This was our third stay at Honua Kai. We returned for the third time since our first two stays in 2020 and 2021 we're good. This time it was quite a let down. There was construction going on right in front of our ocean view suite. From 8am to 2pm, the workers in their huge cranes created quite a bit of noise. Not the Hawaii tranquility that we came for and paid through the nose to stay at an ocean view suite. It also did not appear as work that was super time critical to do right during the Thanksgiving busy season. The suite we stayed in was showing its age. The carpet was stained in many places. The kitchen utensils were quite worn out. The lounge chairs were coming apart. Overall it seemed like the management did not care about providing a good experience. We raised a few issues to them, but got a boilerplate email back. After that we did not try again. It was clear that they had zero motivation to address our issues. This was a distinct change from our last two stays, where it felt like the management was earnest in making sure you got a good experience. Given the premium you have to pay for Thanksgiving weekend as well as things like ocean views etc, this was a big let down. Properties next to Honua Kai (Westin Nanea) seem much more better managed and worth your hard earned dollars.

Our room was clean, our top priority, and quiet. The view off the balcony was impressive despite being on the mountainside. Overall, the grounds were well maintained. The staff was friendly and helpful. The beauty was unsurpassed.

Unfortunately the Honua Kai is no longer any where near the resort it used to be. Carpets in common areas need replacing, the rooms are in need of refurbishment and there are numerous small issues that need addressing (examples: lamps with faulty light switches, properly stocked kitchens and housekeeping quality control). When one considers the rates that this resort charges, be it directly or through 3rd party vacation rentals, you can get much better quality at other condo style resorts on this part of Maui. Oh, and one more thing, pretty much half of the underground parking is unavailable at the Hokulani Tower due to numerous structural jack screws holding up the center portion of tower, this kind of tells you about the attention to detail from the beginning. (I would hate to be an owner of one of these units as they’ve just thrown money into a pit. Make your own conclusions from that as you wish.)

It’s our first morning here and we are sitting on the deck looking at the ocean but to the sound of a jack hammer next door. We weren’t informed of the construction when booking. Big disappointment to the start of our 25th anniversary vacation.

Buyer beware! Hawaii is expensive. It's a given. Costco travel packages to Hawaii will entice you to save money by purchasing their flight/car/hotel packages. Runnnnn! I purchased a Maui package - Hawaiian Air, Alamo car, Honua Kai Resort & Spa. Pros: it's Hawaii! We were given a condo (so we could make breakfast and lunch). washer/dryer in the rooms. Dukes Restaurant (yum). Fruity drinks by the pools ($14-25). Lovely spa. Little market/deli onsite (sandwiches $15-20) and well-stocked gift shop. Bellmen - super helpful. What could go wrong? Cons: Flight was ok, except we got the worst seats on the plane (row 15). No windows, no leg room=claustrophobia for 5.5 hours. I had made the reservations 6 months in advance and asked to have adjoining rooms with my daughter, son in law and 5 year old granddaughter. They put us on different floors (making it hard to coordinate logistics and passing a 5 year old back and forth), then they changed my room the next night (same floor, down the hall). The rooms were beyond disappointing as they were nothing like the photos. These were evidently time share condos that had seen a LOT of wear and tear. Carpets were old and filthy inside and in the halls. Furniture dirty and threadbare. Comforters had small blood (?) spots on them that seemed to increase during our stay. Dishwasher smelled like something had died in it. Cockroaches in the bathroom and under the sink. The "ocean view" room - that we paid extra for - gave us a little glimpse of the ocean if we stood just so on the deck. No housekeeping services for 8 days. We were assigned the same crappy seats for the trip home, and when we tried to change them Hawaiian air said they could not help us because we had “used a third party travel company”. Calling Costco Travel to sort it out was a 2 hour hold. The day before our flight, when we could check in, we were assigned seats all over the plane - including putting our 5 year old in a seat 2 rows away from her mom. Fortunately, once we got to the airport the Hawaiian Air guest services person moved us to two rows so kiddo could be next to a parent. Unfortunately, the cons (and stress) overshadowed the pros and we won't be using Costco Travel again.

I kinda want to give a 4if not less for pool side service but I know how hard staffing is my only complaint is by the pool it’s like so hard to get service we were told Bradley was in charge of our side and Every time Bradley walked by he ignored you even if you waved at him so I had go get our own drinks which is fine I just thought it was super rude to ignore us at least tell us you will be right back oh and the girl that was helping him deliver his drinks wouldn’t even let him know we wanted to order so he just he misses out on tips and we never ordered food because of it! Kudos to the bartenders! They go above and beyond I believe they have to pick up the slack for laziness!More

We reserved Konea Tower room 214 through Maui Resort Rentals for the entire month of October 2022. This was a beautiful 1 bedroom unit in a great location. The large lanai has a view of the mountains. The room was far enough away from the resort pools to avoid any noise coming from them while being literally a 2 minute walk to Kanapali Beach. There is a beautiful waterfall fountain just outside the unit and the sounds are very relaxing. This unit has a full sized kitchen and is fully equipped. The room has a very comfortable King size bed and a Queen size pull out sofa. There is a flat screen TV in the living room as well as in the bedroom. Most days we cooked our own food on the induction stove top and using the convection oven. There is also a stackable washer and dryer, iron and ironing board in the unit. Whenever we needed anything, Maui Resort Rentals was able to supply it for us within the hour (garbage liners, dishwasher detergent, Dawn dish detergent and scrubber sponges, paper towels, Kleenex tissues, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and hand washing soap). During our month-long stay we learned a lot by talking with other renters. 1. Units at Honua Kai are managed by different Resort Rental Companies (OutRigger, Maui Resort Rentals and others). 2. This unit is managed by Maui Resort Rentals. This is important because MRR brings the supplies directly to the room while the others make you pick up your supplies from the front desk. 3. MRR also provides use of the towel machines located all around the Resort. The towel machines provide towels for use at the beach and pools so you don't need to bring any towels from the room. OutRigger makes you bring towels from the room or you can pick them up from the front desk. 4. Every Wed there is an art walk at the resort where you can purchase gifts. 5. BBQ grills do not need to be reserved, use when you want to grill something, cleaning when you are done. We would recommend unit Honua Kai Konea tower room 214 to anyone interested in having a wonderful time in Maui.

The room was nice, top floor. That was the extent of nice. We have a beaten up saucier to cook with and that was it. It appears the owners do not cook, thus nothing to cook with… view was great. Now for the pools. They all were filthy. Cloudy and sandy. First thing in the morning the pools were filthy, the filters must not work well. Sand covered the stairs and bottom of all the pools. By 9 am the pools are filled with kids throwing balls and using very large flotation toys. The pool deck has very little shade, so get their early. The umbrellas don’t shade you. There are no side tables on the deck, so everything goes on the ground. The lounge chairs have bird poop on them and because they don’t clean (they blow all the debris into the bushes) there are flies. The restrooms are hidden and there are only two of them for the hundreds of adults and children in using the pools. There is one “adult” pool, but it’s right above a kiddie pool. Not all babies had swim diapers on. I understand that pools attract kids, and kids and adults can be loud, but the filthiness and lack of shade and chairs made for a very disappointing experience.

For folks that have highly rated this resort, I can only assume it is because they have not stayed at a comparable class hotel. The Honua Kai praises itself as a luxury resort, and I think they've adopted a very loose definition of luxury. First, arrival! We arrive at the hotel. There's clearly some construction happening out front, but all good. The valet greets us with "Hi! Do you have an AirBNB?" We don't - weird greeting, but still, whatevs - we're not in a nitpicky service phase at this point. Check in is fairly seamless. The view upon entry is beautiful, with a view straight out to the ocean. We check into our room and are pleasantly surprised that it has a full kitchen - nice perk! The decor and set up of the room is not extraordinary but overall very comfortable and convenient. Here's when the wheels start to fall off. No maid or cleaning service. If I'm trying to ration towels, I'm going to argue I'm not at a luxury resort. That was disappointing, and an inconvenience to request items when we had a week long stay. Next up, pool time! If you have dreams of lounging pleasantly in a crystal clear oasis, wipe those plans from your mind. The pool boasted an impressive level of opacity. In fact, hit the beach if you're looking for clear blue water. Then, the crowds. Even with multiple pool options, the seating and space at the pools could not support a resort of this size. Get there bright and early! And lastly, in an effort to get some semblance of relaxation by the pool, we posted up early one morning facing the beach. It was no more than 15 minutes before hotel maintenance staff found it necessary to literally park their pick up truck directly in our line of sight and begin sawing wood not 20 feet away from us. Again, poolside. Why they couldn't do that during non-peak time (i.e. not 10am on a Friday), or even, measure and saw away from the pool area, is beyond me. But hey, it's a luxury resort, right? And don't even think about getting poolside drinks or food service. Lastly, departing. Unfortunately, my husband is known for losing track of things and on this trip he happened to leave his iPad in the room. Once we returned home, he reached out to the hotel and behold! iPad found! Should be easy from here right? Not. We emailed a prepaid shipping label as instructed expecting the item would be sent back. But after the tracking kept noting it hadn't been shipped, reaching out to the hotel FIVE times, including escalating to resort management, the iPad has never been returned. I'm sure some staff member is happily enjoying an ipad now. Luxury. If we had booked this resort with the knowledge that it was a lower class, we wouldn't have been nearly as disappointed. But frankly, we were fortunate enough that we had friends staying at the nearby Westin and began spending our time over there. The service, amenities, and service FAR surpassed this resort. And lesson learned on our part, we should have opted to go with a brand with the consistency of experience like a Westin (which is saying a lot, I mean, it's a Westin). All in all, opt for one of the neighboring Westin resorts, or another resort entirely. Did not get our money's worth at this resort and in hindsight would have happily paid another couple hundred $ a night for a better experience.

The Honua Kai Resort was amazing and the views were breathtaking. Our room was very quiet, and we enjoyed every minute of our stay in the pools, on the beach or taking in the beautiful landscaping.
