Hotel Zephyr in San Francisco garners mixed reactions, with guests praising its prime location near the waterfront and its artsy, nautical decor that contributes to an engaging atmosphere. The hotel's service is often highlighted for its friendly staff, but experiences can vary. While some guests enjoy the quirky rooms and unique amenities like fire pits and games, others find the hotel overpriced, noting additional charges and outdated features. Cleanliness is generally well-regarded, despite some remarks about the small bathrooms.

We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. It has a funky, quirky , industrial theme to it which was a breath of fresh air compared to the usual drab decor of hotels in a similar price bracket. The room was a reasonable size, the bed was excellent-very comfortable. The bathroom was big enough and the shower was good. The decor was fun and everywhere was clean.

The location couldn't have been better-right on Fisherman's Wharf, an easy walk to the cable car/tram to get downtown and Golden Gate is an easy cycle. We would definitely stay agin. Just be aware of the extortionate parking charges -we paid $58.00/night!!!!

I stayed for 6 nights in a king room with balcony. The room was spacious and clean, bed very comfortable and facilities very good. I particularly appreciated the free water bottle provided on arrival and the drinking water stations for refilling - much better than bottled water. All staff members I encountered were friendly, helpful and welcoming.

This hotel has a different look than normal hotels. It is cool, inviting and fun! All of the staff were excellent. High five to the excellent service provided by housekeeping - great job! Front desk was always available and very helpful. Concierge was good, but not always present for assistance. Hotel is located about 3-5 minutes (walking) from Pier 39, where there is lots of fun, food and action. This is a good location to board hop on & hop off buses. Close to Ghiradelli Square and about 10 minute walk to Alcatrez cruise take off. Hotel also not to far from crooked street (15 minute walk). Hotel was very Covid friendly; clean and cared for the guest exceptionally. They are currently updating the rooms and that is needed; however, everything was welcoming and comfortable. The discount for IHOP is not offered as stated on-line, but IHOP staff were extremely friendly and does require proof of covid vacination (they checked every time we visited). We took the Big Bus Hop On Hop Off tour and the Alcatrez Cruise and both were exceptional. A must do. Although we did not visit the Muir Tour, we saw some gorgeous pictures from other travelers and plan to visit the next time we are in San Francisco. Overall we had a spectacular time at Hotel Zephyr and fun time in San Francisco as a whole! Great place to visit. We will return soon!

STRONG: Lobby, game room, room (generally)
POOR: Hotel exterior, corridors, cleanliness and consistency, details

Nautical concept is neighborhood appropriate and half the parts get there with decent execution. However, the parts they missed are noticeably deficient and makes the hotel feel dirty, poorly maintained in parts, or cheap - felt like an incomplete refresh / upgrade.

Location is good and configuration makes more sense for families, less so urban travelers looking for a memorable boutique hotel experience. Staff was fine, hotel just lacked in the areas that make it feel special. Some ideas nice in concept (ex: reusable bottles for guests to save plastic bottles for green purposes) but annoying in execution (not all rooms close to water machines for easy refill).

Needs more renovation dollar investment to upgrade hallways and higher cleanliness standards (which some may be fixed with newer, easier to maintain upgrades) - might be enough to bump the hotel quality up.

my family and I stayed here a few years ago when it opened and thought it was so cute! couldn't wait to come back. Finally did, and were really disappointed. The staff was rude, the room was in disrepair, and no one really cared. Seriously bummed about how we were treated. I came to check in and took out my phone to show the woman at reception my confirmation, and she immediately barked at me that I can't just show her my phone and why do people think they can just show their phone? Her name is Kat. I was confused about why I was being spoken to this way, having just arrived after a long drive, and innocently trying to check in. I tried to calm her down and gave her everything she needed, and asked a couple of questions about where to park, where to go, etc, to which she kept yelling "Do you need someone to carry your luggage?" Even though my questions had nothing to do with that. She really wasn't listening. I went to use the restroom in the lobby and there was no toilet paper in any of the stalls, so I tried to tell one of the other people working at reception and he too had no communication skills. Then when we got up to our room, there was peeling paint, rust over the tub, and a toilet fitted with parts the didn't seem to fit. Suddenly the cute and funky was looking sad and dirty. We were gone the whole next day and came back to a dirty room. I asked reception about housekeeping, and the same woman said that in an attempt to be green, they only clean every 3 days. I spoke to another person at reception the next day, and she said that wasn't true, but also wasn't very nice. I told her a few items looked like they needed repair, and she asked for a list. No one ever smiled, asked if they could help, or made any attempt to improve our stay.

I loved everything about this place. You could see the bay and Alcatraz from our room (which I requested), the food was great for breakfast in the camper to the restaurant/bar, and the service was wonderful. Here's a great tip: this hotel has just started offering free bike rentals. We thoroughly enjoyed a bike ride to and across the Golden State Bridge on a gorgeous day and it was wonderful! (Took a few hours because we stopped many times to take pics). Location is perfect within walking distance of the cable cars and biking to GGB. Parking is expensive but there is a much more reasonable parking in a garage just a block away (the valet can tell you where). The only bad part was that we had very noisy neighbors at 1:30 am but the hotel security addressed it immediately after I called the front desk. Fun games throughout the lobby and outside that I constantly saw people enjoying. My only negative was that there is no good place to put a big suitcase down in the room which was awkward so we just used the front foyer. I highly recommend this place for families and couples alike.

Stayed for 4 nights, great location right near Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf. Staff are friendly, rooms are a good size and great value for money. 5 minute walk to cable car, would recommend purchasing the 3 day Muni visitor pass on line can use on cable car, bus, and trams great way to get around the city

We had an upgraded room with a fantastic view of Alcatraz. The room itself was lovely, however the bathroom was terrible! You could literally be washing your hands sat on the loo and cleaning your feet in the shower, it was THAT small. All very clean and working. However when paying a lot extra for a room your would expect a half decent bathroom big enough for two normal sized humans! I fed this back to the Hotel with no response. The lessor priced rooms had much bigger bathrooms. We were right next to a noisy lift as well. Very disappointing!

Hi there, Thank you for the feedback and it looks like you had one of our best rooms too - no hotel at the Wharf has the same dramatic views of the Bay and Alcatraz as us. I apologize if the bathroom did not meet your expectations, they are comfortable for one person to use at time but to your point they are not meant to be shared at the same time. I do appreciate you choosing to stay with us and I hope the rest of your travels in the States went well. Tony

The hotel is located near Fisherman's Wharf and is walking distance to many attractions. When you first walk in, you are always greeted with a hello from all the employees. This is what sets this hotel apart from many larger chains. The rooms are decorated nicely, very nautical. Large soup and body wash so you don't have to request more daily. Private balcony if you choose a balcony room. Very clean rooms, lobby and outside area. There are 3 or 4 fire pits outside, a playroom with ping pong and a pool table. There is a water filling station in the courtyard so bring your own water bottle to fill. A special shout out to Kathy and Prince. You both made this stay much more personal and made us feel special. Thank you both for all your assistance in surprising our friend for her 40th bday. Hope to see you again Zephyr on our next SF trip.

I don't usually stay in the touristy areas but we had the kids and they wanted to be near a beach and we wanted someplace safe and this hotel fit the requirements. We loved this place. It has a game room that's always open- ping pong, pool, shuffleboard, etc. There's an enclosed outdoor area with multiple fire pits and a huge Connect 4. Our family met us at the hotel, we walked to Safeway and got deli food for dinner and we visited late into the night. I would definitely go back.
