Detailed Reviews
Stayed at the SF plaza hotel in September. I initially asked for a fridge, microwave and safe box but only had a fridge. When I asked if they had a safe box and microwave, they let me move into another bigger room with a safe and moved the fridge and microwave into the room too. Ceiling fan was good to keep the room cool.
Very friendly and really helpful staff, always ready at reception for you.
Traffic was a bit noisy but well worth the money. Handy Starbucks on the other side of the road.

The hotel is very well located! It’s in downtown, next to China Town. There are bus stations near. The hotel is not new but it was perfect for us. I was staying with my mom and sister in one room for tree people and it was very comfortable, with place where we can leave the luggage's, with tv and a little mini bar.

My recent stay is my fourth since August 2012. By far, Hotel Astoria is the most budget-friendly lodging option that I have ever stayed in my trips to San Francisco, where I felt safe and comfortable.
The room I was assigned was surprisingly spacious from previous experience. It even had a walk-in closet with hangers! Instead of a stall shower, it had a bathtub (I booked a room with private bathroom). There was plenty of furniture space, with a writing table, chair, corner leather chair, two tall table lamps and a big bed. There was no ceiling fan and the room could get stuffy so I opened the window for some breeze.
There was a mounted flat screen TV on the wall with remote control which I appreciate. It had the channels that I wanted, with good reception.
My room faced the street which I didn't mind because I enjoyed the bright sun in the morning when I opened the drapes a tad. The city view wasn't so bad, either, and I could easily check weather conditions before venturing out.
Starbucks is literally across the street from the hotel and could see it from my room window. I didn't get any pass for breakfast at the hotel because I would have my own munchies in the room or would get something to eat elsewhere (e.g. Ferry Building). I still appreciate the fact that there is a water bottle in the lobby (for cold and hot water supply) and used it all the time to fill my own portable water bottle.
The second floor common area is very popular for guests to use their laptop computer/other mobile devices. I stayed there for at least half-hour at a time to check my emails or browse the internet while planning for my next day's activities/destinations.
The Chinatown Gate is steps around the corner from the hotel and I went to Snow Garden restaurant (next to Sushi Boat) for my meals, which were very filling and comforting at decent prices. I especially enjoyed the bowl of Pork Wonton Noodle Soup with a cup of steamed white rice during a rather cold day. A pot of tea was always served with the meal. Snow Garden has many dish options and now my go-to place for a Chinatown meal.
I am grateful for Hotel Astoria and the availability of staff when I need their assistance. It makes my SF stay that more enjoyable, knowing that I have an affordable, safe, and comfortable lodging for relaxation and sleep at the end of hectic days.
I am scheduled to return to SF in June to watch a baseball home game and enjoy the city's sights and sounds again. And yes, I have already made my hotel reservation (I always book online via their website and keep my email confirmation receipt). Even though it will be summer season, the per day cost is still a fraction of what nearby hotels/lodgings charge. And that's always appreciated, especially in San Francisco!

Can't beat the location at the Dragon Gate entrance of Chinatown and a straight walk to Union Square and Civic Center area from this hotel. Tip, you can park free on Saturday & Sundays on Bush St as close as you can get to the hotel. For the money this is great value hotel, fairly clean rooms, give you all the basics you need.

+1
To start, the smell inside the building is just horrible (you know this depressing old building smell).
Secondly, they lie about the sizes of the beds, saying that it is the Queen Size, while it is a Full Size - I did my measures with the ruler, therefore, you will not get what you are paying for. The room had real sanitary problems as the bedsheets are not being changed often when the guests leave - I found in my bed many long hairs.. disgusting. And keep in mind, you will be charged 10 dollars if you ask keeping your luggage for a couple of hours after check out. If you ask to print out something, they charge you 1 dollar per page. This definitely shows their attitude to the guests.. Honestly, you don't want to stay here.

I recently stayed at this hotel while on a business trip, and a moust say that the staff, expecially at the fron desk[hats off to them], were not only courteous, but certainly made my stay a relaxing and fun one. I also had the previlege of meeting the GM. An absolutely lovely person. Overall a great experience, and I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a reasonably priced, comfortable hotel. Well Done SF Plaza!

We traveled as a family with grown up children. This hotel was really disappointing. The hotel was very old and rundown. The rooms were extremely small! It has a weird stench that makes you so uncomfortable. They did not clean the toilet well as there’s a lot of hair on the floor. The breakfast provided was just simple breakfast. Though the room is cheaper than some hotel, it’s much worthwhile taking others hotel.

This establishment does not meet the standards of American travelers. The room was pathetically small, the television had terrible reception - with the remote missing - Coffee was .50 a cup, and the 'free' breakfast was little more than orange juice and coffee with a 'tip' jar next to the extremely slow toaster.
The English speaking of the skills of the staff was marginal; when I inquired about the history of the hotel to the desk clerk, I received a blank stare.
The lobby in comparison to similarly priced hotels in this area was nothing but a desk and an overpriced coffee machine. The elevator sounded and operated as if it may not last another minute, and a sign next to it stating 'no more than 3 people' was a cause for concern.
Our fellow guests appeared to be travelers from different countries that perhaps are not aware of what is expected from lodging establishments.
If you are looking for a historic hotel in this area that caters to the expectations of the American traveler - the Hotel Vintage Court - is much more pleasant with outstanding 'perks' for the the same price, ie. wine tastings, toiletries available at the front desk, and an English speaking staff.
Stay away, you can do much better for the same price, in the same area.

Don't make our mistake! I found this place in a guidebook where it was listed as an inexpensive, yet clean place. The location was decent, near the Chinatown gates. The furnishings/beds were very old and the place is old and badly needed a coat of paint. It was noisy and the windows did not close properly. The TV had an old pull knob and was mostly snow. All that I can deal with--it appeared to be clean enough--but my husband woke up with bites all over him. He was COVERED in bites. He found the bedbugs in his clothing, so we know for certain that is what it was. My husband tried to communicate this to the front desk, but the man did not speak English very well. All he said was, "So sorry." We left and walked many blocks with our luggage to a new place after having to take everything to the laundromat. This cost us half a vacation day as well as the $$ to wash and dry everything on HOT (which was not good for our clothes either). We are home and rewashed everything and our luggage is staying in the freezer for a while just in case. Horrible vacation experience!!! Yuck!

The hotel picture advertised in the net was deceiving. The hotel looks good outside but once you go to the rooms, it was a nightmare. The room was damp moist , smelly, small. The bed looks very old, the bathroom is yucky. and no amenities provided. The elevator cannot hold on more than three people. Most of the tourist comes from asia, probably hongkong or china. I checked out immediately, did not last an hour and paid penalty fees

I was open in August, I have not been there since.
Depends what you mean by airport transport and from whom you are expecting it to be supplied.
By public transport (BART) you will be able to be at the airport by 0530.
By taxi you will be able to get there 24 hours a day.
For a third party shuttle company you should check their schedules with them.
And for a shuttle provided by the hotel you will need to check the details with them.
