! Sunrise here was also stunning. PS we followed a good tip in other reviews and asked the taxi driver to make a detour so that we could pick up some beer at the government beer shop on our way from the station, which the resort put into the fridge for us.

this is a great resort. Staff were very helpful and friendly...it felt like family. We had a cottage right on the backwaters so saw many of the boats go by. Although we didn't get to go on one of the houseboats, we were only there overnight, staff showed us their houseboat. And, we had a great motorized canoe trip on the backwater, so got the idea of what that is. Food was good, room was comfortable, the shower was warm....

I was there for 2 nights. Access by canoë. Nice surroundings.Cottages are ok.
But : very poor service (rooms not tidied daily, you have to go and fetch drinking water, no early morning tea, very few explanations as to the organisation of the place/the room,...)
Eco friendliness seems more greenwashing than reality (air conditionning,..)
Meals : indian style. No fruits except bananas.Breakfast : fruit juice and indian omelette and toasts available. Quantity ok.
Activities : canooing, early morning promenade around paddy fields for birds watching,..
Room in tree to be avoided. Re : pictures

Dear Erythrea, Thankyou for staying us and for your review. We have kept a booklet in the room which provides complete details about the organization of the place, the rooms, the activities etc and the same is available on the website. Room Survice: The room will not even have a single speck of dust, we always keep the rooms clean and neat. The bed is always kept clean and fresh. We give services on alternate days but under request we can provide for it everyday. Bed-Tea : We believe in the concept of giving freedom and privacy to our guests. Hence, this enables the guests to come to the reception anytime to order for tea/coffee according to their preference of time. Greenary: I would humbly disagree upon the part where you said we are greenwashing the land. The resort is full of tropical trees which were naturally growing there and some which we have planted since more than 2 decades ago, you can find rare migratory birds and many other species. You will rarely spot non-indeginous plants as we are against it. However, we have set up air conditioning because the district falls under a humid climate and needs AC for the curent climatic situation, this does not come under greenwashing or faking a green ecosystem. Meals: We provide Indian style meals made from fresh and organic ingredients. We do NOT use a deep freezer to keep cooked food. This makes sure that the food served is always hot from the stove. The fruit juices are freshly squeezed and is usually pineapple juice. We serve the most fresh and organic fruits among all and this is why we served you bananas during your stay. Tree House: Our Tree House is an experience and is the most highly demanded of all rooms with frequent visitors. It is a place which will leave you wanting for more.

As you arrive at the riverbank you realise that Our Land is indeed an island, a rather small one, and that you have booked to stay there for two whole days, and you'd better enjoy watching the passing rice boats or arrange an escape because in truth there isn't really enough to do here for more than a night. You also realise, when your fellow guests arrive at the communal table for dinner so worse for wear as to be incoherent, how dependent your experience is in any shared homestay on the most unpredictable element, the company! But it's worse on an island. Our Land was somewhat redeemed for us by a) a very good morning bird walk, well guided, which went someway to making up for the rather dull and short sunset canoe trip up and down the main river (small channels are clogged by the invasive water hyacinth which is not Our Land's fault but, along with providing only one canoe, severely limits exploration by water.). B) by being able to be picked up to get out for much of the middle day (though we had hoped not to need to do that) and c) by some very nice (and sober ) fellow diners the next night. But of all the places we stayed in a month of shortish stops, this was the most disappointing. The owner hasnt really understood the needs of guests, (eg you can only eat when called, there is no way to get a juice or a snack outside this time that we could see, there was no discussion of what we might like to do, simply a very short choice of activities, there is a basil fawlry aspect to the way guests are organised, no wifi, though you can see a pylon from the rooms, and although the staff tried hard esp when they realised we were vegetarian, and were nice, they are under resourced and weren't up to service elsewhere. Finally the whole place is claustrophobically overgrown and if the enforced imprisonment doesn't to get you, the Mosquitos definitely will!

We traveled to here from varkala , it was 80r tuk tuk to the railway station and 550r each on the air con train to Alleppey .we paid 300r tuk tuk to ourland resort from the station, it's about 35 mins. Off the main road You go down a 800m dirt track ,and then I rang the hotel to get picked up by canoe, as it's on a small island , (I have an Indian vodaphone SIM card ), didn't know how they would know you were here otherwise, although there is a shop here and maybe they ring for you ?,( or ask tuk tuk driver , have the phone number handy), All the cottages are with river views and very nice inside ,( id recommend the tree house for the best views) ,a lovely big room with aircon and a ceiling fan, both of which were a bit noisy, but earplugs conquers all ! We immediately got fed ,a four course lunch, a huge ,amount of food ,really lovely as were all the meals here, the price we paid was 17000r for 3 nights 2 in the cottage and one on their brand new river boat. Inclusive of all meals and water, coffee ,tea .
The boat trip was fantastic, only one double room on board ,with a very large ensuite, the cruise was about 6 hours the first day ,(3 the second returning back), and we arrived last at the boat docking area overnight, and we were the last boat by over an hour to depart next morning , the crew were fantastic ,the captain disappeared for breakfast on the second day and without any instruction he asked me to drive the boat which I did for nearly an hour without him coming back ,trust indeed, I loved it , this houseboat I could not recommend more highly ,it was very new ,they had only done ten trips , so very clean and very comfortable , .excellent service and great food , totally recommend , but ring up and haggle for a great price .

Please leave a helpful vote if you find the review useful.it also let's me know your reading my reviews ,thanks .Gary

It was indeed a pleasant surprise to be in this tiny natural island. The nature is left free to flourish at its own. The large number of birds flocking into the Island & its chirping sound in the evening itself denotes the virginity of this island. Rooms here are well maintained, spotlessly cleaned & beautifully kept. I stayed at the hut on one corner of the Island & to me that is the best place to be if your intention is to just relax overlooking the backwaters. Room a bit small in size though have all the modern setting including an aircon. Food what is served here is out of the world, to be very frank the best Kerala preparation I have ever had. Food comes in large quantities too. Staffs needs a special mention, they were at my doorsteps for all my needs. Well taken cared. If you are staying at Ourland, go miss out the narrow canal cruise through the small canals of Alappuzha which indeed takes you close to the day to day living of the localities there. Overall I strongly recommend this place for a minimum of at least 02 nights stay to do full justice to the place. This place is a photographer’s paradise in all angles.

Well after reading all the reviews we were so excited about staying here. Yes the locations is lovely and being picked up by canoe was a nice too, however, the place overall was incredibly disappointing.

Starting with a positive, we had a lovely treehouse over looking the lake. The room was spacious but the bed sheets although clean, had stains on.

Absolutely no service whatsoever! The young boys who try to look after you are very young and it made me quite uncomfortable, I did not get the impression they are treated well there. I know this is not a 5 star hotel but when you are paying to stay somewhere you expect at least the most basic level of service but there was none.

Other than the 'guided' morning walks there is really nothing else to do there. The morning walks were nice but unfortunately the 'guide' who is also the manager, Did not teach you anything, you had to prompt him always to get information out of him. He was much more concerned about taking his own photos! His attitude overall was pretty bad and he seemed to have no interest in the guests, no interaction at all.

Also, bring everything you need with you, you can't even get a can of coke at lunch/dinner it would have to be ordered in. You don't get to choose food, you get what you are given- thankfully most of it was OK.

If you are all about location and don't care about service, quality, interaction, activities then this is the place for you otherwise I would avoid at all costs.

Lazing in my hammock, contemplating the next delicious meal was the highlight of our stay here. The table is filled with aromatic dishes of delicious grilled local fish, spiced fresh vegetables full of flavour and cooked to perfection. The chapattis and rice were perfect-the best I've had! Staying here is very peaceful-this won't be an active segment to your holiday-but you will be treated warmly and like a guest at a family home. (Ratheesh will be always smiling and ready to help!) Canoe the backwaters, listen to the sounds of local children playing in the water and snooze in your hammock. A lack of ice cold drinks made the 38 degree heat more arduous and there are a lot of insects to contend with! However, in a few short hours, another delicious feast will be presented to you!

I have been to many places around the world & stayed at many hotels/resorts but none of them have made me think of writing a review at TripAdvisor but definitely Ourland did that . To start with Ourland is a unique place amidst the best natural settings. This virgin island is kept as natural as it can be.. Trees & plants are left to grow at its own pace. All are rooms here face the never ending lakes. Rooms are spotlessly clean, bigger than many resorts with big bathrooms. Regarding food, I should that this was one of the best food I had on my trip to Kerala. All freshly cooked & served hot. The mouth watering Chicken curry needs a special mention. Friendly staff is a another highlight on this place. They are at your help at all the times. Activities which we undertook like the village walk & the boating are also done to perfection. Ratheesh who is a guide cum birdwatcher engages his travellers with his extensive knowledge on the bird in the area throughout the village walk. Overall I would highly recommend Ourland for anyone visiting Kerala especially Alappuzha for an authentic backwater & village life experience.
