Detailed Reviews
This was our first trip to Bayfield. We were greeted by the owner, Isaac, when we checked in and at our request, provided us with excellent advice on many aspects of this beautiful community. When we asked about renting bikes, Isaac provided details about a bike rental business that was closeby. We rented Ebikes and had a great time with them. We rode all around this beautiful town and took them on the ferry out to Madeline Island, rode them up to the parks on the island and hiked the wonderful trails present on the island. In a tourist area like Bayfield advice such as this is invaluable. We found the motel to be perfectly comfortable, clean, and spacious. It is worth noting that hotel is literally within a stone's throw of Lake Superior. Our room had a lake view and the various boats and ferry could be seen in the distance. The climate in this area is typically much cooler than inland areas with breezes coming off the beautiful, massive lake. We chose to turn the ceiling fan on low and leave the screened windows partially open so that the room would receive cross ventilation. We filled our days with the aforementioned biking, hiking, sailing, and literally collapsed on the comfortable bed as the slight breeze and sounds of the harbor lulled us to sleep. It is my experience that a locally owned hotel, with owners that actually live in the community, provides a level of care that simply isn't available in larger, corporate owned properties. We are already planning our second trip to Bayfield, and a stay at Seagull Bay is a forgone conclusion.

I have stayed here several times since 2015when my family bought a boat in the nearby Marina. The motel was always clean and we'll managed. Since I first stayed here the motel has changed ownership. The new owners have carried on the tradition of cleanliness and service.
I was a little dismayed however to see that they now accept pets, albeit with a well thought out policy that charges for the convenience or inconvenience.
This obviously personal, but I enjoyed the "no smoking no pets" policy that was in place in the past. In general this trend of people bring their animals everywhere is becoming a nuisance.
While I won't compare the effects of smoking on health to the effects of dogs on health they both are a common source of allergens and affect indoor air quality.
I was fortunate enough to be staying at the motel at an off-peak time so this wasn't an issue.
The on-site manager, Paul, was very helpful and accommodating!

Hi, Thank you again for the support since 2015. We are thankful for your wonderful thought out review. Although the pet and smoking, policy hasn't changed since previous ownership. We will take this into consideration moving forward. Please don't hesitate to call the office if there were to arise any issues with pets or smoking on the property in the future. See you again soon!

We stayed three nights in the kitchenette unit midweek while exploring the area hiking and cross country skiing. Our room was perfect, especially with the ability to make our own meals during this time of restaurant closures. The room was VERY clean, spacious and adorable. No frills here, but very comfortable bed, nice towels and linens, and a well supplied kitchenette. And the view? Amazing, especially if you happen to be able to catch a sunrise!

We were in the Residence house. Be warned that there is NO AIRCONDITIONING!! It was a nice enough place, and nice location, but it was sweltering hot with all fans blasting, plus 3 fans of our own that we brought.
I had called to double check if they had air, because I hadn't noticed any mention in the description. Phone call was returned 2 days later, and I was told that it wasn't an issue because it was ALWAYS pleasant and in the 60's at night. Not true. It was in the mid to lower 70's after having been in the mid 80's during the day. It was unbearable. We couldn't stand it and left a day early. All the other hotels in Bayfield were full, but we would have canceled and booked in Ashland if the owner hadn't assured us that it would be nice. What a huge waste of our money and a ruin to a much needed little 3 day vacation getaway! It cost us a total of $787. That's a lot of money to us. We wouldn't have been nearly as upset if we hadn't been lied to out right!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. I can’t imagine a better place to stay in Bayfield. It was the perfect location. A quick walk down a wooded trail ride into town. Quiet location with beautiful lake views. Older but very well-maintained property. We are a family of four that stayed in the cottage. It was a great space for a family. It could’ve easily accommodate it up to 8. They didn’t have out the cute decorative pillows on beds as seen on photos because of Covid, which totally makes sense. They thought of everything that you might need. Kitchen was fully stocked with every utensil you could need, and a nice collection of pots and pans etc. Unlike a lot of other hotels we’ve stayed out they had adequate lighting in every room with many lamps, every bed had a bedside lamp so you could see while you were reading. Also had plenty of hooks so you never have to figure out where to keep your wet towel or hang up your coats. The property was really nice with picnic tables and plenty of outdoor seating and hang out areas.

Beautiful renovation. The lake is always phenomenal, but we would pick an earlier weekend as a fair number of merchants were closed for the season. Oct. 9. Colors were great. Rooms tastefully done, very quiet and inn keepers are attentive.

Most importantly, there are two properties: One is an old-school motel with a nice view and the second is a modern property with a variety of rooms, some with an OK view and others with a window that looks out on the nearby highway. The website description could be better regarding the choices. Our room (28 or 29) was in the new property with no view and other problems. (Our room had a mural.) The new property does NOT have a trail into town; that is the older motel.
First the good: the staff was helpful on the phone changing reservations, etc. They were also helpful via texts. The room was clean and modern. The fridge was a nice size and the room came with a microwave (which we did not use). The bed was OK.
Second, the not so good. These comments are not complaints but are offered as suggestions for improvements. Here goes: The hot and cold water at the sink are reversed from the normal. There is no chair in the room. (A folding chair would fit.). There is no soap dish in the modern shower so one must put the soap on the shower floor. There are no bed side tables or reading lights. There are no instructions as to how to use the TV remotes. (Our cable was off our first two nights.). The AC unit fan control did not work and only ran on high. The windows do not open, as far as I could tell. If so, no screens.
Above all else, it is impossible to darken the room for sleep. The room has an uncovered skylight and a frosted glass entry door. Bring a sleep mask!
We were lucky with the weather. On a rainy day, this small room would be like a jail cell with no chair or table to sit at to do puzzles, etc.
Lastly, I must comment on the "shared deck." While it does have an OK view when you stand up, while seated, the lake is hidden by the deck railing. Also, it is unshaded and very hot during most of the day. This is in contrast to the yard of the older motel property, which is shaded with a grill and access to the Brownstone trail to downtown.

We LOVED staying at Seagull Bay. The owners were so kind and made us feel at home. All of our interactions with them felt genuine and caring. The staff texted us and was responsive to texts when we had questions. The weather was cold but the heat in the room worked really well and the bedding was warm enough. With COVID, check in/out was contactless and the staff were great at wearing masks and getting us what we needed. The fridge and microwave were perfect sizes for us to bring our own food too. We absolutely loved the paper towel roll holder too. The views were stunning and we loved having access to the Brownstone Trail. It was nice being able to have lakeside deck access and a huge window to watch the ferry and Lake Superior. The rooms are in solid shape considering that they are continuing to work on updates as they are able to. The room was big enough for what we needed, but definitely listen to the room occupancy when booking as there isn't much additional room for extra people (we had 1 bed for two people and a table and two chairs which was just enough). Best view in town and the coziest, most familial place to stay. We will definitely be back to Seagull Bay!

Bayfield is amazing and so is the Seagull. We were in Unit 2 (at the top of the small hill) and had a broad view of the lake and a private deck. The room was just large enough for us to feel comfortably with all the luggage we brought. It’s location put it only a 3 minute car ride from everywhere, including the Madeline Island ferry!

We stayed at Bay West. It was recently updated. From the floors to the ceiling and everything in between! Looks like lots of custom craftsmanship from the bed to the kitchen table. Even the storage for our things, which was a good size for our 3 day stay. Came with a small kitchen that was fully furnished (dishes, utensils, dish soap, etc.) with everything we needed to make our own food to save a little on lunch instead of going out for every meal. Fridge with freezer was good size for our food and drinks. Good size bathroom with toiletries included. Was able to log into my account for winding down watching tv at night on the Roku TV. It got into the 60's during the day and down to the 40s at night, so having the Air-condition and Heat was key for keeping the room nice and comfortable. I saw a previous review that there wasn't Air conditioning, so that must be another update they have done. The view from the room of Lake Superior and Madeline Island was picturesque. And just as enjoyable sitting out on the deck having a drink and playing games. We didn't light the fire pit, but nice outdoor space to guests. Walking distance to everything we wanted to do from the restaurants, shops and the ferry to Madeline Island. If you are wondering what to do just check out the book they provide. It has lots of recommendations and their story. This family owned place will definitely be where we will book next time we are in the area.
