I fell in love with the East Village living out of St Mark's Hotel for 8 days in 2008. Situated above a late night pizza-by-the-slice / bagel restaurant, opposite book stores, music stores and plenty of alternate clothing outlets, staying here gave me a very special New York urban experience. Slightly away from the skyscrapers further uptown, this location had...

Super location, clean, good price, good service (they even spoke French!). The only regret is that they don't accept credit cards, so you have to pay cash or with travellers. I went 3 times and it was great each time. The only thing: cross your fingers no to get a room on the upper floor when it rains!

6 guys in NYC for the the long weekend. This one step up from a hostel and far from fancy. If you are looking for a clean log cost place to crash this is a great place to stay. I woke up early one day (3 hours sleep was not enough) wanting something to eat and drink I stepped out...

Absolutely awful service. Very unprofessional, beware. My two female friends and I were told we could share a $130 room by one guy at the counter- later in the night we get a threatening phone call from the manager that one of us has to leave because the room is only meant for 2, or else they would call the...

Minimal hotel in a great location, steps from the Astor Place subway stop. Small clean rooms, clean bathroom, clean linens and towels, friendly helpful staff. No elevator, no room service, incoming calls only in room phone. Great pub downstairs, deli on the corner for your morning coffee and pastries, breakfast or late night pizza. Blow dryers at the front desk,...

We stayed at St.Mark's because a friend recommended the place to us. After a brief research of hotels online we thought that we would be getting a good value at St.Marks: for 135 USD a night we were promised a queen size bed and a private bathroom. In comparison, other hotels only offered a double or twin bed and a...

I was willing to give this a shot, based on the other reviews. The room was adequate in terms of space and cleanliness, but hovered between 85-90 degrees F all weekend. We later discovered that it must have been located directly above the pizza oven in the pizzaria downstairs. The preponderance of young European guests means that the smell of...

Booked this hotel on the recommendation of a friend who said it was good "if we just needed a place to sleep and shower." She was 100% spot on. This hotel is one step up from a hostel - beds, toilet, shower. Not a place to luxuriate and relax but you can dump your stuff and get some sleep. Other...

I stayed at St. Mark's Hotel for one Saturday night. You can't beat the free parking on the street and the low price for the stay. I only paid $120.00 for the night; a steal. The subway station is close by and the hotel location is in a very lively area, which I liked. As for the room, it was...

My partner & I were in NYC for 4 days in Nov. 08. The location is indeed central & the cleanliness notable. The staff were super friendly & helpful (some of them were even pervy! :)) You need to keep your expectations under control though, the double room was TINY, so was the shower, but it did the trick as...

Staying in East Village

Neighbourhood Profile
East Village
There’s still an independent vibe to the East Village, which offers plenty of unique small businesses catering to longtime New Yorkers and area college students alike. The East Village retains a bit of the old-time neighbourhood feel that you can still experience today thanks to a mix of locally-owned shops, cozy restaurants, and lively bars. The scale of the residential blocks makes this a wonderful place to wander up and down the streets searching for the newest hip spot, or an old-school favorite. In the center of the neighbourhood, Tompkins Square Park serves as a gathering point for the New Yorkers that call the East Village home. The people-watching here is hard to beat.
