We've stayed at this wonderful B&B twice in the past two years, and hope to be back soon! The people are always super nice, the breakfast is great, and the afternoon wine and cheese is a nice touch. Not to mention, we love the North Beach location - tons of great Italian restaurants around and City Lights bookstore, etc. ....

We found this wonderful place on Select Registry & this has changed our views of how we will travel in the future! We were always Marriott travelers but will continue to look for Select Inns for our vacation travels. We had made reservations for one night & decided at the last minute to try & stay in the city for...

Thank You for taking the time to write us a great review and mentioning “Select Registry” a group of what we consider the best Inn’s in the United States and Canada. It was a pleasure having you as our guests. Thank You! Maria, Dan and the staff at the Washington Square Inn.

My husband and I recently traveled alone for a wedding in San Francisco. We had stayed at the WSI several times over the years and it remains one of our favorites. The inn is clean, warm and always has an interesting clientele. The breakfast and afternoon wine/cheese are a special treat. The only negative is if you are wanting to...

Thank you for your comments, if you are a light sleeper we recommend our rooms that our located facing the light well away from the street. Even though we are on the quiet side of Washington Square Park there is a lot of activity that generally quiets down in the evening. You can also make sure the double insulated windows...

After staying in the Washington Square Inn for 4 nights last fall, we've found our "home" whenever we return to the San Francisco area. The location near Coit Tower in North Beach's Little Italy neighborhood is convenient by foot to ristorantes, galleries, entertainment venues and by car to the Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito and wine country. The rooms are well...

Our daughter lives nearby. My wife and had noticed the inn on a previous visit. To avoid a cramped apartment we recently stayed here. It's quite nice and homey. The rooms tend toward small, as do the bathrooms, but that's not uncommon for older properties. We found everything about our three nights to be very agreeable. The staff if friendly...

My wife and I were returning from Hawaii and needed to overnight in SF so we chose this inn from the "Unique Inns" website. We weren't familiar with the North Beach neighborhood and were really pleased to discover it. This is a quintessential "Small Inn" with only 15 rooms so those looking for BIG HOTEL amenities should move on however...

Being from Australia, we were not familiar with the city and were very pleased with our choice of hotel. We stayed at the Inn for 5 days and found it to be so much better than the larger impersonal hotels. Location is excellent, close to many fine restaurants, and within easy walking distance of Fisherman's Wharf, Ferry Terminal and Market...

Very nice B & B type inn. Great location for a quick sight seeing stop. Comfortable beds in nice rooms. The rooms we stayed in (2 and 10) were on the smaller side, but perfect for a short stay or if you don't plan to spend a lot of time in the room. Parlor reception area is very homey. Breakfast...

We spent just two nights in San Francisco and had a fabulous time in no small part because we stayed at the Washington Square Inn. We arrived early before our room was ready so they took our bags in the lobby and they were waiting for us in our room when we got back several hours later. The location right...

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
