The Knickerbocker, a member of Leading Hotels of the World, reopened its doors in February 2015 as the only Five-Star hotel in Times Square, after completing an expansive $250 million renovation by acclaimed interior designers Gabellini Sheppard. The Beaux Arts monument to New York's coming of age is situated at the southeast corner of 42nd Street between Broadway and Bryant Park. The hotel originally opened in 1906 by John Jacob Astor IV and welcomed both glitterati and dignitaries including such notables as Enrico Caruso, John D Rockefeller and F. Scott Fitzgerald. A New York City landmark, The Knickerbocker boasts 330 guest rooms including 31 suites; a signature restaurant and bar, Charlie Palmer Steak IV; St. Cloud-a 7,800-square-foot rooftop bar; a 2,200-square-foot event space for up to 160 guests; a ground level café, Jake's; and a state-of-the art fitness center.

A true oasis on Times Square. Lovely, large rooms with beautiful bathrooms. Location can't be beat! Bed was comfortable and plenty of room to put your things- shelves, closets, etc.

Hotel's Favourite
This is by far my favorite hotel in NYC. It's a great location and the rooms are fantastic. On top of the convenience to everything, the entire staff of the hotel always goes above and beyond to make sure we have a great stay. On our most recent stay, we were assisted by Victor, who helped us during check in, check out and the duration of our stay. We're definitely coming back!

We go to New York very often and usually stay in SOHO but opted for the Times Square area because we were there for our oldest sons 10th birthday and wanted him to have the real nyc experience. From the second we walked in the staff went over board for him. They chatted with him about all things New York, gave tips for the Knicks game we were going to see, and made him feel like the most special kid on the planet. Then we got to the room and they sent up cake, milk, cookies and even a teddy bear for him. All weekend they were just so attentive because they were kind and not because they had too. There was not one request they would not accommodate and did everything with such kindness. The kicker to their professionalism was when my son lost his teddy bear that he had since he was born because we changed rooms. They looked everywhere to no avail but did not give up. Make a long story short we got a call at the airport that the company that does laundry service found it and they shipped it to our house. What can I say, the staff at the hotel are some of the kindest and most attentive people I have every come across. They did not have to do anything stated but truly went overboard for our family!

If you want to experience the worst service - you can go to the hotel!!! The reception doesn’t know the procedure of checking inn, no one will ever smile to you. When you are asking the questions they look at you like you went to visit them in their house!!! It so sad, because the hotel and the rooms are so nice, and they all destroyed it with the service and the people they hired!!! Senior Managers, make some trainings to your stuff, if you at least know the word -SERVICE!!! Yes one more, when you freeze my money, you have to charge me with the money you already froze, not double charge me!!! I just found out at the airport that your fantastic night team charge my card twice!!!

If you only read the start of this post, don't be fooled by the different room categories offered by this hotel. We fell for the higher-priced "Premier City View" room on the basis of the associated photos on the hotel website. We did not even get a room that met the description of the "Superior Room" (the lowest room category) nor the "Deluxe Room"category (the next category up). On check-in, we were told we had a room on Level 7. I indicated that a room on that level could not offer a city view as booked. The check-in person immediately responded by saying "all rooms are subject to availability". I pressed back saying I had booked a Premier City View room and if one was not available then we should be refunded the difference in price for a lower category room. He almost gleefully retorted "you have pre-paid for your room, and we never guarantee a room type". Huh? We went back and forth but it was almost like a mantra used in response to a common complaint. We were forced to accept Room 712. I was staying with my two adult daughters and we needed two queen beds. We walked into a tiny room with two beds squashed in. I sat and checked the website photos and descriptions. See my photos of the room we were allocated. The website depicts a "Superior Room" with two large windows with a large couch under the windows, the "Deluxe Room" as a corner room with one window on one wall and another on another wall with a large couch under one window, and the "Premier City View" is obviously on a high floor with a beautiful city view (the website touts a "dazzling view") and two large windows with a spacious room area. We got none of those. No city view, no "dazzling view", no couch, no light bright double windows. Just two beds with one pushed up against a single small window looking directly at the brown building across the road (the view similar to the "Superior Room" but with only one small window). To add to the insult, our room was on a junction near the end of the corridor (the end furthest from Times Square) so we had a fire door exit opposite our room which was regularly slammed shut. day and night. Photo provided. I left scathing feedback about the room being different to the website descriptions when logging on to the hotel wifi which asked for my experience so far. Then came an extraordinarily call from Hotel Manager Mercedes. After reiterating my complaint, she said to me: "Madam, you are not understanding ... You are speaking with hotel management. I am not the marketing team. I am not the PR team. I agree that your room is not what is on the website, but I am not responsible for what is on the website". How extraordinary. She then commenced with the hotel mantra about "all rooms are subject to availability" ... blah blah blah. No apology, no room move, no refund, no conciliatory or empathetic tone. I won't go on about everything else that was wrong with this "five star hotel". The Leading Hotels of the World association needs to check this hotel against its membership criteria of "luxury hospitality". We were attracted by the promise of a renovated historic building with a dazzling view over Times Square. In our experience, independently owned hotels go above and beyond and offer personalised high quality standards, where customers are respected and concerns addressed with grace. Relais and Chateaux members always meet these standards. Check carefully what you have booked, and be ready for debate when you don't get the quality and features of the room you expect. Don't book a "Premier City View"room unless you are prepared to accept the room in my photos.

We stayed from Long Island for a wedding in the area. The moment we arrived, the staff was amazing. Our room was beautiful and modern and clean. Breakfast was delicious and the dining room was bright and friendly. So easy to walk to Bryant Park to relax the following day. We did get a late check out. This made things less hectic.

Was supposed to be upper floor. One robe and one glass in bathroom instead of two. Very noisy beside elevator. Elevators very slow. Insufficient lighting in room, elevators, reception. Couch in room 1 star. Needs replacement. Concierge, bellman and breakfast were excellent.
