Hotel Spero garners appreciation from many guests for its inviting atmosphere, historic charm, and modern amenities. Reviewers consistently praise the hotel's clean and spacious rooms, though a few note the bathrooms can feel cramped. The staff's friendly and accommodating nature stands out, despite occasional slow service.
While some guests mention unexpected fees, the hotel's excellent location near Union Square and overall cleanliness contribute to its perceived value. However, travelers should be aware that there might be some noise due to its central location.

Detailed Reviews
Came here for a relaxing, weekend birthday getaway. Did not know what to expect as Hotel Spero is a smaller, boutique hotel. We were very happy with our stay. The decor of the hotel is very chic, warm and inviting. The room was well decorated and they even have aromatherapy scents to choose from to individually scent your room. The front desk accommodated an early check in and even upgraded to a king size bed. The concierge assisted with a hop on, hop off tour and even offered a lessor advertised fee. He also recommended a great breakfast diner around the corner. The only negative was that we thought the beds were a little too firm for our liking. Nevertheless we would definitely come back again.

Very first time satuing at the Hotel Spero. Very unique hidden spot on the outskirts of union square. The entrance is like walking into a historic Italian museum. The decor is beautiful and one of a kind. I've never stayed in such a place. The bellman was right there to welcome us and help with luggage.
The front desk staff was knowledgeable and very transparent about how our room keys would work. We were given a welcome amenity bag upon arrival with a reusable flask for drinking water and $10 to use at the inside cafe. The woman who checked us in was attentive and polite.
We checked into a cityview king room on the 16th floor. Looking from the outside we did t know the place was so tall. Overall perfect stay and we will be back again

Hotel Spero is the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at in San Francisco. I absolutely loved it. I stayed for 3 nights in December. It's a gorgeous hotel, in the perfect location just a short walk from union square, and the staff are so nice. Most importantly, I really appreciated how clean and safe it was to abide by covid-19 regulations. I felt very safe while they had sanitizing stations, you had to social distance inside the hotel, and you had to wear a mask in the public areas. They had holiday decorations all over the lobby which was so pretty! My room was so nice, spacious, and the bathroom lighting was AMAZING which is so rare to have in a hotel. I stayed in the Serenity Suite which also has a beautiful view of the city and it was very quiet. There is also a very convenient parking garage right next door if you plan to bring your car with you, although it's not apart of the hotel, it might as well could have been. It made it so easy to come and go as we pleased! I 100% recommend this hotel to anyone who plans to travel to San Francisco! It made my trip to San Francisco a wonderful trip. It will not disappoint.

My first experience with this hotel was not pleasant at all. The service was horrible, the staff was unfriendly, and they made me feel like they didn't care about something that I forgot in the room by not taking any action to try to find it. After writing honest review and giving them a 1 star, the manager of this hotel reached out to me and made a great effort in trying to make it better. She found the boots I accidently left in the room and had them delivered to my house. I really appreciated that and decided to give them a second chance. Note that I paid $700 for the room the first time and they put me in small corner room by the elevator. The window looking into the building. This time I was upgraded to a suite (she said it was a king luxury suite but it was only their serenity suite) which was not much different besides having a small living room attached and a bigger bathroom which only had one robe and a couple towels in the bathroom. Knowing that this room sleeps 4 people you would think that there would be at least 2 robes and more towels. All the windows looked out to the next door building which felt super claustrophobic. The mini fridge was located in the nightstand by the left side of the bed which made vibrating noise all night. Super annoying. All the amenities were pretty much the same. Btw, the beds are super uncomfortable. I would have thought that the manager herself would have introduced herself to me or left me a note in the room making sure that my stay was better but none of that happened. I felt like my experience there was very similar to the first time accept my room was bigger and the front desk staff was a little friendlier this time. I will not come back to this hotel and do not recommend this hotel to anybody that wants to have more than average experience which paying ridiculous amounts of money for their stay. There are other hotels in san francisco that will give you more for your buck.

Stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. The area is surrounded by homeless people many of whom have obvious mental health issues. Looking out my window at night there were many of them sleeping on the footpath directly opposite my room. When the bins were put out during the night the homeless people ere scavenging through them even scraping cheese of the bottom of a pizza box. Going out they were all about approaching you as you entered and left the local grocery store. The hotel even had security officers at the front door in the evening and during the night. I would say this is more suited to business travellers than tourists especially solo female tourists like myself.
There was a non-negotiable amenity charge of $29.99 per night. This was for tea and coffee which was available in the foyer in the morning and water (none of which are stocked or available in the room). It also allowed you access to the gym. I was not interested in any of these amenities yet still had to pay. Surely this should be included in the basic price.
I realise that there is not much the hotel can do about the homeless situation but maybe reviews can be forwarded to the elected representatives of the city to improve the situation.

Response from PearlTOfficial, Guest Relations Manager at Hotel Spero
Responded 25 Feb 2020
Stuckintheusa, thank you for your review on your San Francisco visit and sharing your thoughts on your stay with us. We are sorry about your concern of the neighborhood and thus affecting your experience with our hotel. Like many other brand name as well as boutique hotels in the same block as our hotel, we are located two blocks away from Union Square and Downtown. We do have security on-site and often advice our guests to be mindful of their surrounding as they explore the city, as San Francisco is unfortunately known to have issues with homelessness and heavy traffic. Like most hotels in the area, our amenities fee includes a lot of value for our guests, giving them access to high speed wifi, welcome gift at check in, Hotel Spero water bottle, access to water station in lobby, choice of personalized room scent, 24-hour access to the fitness center, freshly brewed coffee and tea in the lobby from 5:30 am-10:00 am, unlimited access to co-working space and business center use for printing and scanning. $10 coupon per stay at Jasper's Corner Tap & Kitchen. We are constantly adding to the benefits. We sincerely hope we can welcome you again at our beloved hotel. Thank you again for the time you took to share your comments with us.

If you are looking for a classic hotel with elegance cuteness and style this is the hotel. I really appreciated the customer service I received it was exceptional. The lobby and rooms are very well decorated. The hand sanitizing station and filtered water available for guests was a big plus!!

My husband and I were both incredibly disappointed about the quality of Hotel Spero's customer service. We are both small business owners and have stayed at numerous hotels in San Francisco over the years and have never had difficulty like we did yesterday which resulted in us having to leave San Francisco and come back to Napa. We were there trying to celebrate our 23rd wedding anniversary with a two night stay there.
Sadly, we arrived at Hotel Spero at 5:30pm only to find that the hotel had double booked our room and the One Bedroom Suite we had booked and had CONFIRMATION for was occupied … Please note that there was also no parking in the designated lot and we were left to “just go find something”. The gentleman at the desk was not apologetic nor did he really make any attempts to address the issue. We tried to be flexible as this was a special occasion for us and we were excited to celebrate together; however, after they downgraded us into what did not look like a suite at all, we went up there with all our stuff only to find that the room appeared occupied and was UNCLEANED (bed unmade, trash all around)! We then went back down to the hotel lobby and asked for assistance only to have a manager come out after waiting 20-25 minutes who told us that our only option was to wait for them to clean a room for us and that they could not give us the room we had originally booked. She made no attempts to make it “right” other than to say she would waive the $20 upgrade fee for the next night. Had she been apologetic or made any attempts to see the error on the hotels part we would have felt a little better, but given the situation we felt we had no other option but to leave.
Lastly, just to say something positive, the gentleman who indicated he was Security at the front was very helpful in getting our bags unloaded onto the bell cart and LOADED again and was very empathetic and kind!
Sadly, I would not recommend staying at this hotel given that there are so many other options in San Francisco!

The room was so small and outdated. The hotel is surrounded by homeless people and there is no parking garage. The room did not seen thoroughly cleaned. The mini fridge needed to be wiped down and the bathroom door knobs and light switches did too. The staff was nice, but for the price and location it’s not worth it.

We arrived super early, and jet lagged; I’d asked if by chance we could have an early check in. Front desk person checked and saw a room was available at 9:30 am (!) and allowed us to check in so we could regroup before apartment hunting! That made all the difference in the world! Lovely boutique hotel and convenient, though borders very sketchy Tenderloin area, which I understand is reffered to as “Tenderknob”...not an area to walk around, but good for ride sharing, etc... Restaurant is limited on healthy and good food, but adeequate for breakfast, or sandwiches. (Vegan and fresher offerings would be nice). 4 star for area and lack of coffee maker offered in room. Had to go down 15 floors to grab a cup, and would be nice if I could make my own for me and family member to stay in room.

We were initially given keys to a room that was located next to the elevator. When asked to switch because of noise sensitivity I was given a queen room when we paid for king. The room was very small. No walking space. I hit my knee on the corner of furniture trying to squeeze by. It’s by far the smallest room I’ve ever stayed at.
We were not pleased. Especially since promised a king bed with larger room when booking. No action was taken.

Would recommend Uber or Lyft. No shuttle that I am aware of.
Room was quiet during my stay as well.
