Idyllic beautifully kept oasis with private waterfall and pool! Arrived in dark to the roar of tree frogs! Stayed 2 nights in 2 outdoor cabanas which were clean, secure and comfortable . Can confirm hammocks fine for all shapes and ages. Kitchen well stocked and other guests friendly and interesting. Loved the eco footprint and ethos. Priceless experience with teens. So much to do and see around the area.
If you like camping and being out in nature this place is great! The views from the house and property are amazing and besides the very few other people that stayed there and the staff of course it was a very private relaxing place to be. We also had access to a private waterfall which was a great bonus for our stay. The staff was excellent and extremely helpful as well as easy to reach if needed. Would definitely recommend.
a nice guesthouse a little bit remote, everything proper be prepared for some "jungle sound", especially from the birds :-) we liked the shared bathroom & kitchen like in a hostel (but don't forget to buy something to eat in advance)
We had a wonderful experience staying at the Hamakua Guest House! We loved the outdoor shower, dining areas, balcony with views of the sun setting over the ocean, and the two unique sleeping accommodations. We stayed one night in the upstairs room and one night in the Camping Cabana.
Wasn’t expecting that it’s gonna be such a unique place! Atmosphere, location, idea - excellent! If you want to feel real Hawai’i - that’s place to stay! Was kinda difficult to find at the first time, but use Google Maps app, it takes you right there!
We had an amazing stay at this eco conscience guesthouse! If you want all the modern amenities of a high end hotel though, you may not enjoy the closeness of the rainforest and may not appreciate being off the grid. It was great feeling submerged in the rainforest and hearing all the noises of nature at night. I love that they are off the grid and I did not feel it was a sacrifice. They have Wi-Fi! We were there with friends, another couple (all in our 50's & 60's), and stayed in the guesthouse (not the cabana's). Our room was clean, as well as the common areas and the bathrooms. The breeze that came through was great and there are wonderful views . It was great meeting and speaking with other guests and the owners. I will return!
Friendly staff, clean, beautiful property, and eco friendly. Stayed in guest room inside the house, well managed, clean facilities. Two kitchens for use. Staff and owners helpful with questions and suggestions of what to do in the area / on the island.
I cannot say enough about staying at these cabanas, and the magic that surrounds them. I've travelled quite a bit throughout the US using hipcamp and air bnb and Mathew's place is worth coming to the big island in of itself. The people were so welcoming, the secluded waterfall was beyond enchanting, and the cabana itself has inspired me to attempt to create something similar back home...although my version will pale in comparison. If you are coming to the big island for any period of time, this is a destination in of itself.
My wife and I had a great time at this charming hostel. Not a party, noisy place but a subdued inviting atmosphere. We stayed in the guesthouse in the room next to the indoor kitchen. They are totally off the grid, solar and water collection. No problem here unless you like to leave your phone plugged in all night long. You probably could but it's bad for your phone battery anyway. Another perk is breakfast a short distance away at Mr Ed's Bakery. Interesting local man that makes great breakfast sandwiches, cookies, turnovers and jams. We only had one small problem with some noisy guests downstairs that the staff took care of after we mentioned it to them. I would give the place 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. Hey it's not the Hyatt but it's a real bargain compared to what they charge. I will be back. Ford B…
What a great place to stay! We were four adults (two couples) staying in the house, which may be a little cramped for some people, but perfect for our style (and budget). The cute little town down the road is walking distance, about 25 minutes, and a beautiful walk indeed. Perfect location for exploring the rainforest of the northeast coast! Glorious sounds of the river in our backyard. The pictures did not do this house justice, everyone’s reaction when we first walked in was a surprise at how much more room there is than the pictures suggest. We requested an extra pillowcase and within minutes there was a knock on the door with a pillow case in hand. Such great service! The two beds upstairs are a bit small, our one friend who is slightly above average height was very uncomfortable, but those of us with average height were fine. Beautiful spot! Mahalo to Mat and the crew, a hui hou!…
