The Taj Campton Place is a relatively small urban hotel located one block from Union Square in San Francisco. It features great service, well-appointed rooms and is home to the one-Michelin starred restaurant, Campton Place. I stayed at the hotel in late October and was in a Deluxe King Room (second lowest category). The room itself was small, but incredibly efficient with its layout. The bathroom, for example, had a nice separate soaking tub and generously-sized limestone shower despite limited space. The bedroom had a comfortable window seat (by the only window) and a large built-in wardrobe and minibar. Next to the king-sized bed was a desk and at the end of the bed was a small sofa. The design was fairly plain with neutral colors, but the designers did a great job of including everything you could want in a room despite the low square footage. The service was a highlight of the stay. While many hotels in the area are understaffed at the moment, you could not tell at the Taj Campton Place. Every staff member I interacted with was warm and helpful, and each interactions – whether it was room service, valet or front desk – went off without a hitch. There was a nice open-air gym on a higher floor that was set up for use (not sure if this was due to COVID or otherwise, but it was a great resource), but otherwise I had limited time to explore the other common areas. At the time of my visit, the restaurant had not reopened yet (which was disappointing as it is excellent). I was able to try to room service meals during my stay, and while they were delivered quickly, the overall quality was quite low – particularly for a luxury hotel. My assumption is that the kitchen does not have the same access to talent and ingredients that the hotel normally has, but wouldn't recommend enjoying room service during your stay. The location of the hotel is ideal if your goal is to be in Union Square. While that is not where I would recommend staying in SF, a lot of the city’s best hotels (St. Regis, Four Seasons) are clustered in this area. Overall, the Taj Campton Place is a great base from which to explore San Francisco. I might not recommend it if you are planning to spend time relaxing in the hotel due to the smaller size of the rooms and lack of pool, spa etc. For a jumping off point with easy access to Union Square and everything else SF has to offer – it is great!

Given that American Express partners with this hotel as a Fine Hotel and Dining experience, I was expecting a lot more. Hygiene: The hotel is very clean and I felt very safe. I think this is the only thing the hotel well. Room: The bedding was sparse -- one duvet, no top sheet? -- it feels so lean. It wasn't luxurious and I was very cold. The heat took forever to warm the room. Dining: I received $30 credit for breakfast, but no one on the room service line could help me with the menu (I have an allergy and no one could tell me what on the menu was accessible). So I ended up eating berries and bananas with coffee and orange juice -- all totaling $50. I understand room service is expensive, but this feels like price gauging. Room Service: When my room was cleaned, everything that I had in the room was touched. My suitcase was moved to a location I didn't want it to be moved, everything in the bathroom was moved and reorganized. My clothes hanging on the desk chair were folded and put on the large linen chair and everything on the desk was touched, reorganized. This felt like the service was too much - as if all my stuff had been touched, gone through, and rearranged for no reason. Entrance: I wasn't warned that if I come back to the hotel after a certain hour, I would need my hotel card ready to get into the actual building. I arrived back at 11pm and I didn't have my card ready - which took some time to find in my bag. The front desk individual just sat there, didn't help me, and let me stand searching my bag outside. If the area is so unsafe that the hotel front door has to be locked, why not share the process for how to get back into the building when I check in so I am prepared when I go out and come back? Overall I found this hotel to be way too expensive and the service to be subpar. I would not recommend to a friend and will be offering feedback to American Express.

Excellent all around. Especially so in a time where places are understaffed and the service/hospitality industry's standards seem to be lowering, this was a breath of fresh air. Beautiful rooms, warm and welcoming staff.

The Taj Campton is perfectly located just off Union Square. It was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Our room on the 12th floor was quiet and elegant. The staff were all very gracious. This hotel made our trip to San Francisco just perfect!

Very pleased with this boutique hotel. It’s in the center of the city, across from the Hyatt. The staff was super friendly and the breakfast and bartender was great! The rooms were a nice size, despite being in the center we didn’t hear any noise with the windows closed. The downside is their wasn’t much of a view. We didn’t use the gym, as we walked all over this hilly city so that provided much of a work out.
