We stayed for one week at Kamaole Nalu 603. The highlights were: the beachfront location, hearing the waves crashing 24-7, nice pool, the adjacent swimming beach where we saw turtles every day, and easy access to shops, restaurants, other beach parks, etc. Beds were very comfortable, towels were nice and there was room to put our things. If you are looking for a place to crash and spend a lot of time exploring the island, this could be your place. Cons: If you are seeking privacy, this is not the place to stay. All lanais have a great view of the ocean. However, many lanais are in full view of each other and they are situated right next to the bedroom of the unit next door. Since there is no AC, everyone had heir windows open in order for the breeze to cool their units. We could see into the unit next door and could hear voices and life noises late at night and early in the morning. (Nobody was being rude, just enjoying their vacations.) With windows open, the area around the elevator was especially noisy, with people using their outside voices. The unit is showing its age and could use a deep cleaning. The kitchen is poorly equipped with barely room for one person to move around. If you plan to cook, bring your own spices, etc. There was salt, pepper, and Johnny's. The preparation for our arrival seemed incomplete. For example, the dishwasher from the previous guests had not been emptied and some dishes were still dirty. We chose to go with a local management company vs. an internet service this time. We have stayed at four other rentals in the Kihei area and Kamaole Nalu was by far the most expensive. We do understand that the pandemic has caused inflation, etc. but comparing apples to apples, this was not a good value.

Room Tip: Higher number units (106-606) are closest to the beach. 101-601 are closest to the street.

We stayed at Kamaole Nalu #501 for two weeks in January 2022. The building is privately owned condos which have managed vacation rentals from various agents. We booked through Maui Roost, a local property management company on Maui. Maui Roost was a pleasure to deal with and everything was up front and well-explained. They seem to take a personal interest in the properties they represent, and we met Julie, the owner of Maui Roost the day we checked in. She was dropping some things off at the unit and thought we’d be checking in later, so it was just coincidence. The building: this property is older and while it is kept up, it’s clear that they have not updated certain things and those things are probably regulated by the HOA to keep the outward appearance uniform, so individual owners cannot make upgrades if they want (just a guess). The biggest example are the windows. They are old glass flapper-slat type windows with beaten-up screens that fit poorly and look old. All units appear to have these so I’m sure it’s not something that can be fixed unless they replace them all in the entire building. As advertised, there is no “built-in” A/C allowed in the building, so our condo had a portable standing floor unit, which we never used anyway as we enjoy open windows and fresh air. In January this isn’t a problem because it’s cool enough at night to sleep comfortably. Our unit was nice enough for us, but it hasn’t been updated like some of the others in the building. I thought the price was very fair given the lack of updates, but if you’re picky about newer appliances and fixtures etc., you’re going to have to pay more to find those. There were ample kitchen/dining items such as pots, pans, utensils, etc., and even some consumables like plastic bags, foil, dish & dishwasher soap, and even some cooking staples like olive oil, etc. Our unit, #501, was the rearmost unit (closest to street) as are all the x01 units. The x06 units are the end units closest to the ocean. Even being at the “back”, 501 has a great view of the ocean and we watched whale activity easily every day from our balcony. The only drawback to being further back is the noise from the main road. During the day and evening it’s loud, but by 9PM or so it starts to quiet down, and we slept with the windows open every night, and but for the occasional loud car there was no noise except the waves crashing onto Kamaole II beach! You can only hear the ocean from the “master” on the south side of the unit; the other room only experiences road noise, and this will be the case in every unit in this building due to its layout and construction. Parking issues have been noted in other reviews, and the spots are narrow but we had no problem with a 4-door Jeep Wrangler. A full-size SUV would be difficult to park here. The sunset can be seen from the balcony, and during winter months it's not at the edge of your viewing angles. I suspect that in summer when the sun sets further to the NW, it may be at the edge of what you can see, or not be viewable from the balcony. The sunsets from the common grassy area oceanfront are unbeatable! We’ve been to the 4 main Hawaiian islands and stayed on Maui 3 times; 2 in Ka’anapali, and this stay in Kihei. I fly for an airline and have stayed in Kihei many times on layovers. I can attest that the sunsets in Kihei are some of the best in all of Hawaii! They are unobstructed by Lanai like they are on the west side of Maui! On our trip we saw FIVE green flashes from our condo’s grassy area next to the ocean! There are very few places in Kihei that are right on the ocean, most are across the main road. The location of this property in Kihei is also one of the best (at least for us, YMMV) in terms of convenience. Walking distance to tons of restaurants and stores, a big ABC store across the street, and groceries nearby by car. And the beaches! Located between Kamaole I and Kamaole II and you can walk to either along the shore across the neighboring condos property (a legal public right-of-way access). Kamaole I is huge and you can always find a place to spend the day without being on top of other beachgoers. Kamaole II is a bit closer walk, and is narrower, but even less people. Rooms: Master is on the south side. Lots of sun exposure during the day so it can get warm. Shower and toilet in a “water closet” with a door for privacy, adequate sized but not huge. Queen bed. One dresser and two nightstands, could really use a bigger dresser, though. Large closet. Sink area is along entrance to room and open to room. Second BR is on north side of unit. Noisy from street during the day. One double bed and one twin; poor arrangement for two couple traveling together but I understand why most, if not all units in this building, do this, for families with multiple kids who need more beds. Same shower/toilet arrangement as master, but very small space. Same sink arrangement as master. One larger dresser and one nightstand between the beds. Same closet as master. Miscellaneous: There were 3 sets of snorkel gear which we didn’t use as we don’t snorkel well! There were several boogie boards. There were 4 very nice Tommy Bahama beach chairs and another just so-so chair. The beach umbrella was a bit small, and I’d recommend renting one of the nice big 8-foot Tommy Bahama ones from the guy in the kiosk in front of Moose McGillicuddy’s down the street ($6/day or $27/week!). The unit had a Roku TV with cable, and good internet with wi-fi. All in all, we really liked Kamaole Nalu #501 and would stay again. Maui Roost was great to deal with and I wouldn’t hesitate to do business with them again! The unit is a bit dated as are some aspects of the entire building, but for what you get for the cost it’s a great deal IMO and nothing was a deal-breaker for us. Aloha!

We were put in room 402 after our original rental (Maui Banyan) was inaccessible. The room was small, narrow, dated and because there is no AC the windows must be open and the floors were dirty. The noise outside, with open windows, was awful. tree trimming at 5:00am, garbage trucks, remodeling with power tools next door, grass cutting and people talking. The kitchen is so narrow the dishwasher door can not be opened all the way. All the wiring for cable, TV, wifi and whatever else are in plain site while sitting on couch- so that is what you look at. The bathrooms are small. there are no smoke detectors - only the hole on the ceiling where they should be, the dry er (which is on top of the washer with controls out of site) vents into a tray with water on top of the dryer, the overhead light in the master sink area flickers so back you can't use it.

since this property is privately owned condos, the quality of each unit can be totally different depending on what maintenance, upgrades and redecorating the owner does. Several units that we have stayed in were nice, but all could have used a bit of TLC, especially for the rates that are being charged. The property management company is very efficient, but their housekeeping employees could do a better job of thorough cleaning when a customer checks out

This resort is located on the beach side of S. Kihei Rd. which eliminates crossing the street to get to the beach. Stores and restaurants are nearby. We stayed in Unit 104 on the ground floor, providing less privacy than the upper floors. This unit is close to the elevator, so we could often hear people talking as they waited for or came out of the elevator. Unit 104 is somewhat outdated and worn but plenty comfortable, but it has no A/C. It does have ceiling fans to circulate the air. There were flat screen TVs - one in the living area and one in each bedroom. Kitchen supplies and equipment often required us to be creative - an example: using a baking sheet for a pan lid. The only cooking supplies were: salt and pepper, a starter pouch of coffee and sugar packets, so renters will need to purchase the basics for cooking meals. The unit did provide 4 nice beach chairs and 4 beach towels. And, there is a space near the stored paddle boards where shared beach equipment can be used by visitors. We used the boogie boards. and our young granddaughter enjoyed the plastic beach toys. Being between two beaches, Kam 1 and 2, was a definite asset of this property. The property manager maintained the pool, the bbq area, and the lounge chairs on a daily basis, making the outside areas quite pleasant. If you are looking for a high-end resort, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a good beach location with a family-friendly atmosphere, this could be a good option.

We stayed in unit 501. All units are rented through two different agencies, and they can also be found on VRBO, AIRBNB, etc. Unit 501 is clean, updated and has all the essentials + beach gear required(chairs/cooler/parasol/toys,etc.) Great view of beach(KAM II) and Haleakala from lanai. 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms - one room has a double and single and the other a queen, NO A/C, but it was not an issue for us(end of June first week of July) as tradewinds + supplied fans + ceiling fans kept unit comfortable. Building location is great, right on the beach - no street to cross. Parking is a little tight(width wise) but always found a spot to park. There's grill you can use downstairs for BBQ, a pool and grocery carts located next to elevator(which could use an upgrade) Our only issue is the excessive noise level, as windows need to remain open(no a/c) and units (x01) are located closest to road you get lots of noise coming in. I would strongly recommend renting beach front units(x01 or x02) as I would imagine these get substantially less noise. Please read JUNE 2016 unit 301 review from Nahole as it is very accurate and provides more info on surrounding area.

Stayed at the Nalu for a week in August 2018 with our two adult children. It came highly recommended by friends of ours who go every year. The problem with our stay was not with the resort in general as the location cannot be beat being right on the beach and walking distance to restaurants, liquor stores, etc. The problem was specific to suite 403. Please note that each suite is privately owned but rented out through Alii Resorts. Many of the suites have been upgraded but not 403. We don't mind old/not upgraded as long as it is clean. Unfortunately that was not the case for unit 403. Nothing short of disgusting between rotten baseboards, mold, general filth, toilet lid falling off, etc. Old and ineffective ceiling fans in the bedrooms are unforgivable. Alii and the owner should be ashamed of themselves. A good cleaning, a little paint and caulking, and a couple of new fans would be all that it would take to make it reasonable. Hopefully this review leads to 403 being empty until Alii and the owner upgrade it so nobody else has to suffer. Will post some pictures as evidence. Stay at the Nalu just not this disgusting suite.

It is very centrally located and across the street is a general store, shops for renting bikes, snorkels, boogie board, paddle boards etc, all at reasonable rates. 10 min drive to Safeway for groceries, just about died when the bill came to over 400 US and we didn’t buy anything over the top for a family of four. BTW 400 + US =650CDN so not cheap. Condo was clean, and smaller than pictures made it look. Two bedroom (rm 303) two bath it served us fine. Biggest complaint it is super noisy. Like 5am to 6am noisy, trucks, garbage, deliveries, road noise! If your unit is closer to ocean it might be better. We had no a/c so had to op n windows for air. People would stand out on pathways talking. Property is kept well, elevator eh, each room does have an ocean view which we loved , great beach access and good snorkeling, turtles very visible between 3:30 and 4:30 right out front! We loved watching them. Our unit needs new pots and pans, maybe a good painting of the two bed room, cable in both bedrooms didn’t work. Me being a smoker hated the non smoking policy. Other guests could be very noisy and drunk and loud.

We just recently stayed in unit 504. We saw some reviews that were less than good yet we really enjoyed this suite! It is an older building but has had a lot of upgrades. The unit came with spices, and cleaning supplies (garbage bags, dish soap, laundry soap) which others in this building did not. (stayed in other units previously) There are 2 things that weren't so great but still livable. The sliding doors to the balcony are really sticky and come off the tracks so you have to lift them up to slide them open. I tried cleaning the tracks, and it is past that point. Also, the bed in the 'master' bedroom was tired. It needs to be replaced. People that like soft beds would like it though. Overall, you CANNOT beat the view from the lanai. It is worth it just for that. The unit has been upgraded recently and has been well looked after. I would highly recommend this unit! We really enjoyed it!

This is located between two beaches and great location with lots of fishes and turtle around there. We saw around five or six different types of fishes and giant turtles and baby turtle. They can be found near rocky area in waters - right in front yard!! Beaches have very fine sand - so it does not hurt as much and also easily removed with spray-shower before entering the apartment. Our apartment also had beach chairs (3) and beach towels (4) for us. Apartment needs good remodel - hence one less star in rating. We were in #404. Also, first day, elevator broke for about half a day. Patio door and wall are all glass - so it gives very good view of the beach and ocean. We can see and hear ocean from Master bedroom. Host at the apartment - Caren - was a nice lady and give us some tips for sightseeing.
