Very clean, staff is incredibly nice and helpful - especially the manager -, the price is absolutely worth it. People are respectful of the fact that you don't have any full wall or roof to your room so most of them are especially careful. The location of the Bowery House is INCREDIBLE! In the heart of a up-and-coming area of...

Had 24 hours, in NYC, and chose this place because I wanted to stay in a new area. Such a beautiful little hostel, in Nolita, with a very cool history, A big shout out to Matthew and his gorgeous colleague (sorry I didn't catch her name) who took great care of me, and would make me want to stay there...

I stayed here twice some time ago while I was finishing up my Master's at NYU and commuting back and forth from Philadelphia. This place is good if you are not fussy about anything, have little to no luggage, and can either sleep through anything, or bring soft earphones so you can drown out the noise with a white noise...

Dearl Hollandtulips, Thank you for posting a review. I am sorry to hear that you were unhappy with your stay. We offer some of the most affordable accommodations in the NYC. As we are a hostel, we are priced well below a notoriously expensive NYC hotel. Guest safety is a major concern for us and wet floors are something we...

Our experience with the Bowery House hostel could not have been worse. Upon check in, we were told that there had been a problem with our booking and that the rooms we had booked (two rooms with windows) were not available, instead we had been put into windowless rooms. We arrived at the rooms to find that they were essentially...

Greta M, Thank you for your review. My apologies for your experience. We are a hostel and renown for our attentive and caring Front Desk which is better than most hotels in NYC. I assure you that is was a most unusual situation and not typical of the service provided our guests. I will look into your reservation and speak...

The good: - Really nice people - Marvelous location! - Very clean - Felt very safe - Hip interior - Nice showers. Sharing bathroom was not a problem, and I'm not really too happy about showering in the locker room. - Great rooftop terrace Being there just made me feel instantly at ease and well. The Bowery House is stylish and well equipped in terms of beds and amenities. The staff are super helpful and go out of their way to make you feel at home. The hostel is within walking distance of the subway and cool Prince Street. Beware, though, that the cabins have no ceiling so you will hear everything your neighbours are...

This room is basically like staying in a communal hostel/dorm with paper thin walls and no ceiling. Cabins are like living in a cardboard box with a bed in it. Offers no privacy, no peace and quiet. You literally have to whisper to have a conversation, you're not allowed phone calls in the rooms, food or drink because it wake...

Dear Chelsea M, Thank you for your stay and review! Our hostel on The Bowery started as the Prince Hotel in the 1920's. We are in a historic NYC building and have stairs to the front desk. The staff at the Bowery are brilliant and the location is great, easy access to the subway and several decent bars and restaurants are nearby in Chinatown, Little Italy and SoHo. However, this is not enough for me to return to the Bowery and I certainly would not recommend the Bowery to anyone else. The website is misleading, the building...

I had a last minute visit to NY and found this as one of the only places available under USD200 per night. I had an original cabin. Do not stay here if you have a choice. Although the location is convenient the area is grungey. The 'cabins' are in fact more like cabinets - you have a single bed with...

If you're looking for a hostel experience that's a cut above, this place is awesome. The private partitions give each guest privacy and your own space, secure luggage storage etc. in a way you can't get at a hostel. However, you still have the noise levels of your average hostel (earplugs highly recommended) as everyone is effectively sleeping on one...

Staying in Nolita

Neighbourhood Profile
Nolita
Despite being just off of busy Houston Street, Nolita maintains a low-key vibe that makes it a pleasant retreat in the heart of lower Manhattan. Short for “North of Little Italy,” Nolita was once considered to be part of Little Italy. Today, the neighbourhood is popular with young fashionistas popping in and out of the chic independent boutiques that line Mulberry, Mott and Elizabeth Streets. In addition to shopping, there are cozy restaurants and sidewalk cafes serving everything from new-school Italian food to the world-famous cronuts. While small in size (Nolita stretches just a few blocks in each direction), it’s a great neighbourhood to spend an afternoon people watching, window-shopping, and grabbing a bite to eat.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Our property, 220 Bowery, was built in 1927 as a manufacturing building. It operated in this capacity until it was reborn as The Prince Hotel in the 1940’s to serve as temporary lodging for soldiers returning home from World War II. All floors of The Prince Hotel were rebuilt with single room cabins that were just large enough for a bed and storage of essential items. The bathrooms were made communal so that the hotel operators could maximize its occupancy and house as many soldiers as possible. With its prime location and easy access to vices such as gambling, prostitution and saloons - some of the soldiers never left and decided to make the majority of the 200 cabins their long-term homes. It was in these single rooms that many of the Bowery’s most eccentric characters lived for decades adding to the lore and drama of New York’s former skid row. At The Bowery House, we have decided to preserve and restore every detail of the remarkable 1940’s cabin craftsmanship and in turn provide unique, authentic and historic accommodations to travelers from around the world. Part museum and part hotel, we hope you enjoy not only the neighborhood but also the living history that is The Bowery House. ... more   less
