#92 of 248 hotels in San Francisco
Historic Hotel in San Francisco, California Founded by the son of a Calfornia Gold Rush miner, the Marina Motel was built to celebrate the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge in the late 1930's. Designed as one of San Francisco’s first “motor-hotels” for the dawning of the automobile age, each room in this quaint Mediterranean-style motel has a private garage beneath the rooms, (courtyard garages are subject to size restrictions so guest are directed by the front desk to choose a garage that best fits their vehicle). Our 36 guestrooms and three suites are uniquely decorated with warm, stylish touches to make you feel at home. Our quaint courtyard, surrounded by colorful cascading flowers and a cobblestone driveway, offers a relaxing place to chat with friends. Flower boxes overflowing with fragrant blossoms adorn the windows adding European cottage charm. San Francisco’s top attractions are located within walking distance or a short bus ride from the Marina Motel The Marina Motel is still family-owned and operated today by the original owner’s granddaughter. For the past 70 years the Marina Motel has provided a beautiful and friendly place to stay while visiting San Francisco.

We were in San Francisco to visit a relative with cancer. The Russian front desk lady flirted with my Russian husband, no big deal. When I asked for a simple cloth she read me the riot act, made sure I knew she was not a house Keeper. We will never return

If you want to stay somewhere very nice and very affordable, please don't hesitate to pick this one. From the moment you meet the owners at the front desk, you feel right at home. It is family-owned and run, and they were very welcoming and helpful. For example, when something was wrong with the cold water not coming out of our kitchen faucet, we told them and they fixed it quickly and with a smile. The rooms themselves are super cute and comfortable; the bed was soft and we always felt well-rested. The full kitchen was so nice to have as we liked being able to cook some of our meals. The bathroom was lovely and updated. There was free parking in actual garage stalls, which was very nice to have as a lot of places don't have any sort of free parking. TIP: make sure to ask for a courtyard-facing room; Lombard Street, where the motel is located, is very busy and can be loud, and so I would assume the rooms facing the street would hear some of that noise. The best way to book with them is on their website or by calling them; it will make sure you get what you want without any sort of confusion. Do not hesitate to book here, I promise you won't regret it!

The place is quaint and cozy as the other reviews indicate. We stayed in a courtyard room, which was very quiet being that the motel is on busy Lombard St. The staff was friendly and courteous. Was happy to discover free parking in garages sitting under each unit. Would definitely stay here again!

What a find. This motel possesses all of the charm you would expect of a boutique motel. The rooms/suites are clean and comfortable. We stayed in a king unit with full kitchen (kitchen had everything you need to prepare a meal along with a k-pod coffee maker, microwave, toaster, full fridge with freezer, oven and range, utensils, etc.) off the court yard. There is free onsite parking in individual garages; a rarity in The City. The location is ideal near the Presidio, Palace of Fine Arts and within walking distance to some amazing restaurants that have adjusted to outdoor dining during COVID-19. Keep in mind that this facility was originally built back in the 1930's and the garages do not accommodate today's larger and wider vehicles. I have a smaller VW and was worried that I would hit my side mirrors when pulling in, fortunately I didn't. All units are upstairs, so if you have mobility issues, this might not be the place for you. The internet is also available long with cable TV. We did notice that there were no phones in our room. We were down on business and plan to return for relaxation and leisure.

We cancelled our plans to visit SF due to the corona virus. This is the only hotel that charged us to cancel 3 months in advance. We plan on going to SF after the pandemic is over, but will not stay at Marina Motel.
